Chapter 1419
At the same time, in the Capitol, at the Spence Residence.
It was the birthday of Anders Spence’s father that evening, so a family feast was arranged. Besides the immediate family, they also invited Tristan Collins over.
A year ago, Raine Nolan married into the Spences as an adopted daughter of the Collinses, so the Collins family was regarded as her in-laws.
At this moment, the feast had ended, and Tristan Collins and Mason Spence moved into the Study Room for a chat.
These past two years, the cooperation between both families had grown increasingly close, and the Spences had progressively drifted away from the Fosters, obviously taking sides.
In the past, several major domestic families were led by the Fosters, followed by the Carringtons and Whites, and after them were the Collinses and Spences. However, now, through turn of events resulting from a crisis, the Whites leaped upwards in status through a successful vaccine venture. As their partner, the Collins family also rose in status. Only the Fosters, due to Alexander Foster’s decision to withdraw from the Alliance, became the subject of collective suppression by the Alliance, seeing their status plummet from the top to the fourth place.
Now, in Grearon, the Whites wielded the most power.
In order to form an alliance with Tristan Collins, Mason Spence had chosen to deliberately call off the engagement between Anders Spence and Cherry Foster, and instead welcomed Raine Nolan into the family. Indeed, this move had proven effective.
"Mr. Collins, I heard that Carrington Enterprise is planning to hold a Shareholders’ Meeting tomorrow to select a successor for the President. What’s your take on this matter?"
Tristan Collins responded with a half-hearted smile, "Once Chase Carrington steps down, the Carrington Enterprise will inevitably fall into the hands of side branches. It would be as difficult as ascending to heaven to reclaim it."
"I suppose a change in leadership might be good. A significant reason why Carrington Enterprise has been hesitant to take sides is due to Chase Carrington. If he resigns and lets the younger generation take over, I am confident that we could easily sway Carrington Enterprise to our side."
This was right in line with what Tristan Collins had in mind.
"Clara Carrington, you mean? Let’s select some gifts to congratulate her, once the outcome is revealed tomorrow."
Mason Spence chuckled, "In my opinion, it would be better to organize a meal together sometime. Allow me to make the arrangements."
Tristan Collins nodded slightly in agreement.
In no time, Mason Spence and his wife escorted him to the doorway and saw him off.
Watching the car slowly fade into the distance, the couple was about to turn around to go back inside when they saw a sports car slowly pull up in front of their house.
Two young men got out of the car and greeted them, "Uncle, Aunt."
As they spoke, they swung the back door open and helped a clearly drunk man out of the car.
"Anders, we’re home."
Anders Spence waved his hand dismissively and attempted to climb back into the car, "I’m not coming back, this is not my home!"
Unable to bear the sight of Anders behaving in such a manner, Mason Spence could not hide his frustration, "Is it because of Cherry Foster that you drink all day long? You bring shame upon me!"
Anders Spence did not respond. He just struggled to burrow deeper into the car.
With a frown, Mason Spence instructed, "You two, leave him alone. Drive away now!"
The two young men nodded, quickly pulled Anders Spence out of the car again, closed the car door and sped off.
Anders Spence collapsed on the ground, motionless, panting slightly.
His mother hurried over to check on him, but Mason Spence barred her way.
"Leave him be! If he doesn’t want to come back, then he shouldn’t return! Let him fend for himself!"
Having said this, he took his wife’s hand and headed back inside.
His mother looked back worryingly, seemed to recall something and quickly walked towards the second floor.
The second floor was where Raine Nolan and her husband’s room was.
She knocked on the door and walked in without waiting for an answer.
She happened to see Raine Nolan holding a glass of water, her hand suddenly jolted from the glass.
It seemed as though Raine was startled.
"What are you doing?" Mrs. Spence asked, puzzled.
Raine Nolan’s smile stiffened. The hand she’d hidden behind her back gripped a piece of square white paper, from which a finely ground white powder dropped.
"Nothing really, Mom. I just wanted to get a drink of water."
