His Mafia Prince -
Chapter 64: Talk Him Down
Chapter 64: Talk Him Down
(SASHA)
Later in the week, Miles came back to me with some information he managed to dig up about Tyler. I’m anxious as I wait to hear what he found out. Ever since we came from the doctor’s appointment, I barely see Tyler. He goes to bed before me every night and always wakes up before me. I’m sure that he is avoiding me.
Miles glances at his side notes. "Tyler hasn’t had any serious relationships. He’s been a loner for most of his life.
I cross my arms over my chest. "He obviously saw someone though, he is pregnant."
Miles grimaces. "Yes. I asked a few people around the camp he lived in when we approached him with the marriage idea. None of them knows a thing about him having a boyfriend."
"Perhaps he did before he lived there."
"Maybe."
"You found him first though when you were sourcing for my omega candidates. Where did you first meet him?"
"At a rundown motel."
"And why did you pick him?" I ask. Sometimes I feel so impatient with Tyler. He gets under my skin like no one ever has. He’s impossible to ignore and annoying as hell.
Miles smiles at me. "He was pretty. I knew you’d like him. What impressed me more was how he held down the drunk asshole alphas. I saw the baby bump. It was then that I noticed he was desperate as fuck. That’s what would make him so willing to take on the offer."
"Barely. Remember I had to threaten him to make him get in line."
"It’s that stubbornness that makes you like him. Don’t act like it isn’t that. You rejected the overly willing omegas I brought to you."
"They were so... vanilla," I mumble.
"The redhead was a freak though."
"You went to enjoy my leftovers?" I laugh.
"Mmh...I did." He sighs. "Even red was boring when we weren’t fucking."
I laugh gruffly and my thoughts return to Tyler. "I want to know what Tyler is hiding."
Miles gazes at me and then taps a pen on his thigh. "I’ve never seen you like this."
"Like what?"
"This interested. He’s really gotten under your skin this one."
"Has he? What if he has anyway?"
"Don’t shoot me," Miles laughs. "it’s a good thing though...I think. There’s no crime in falling in love."
"Love?" I scowl. "Who mentioned anything about falling in love?"
He shrugs. "You care about him. That much is obvious."
"Whatever," I avoid his gaze. "Just tell me what you found out. I don’t have all day to waste on Tyler." I have to admit that I’m embarrassed that even Miles can see I’m this obsessed with Tyler. But it makes sense because Miles has been with me long enough to be able to read me. Even then, the idea of caring this much about anyone who isn’t family appals me.
"There was one lady at the camp though who was quite chatty. She lived close to Tyler’s tent. She told me that Tyler had spent some time in the hospital before coming to live with them in that camp."
"Why? Was he sick?" I frown.
"I’m not sure. Her details were vague. She said Tyler didn’t talk about himself much."
I shrug. "Ain’t that the truth."
"I’ll try talking to ERs in the area, see if they know anything or if they remember him. I didn’t have time for that today, but I definitely will tomorrow."
"Sure," I say, leaning back into my chair. "Have you found any connection to Angelo yet? I feel there is something between them."
"Not yet."
I suck my teeth. "I’d like to know why Tyler seems so scared of him."
"He’s probably scared because he knows Angelo was a threat to your marriage legitimacy."
"I don’t think so. There’s something more to it." I mumble. "There’s something about him that irks Tyler. He had a major meltdown the other day"
"What? Why?"
"Yes, he did. Dr Nicholas just told him to wait a few weeks more until he could get his anaemia under control and he snapped. He even thought I bribed the doctor to stop him from getting the abortion."
"Seriously?"
"Like a heart attack, yes."
His gaze narrows. "Why would he think that though?"
"he’s probably just paranoid."
"Maybe you should ask him about his childhood."
I laugh. "Tyler? You have no idea who you sprung to me. He doesn’t talk about stuff like that."
I know for a fact that Tyler is a very guarded person. He shuts out everyone who attempts to get close to him. Perhaps it makes him feel good, or maybe he just does that to keep people at bay. He’s lived like that for so long that I doubt I can get him out of his shell if I tried it. He has his walls so high that even I can’t get through to him. I have tried to no avail. He won’t let me.
"He might, who knows?"
"I don’t think so, Miles. Tyler is like a vault with me. I wouldn’t have you snooping around if I knew he could talk to me. I can’t get him to tell me anything. If he could open up to me, maybe I could understand him better."
Much as I’m dying with the curiosity to find out what he is hiding from me, I can’t push him too hard because he might eventually fold. I don’t want to add to his pain. I’m only hoping that he has a change of heart and lets me in on his thoughts. I’m only hoping he realizes the change he is making in my life. I don’t want to be with anybody else. I don’t want to have to pressure him, but it’s really hard to manage my nosiness when I know that he is truly hiding something from me.
"God, you really are a different person, Sasha."
Heat rushes to my face. "What?"
"You really want to understand Tyler." He snickers. "You never give a puck about anyone’s past or present."
"I don’t think so. I’m very devoted to my family."
"no. I mean anyone who isn’t related to you by blood. Apart from me, who else do you let close?" he smirks. "I mean, I charmed my way in. But you don’t open up just as much as Tyler."
"That’s because I have to be careful of my position," I say.
"Yeah, well, I bet Tyler had to be careful because of his too." He gets up. "He’s scared. That much is obvious."
"I know, but we need to find out what’s got him so spooked."
"Once you find out what’s bothering him, you two lovebirds can live happily ever after?" he mocks.
I shrug. "What are the odds?" I school my face to make sure I hide that spark of excitement I get at the idea. Never once have I believed in that happily ever after bullshit. Yet when I picture Tyler, I see the possibility of that for us.
I need him to trust me. I have to figure out why he can’t trust me. If he can’t trust me, our relationship could end. I don’t want that. Hell, I can’t even stand the thought.
