Chapter 1384
The room was extraordinarily quiet, cleared of people.
Chloe Collins raised her hand, revealing a red rope bracelet.
"Give me an explanation."
Milton White’s eyes showed a hint of surprise. His gaze lowered slowly, followed by a chuckle, "What exactly do you want to ask?"
He stepped back, appearing serene and calm.
"I found this on Mane York."
Her gaze was sharp.
Milton White chuckled softly, "What, do you suspect I did something to her?"
He took the bracelet and examined it, remarking, "Yes, indeed it’s the one you gave me, which disappeared a while ago."
He spoke leisurely, his words seemingly flawless.
Chloe had no solid evidence implicating him.
But she knew Milton; the more calm he appeared, the more likely it was that he was involved in this.
He put the bracelet on. The red mark on his wrist was still fresh and glaring.
"Did you come over? Does Alexander Foster know about this?" he asked casually.
"The police said the blade flew out suddenly and pierced into Mane York. If I recall correctly, your blade skills have always been excellent."
Milton looked up, his eyes harboring an unreadable meaning.
Suddenly, he asked, "What if I did it? What will you do?"
His smile was still in place. It was like the old times.
It felt like we were discussing something warm and touching, not a violent case.
Chloe stared at him; she already had an answer in her heart.
"Why?" She was confused and heartbroken.
Milton White gazed at her intensely, wordless for a long while.
After a long time, he pulled back his distant gaze, as if he had made a significant decision. Abruptly, he stood up and said, "Follow me."
He walked into the sunset light coming through the French windows. Against the light, the white knit sweater and trousers he wore cast a faint halo, making him look angelic.
Chloe followed him like she did when she was a child, walking slowly behind him, without any guard.
Because she knew, he wouldn’t hurt her.
We took an elevator down to the second floor basement, an even more private and quiet place. Thanks to the skylight, it wasn’t dark and oppressive.
Milton White began playing some soft music and the romantic melody filled every corner of the floor.
We entered an exhibition room. Milton pressed many buttons with a smooth, precise motion.
Immediately, Chloe saw the scrolls on the walls rolled up, revealing hidden pictures in the secret compartments.
She was taken aback.
All those photos were of her.
In the projection in the middle, photos of her from past to present flashed one by one, like a chronicle of her growth.
Some captured moments she had nearly forgotten.
In one of the pictures, a little girl in a camouflage uniform, hiding behind a hay bale, a homemade slingshot in her hand. The pair of eyes under her helmet spoke of a sharp intensity.
Milton paused the display. Looking into the distance, with a smile he said, "You remember this, right? The Devil’s training base."
Chloe was taken aback, "Those two people in the photo, are you and... "
"Alex." He answered.
He walked over and caressed the face of her ten-year-old self on the screen, slowly saying, "In fact, I recognized you the moment I saw you then. I saw how happy you were, so I didn’t bust you. I wanted to see what tricks you would come up with. You did not disappoint me. I thought to myself, this young lady is not simple. She is quite interesting."
He turned around, his gaze brimming with deep affection as he looked at her.
Chloe understood the emotions in his eyes, but she didn’t know what to say.
Milton White recounted the past as if he was telling someone else’s story, "The Alliance had high hopes for me and Alex, so they threw us into this training camp to sharpen our skills. Life was dull there, but I never expected you to barge in."
