Chapter 1439
Next to her, Wanda Wesley was watching television.
A marine documentary was playing on the TV and Wanda was engrossed in it.
To keep Wanda from wandering off, Layla Lowell dragged a chair to guard the doorway, finally letting herself relax and video chat with her daughter.
She was so engrossed in the chat that it wasn’t until about ten minutes later that she instinctively glanced towards Wanda’s direction.
Good, Wanda was still watching the documentary. Like a child, she was focused and attentive.
In the documentary, an impressive scene unfolded in the azure ocean where a shoal of fish was swarming around a dead whale’s carcass.
Wanda was watching intently, her eyes even held a hint of longing.
Layla Lowell let herself smile, relieved, and continued interacting with her daughter.
Her daughter was now a year and five months old, already able to walk and talk. She was adorable, lively, and intelligent, completely endearing.
Before having a child, Layla was quite resistant to the idea of taking care of children, thinking she had too carefree a personality to do a good job. She worried about not knowing what to do if the child started crying.
But after having her child, she realized those worries were unfounded. The greatest power of a child is the ability to occupy the softest spot in a mother’s heart. Whenever she was tired, she would think of her and her fatigue seemed to disappear.
What she was not too pleased with was the fact that her child resembled the father more, even her personality was similar to that man’s.
As a result, she had not had a moment’s peace from his memories.
She had not stopped her child from meeting her father and the two of them got along quite well.
Sometimes, she would even hear her say things like, "It would be nice if dad could sleep with us. I want him to tell me stories."
Such words she would never utter herself. They must have been taught by someone else.
As for who, it was quite obvious.
Actually, she did consider giving both of them a chance.
It was the day she confirmed her pregnancy, after much thought and deliberation, she decided to find Charles Carrington and even considered marriage.
But that day, she bumped into a woman at the entrance of his law firm.
The woman was beautiful, graceful, and well-mannered. One look and you could tell she was a well-bred lady of high society.
She was polite and greeted Layla of her own accord.
Though they had never met before, she was able to call Layla by her name and introduced herself as Miranda Jones.
The words she said that day still echoed in her ears.
"Miss Lowell, I know I shouldn’t be saying this, but, having been there myself, seeing you reminds me of my own past. Please allow me to say this - I’ve had an abortion for him."
"He said the child was not part of his life plan since it was in the early stages, he urged me to abort it. I was extremely devastated and it had taken me half a year to recover and even three years to put on the calm facade I have today."
"We were high school classmates, having been together since the start of high school. Our relationship lasted for seven years and it was only when we were breaking up that I found out he never really saw me as his only girlfriend. He was a womanizer who never thought about marriage. So I thought it would be a burden to have the child especially with him persistently urging me to abort it."
"Bumping into you today is simply a coincidence. Allow me to share my experience for you to reference. But the decision still lies in your hands."
After hearing what she had to say, Layla hastily retreated, never to pin her hopes on that man again.
But the child was hers, she wanted to keep it.
Looking at the baby on the screen, she was content and knew then that her decision was right.
She lifted her gaze absentmindedly towards the side then returned her gaze to her phone. Suddenly, her gaze shot back.
Wanda Wesley had disappeared!
