Chapter 1227

A whiff of a burnt smell pricked Chloe Collins’s nostrils, prompting her to accelerate her footsteps.

The deeper she ventured, the quieter it became, until she walked into a main hall illuminated by bright lights.

The setup here looked ordinary at first glance. However, careful observation would reveal the lack of windows and the reliance on artificial light to illuminate the room.

The kitchen’s exhaust system was excellent. Even without windows, there was no worrying about smoke filling the space.

At this point, Chloe could smell burnt food, recognizable as chicken breast and a fried egg.

Walking in, she spotted a slender boy standing in front of a stove, stubbornly flipping over the blackened food with a spatula.

He was tall and skinny, about 6 feet tall, and slim. His skin was softer than a girl’s – too soft, and pale from avoiding the sun, radiant and smooth. He had rather long hair by boy’s standards, the soft strands sometimes covering his eyes as he leaned down.

In Chloe’s mind, he was the embodiment of quiet isolation, preferring solitude to company. He couldn’t even cook, finding it too complicated. Normally, someone would deliver his meals to him and leave quickly after knocking on the door as a cue.

So, the crackling noise from the pan frying the food seemed extraordinarily loud, at odds with his demeanour.

"Let me do it," she said.

The boy quickly turned his head towards the sound, with a pair of eyes more beautiful than a girl’s lighting up with a gentle surprise. His eyes were a rare shade of red, as if wearing coloured contact lenses, which contrasted beautifully with his real, handsome appearance.

"You, you’re back," he said.

Chloe took the spatula from him, turned off the stove, discarded the burnt food and asked, "Fancy a sandwich?"

The boy pursed his lips, "I, was trying to cook something, for you."

Though his hands were particularly attractive, he was now anxiously twisting his fingers together.

Chloe knew his old habit of getting agitated was kicking in.

She chuckled, her eyes gentle, and patted his head, "Haven’t had my cooking in a while, right? This time I picked up some new recipes. My kitchen skills have improved. Let me show you."

The young man blinked his pure eyes, which were very pretty. His whole body seemed to relax under Chloe’s touch and his hands slowly fell to his sides.

He watched Chloe’s skillful chopping and asked, "Who did you learn it from?"

"That elder brother outside, his cooking is delicious," Chloe glanced back at him and laughed, her smile tender, "and he is a good person."

The young man fell silent.

He closely watched Chloe’s every move while she prepared the food, staying close by her side even without speaking a word.

He anticipated Chloe’s needs, handing her the ingredients before she needed them.

Despite his clinginess, Chloe showed no signs of irritation, patiently indulging the young man.

She prepared two simple dishes, served in no time.

The boy ate quietly and attentively.

He looked up at Chloe, the corner of his mouth smeared with tomato sauce, his bright eyes looking at her adorably, "You should eat too."

Chloe leaned on her hand, watching him, her smile soft. She instinctively reached out and wiped the oil stain from the corner of his mouth, saying, "The elder brother outside hasn’t eaten yet, I need to bring him some food."

The young man looked down, silent.

Chloe noticed his hand trembling slightly as he held onto his fork.

Her smile faded abruptly.

"Dean Collins, don’t scare me," she said.

The boy was 18 and had been diagnosed with severe autism. His name was Dean Collins.

Several years ago, she had rescued him from a life of hell and given him this name.
