His Mafia Prince -
Chapter 154: To Getting A Nanny
Chapter 154: To Getting A Nanny
(ARLO)
(One and a Half Months Later...)
Juggling being a new father and running a syndicate hasn’t been easy. I had no idea how much more exhausting it would be to do the two. Reign doesn’t sleep a lot through the night, which means that I barely sleep too. Miles takes three nights a week with the baby, and I take four. I don’t get enough rest.
Sasha also gave me the ports. That has added so much pressure on me. Running the ports isn’t as easy as it sounds. Thankfully, I have Miles by my side to help me. Millions of dollars now flow in my operation in form of alcohol, smuggling firearms and tobacco. It is stressful as hell, and on most days, I feel like I am sleepwalking.
One evening, Miles and zi are about to have dinner. I have Reign rocking on a swing beside the table. He is snoozing away. Miles pours us wine and I light two candles on the table.
"I didn’t have the energy to cook, so I ordered lasagna from the restaurant. I hope you don’t mind." I say as I blow out a match. "I got it from the new restaurant near the mall."
"It is food, that is all that matters." Miles sips his wine and nods his approval.
I groan as I sit. My back feels like that if an eighty-year-old. "Did you know Sasha yelled at me today?" I scoot my chair closer to the table.
"Excuse me?" Miles bristles instantly. "Why?" his eyes flash with anger.
"Because someone from Terra Nova accused me of trafficking people. Lies have spread all over the town, I’m even surprised that you haven’t heard. You know that syndicate has always hated the Sovereign Ring Syndicate. They had many run-ins with my father over the years." I scowl. "Of all the disgusting things to ever exist, that is the last thing that I would do." I’m not exactly an upstanding citizen, but I don’t think that I would ever smuggle people.
Miles narrows his gaze. "Sid Sasha believed the lies? He believed that my omega would be involved in such heinous acts?"
"Well, he was pretty angry over the phone―"
"You mean he actually yelled at you?" he growls and stands up then tugs his phone out of his pocket. "Well, we will see about that. I don’t appreciate him yelling at my omega. How dare he?"
I let out a nervous laugh. "It’s okay, Miles. I told him that it was a lie and he came down. He believed me."
"Did he?" Miles scowls.
"He seemed to." I smile weakly. "He even said he was sorry for yelling at me. That’s why I thought that maybe he’d have let you know. Sasha doesn’t look like one to apologise to anyone. I bet it was a traumatic experience for him."
Miles slowly tucks his phone away, gaze pinned on me. "No, he didn’t tell me anything. He really apologised?"
"Yes. He did. Twice even." I grin. "To be honest, I heard Tyler in the background. I think he was trying to show him what a great man he is. Maybe if Tyler weren’t around had have just hung up on me.
Miles laughs gruffly. "That’s probably true. I know Sasha with horrible phone manners."
"Anyway, it was all over soon. You know, one of these days, I’d love to get my hands on one of the Terranova Syndicate men and give them a piece of my mind."
"The whole Terranova clan is a scam. If there’s anyone involved in shady business, I’m sure it is that group." Miles mumbles.
"Let’s try and enjoy our meal and not think about them." I say, serving him a big portion of the lasagna. I set a piece of garlic toast on the side too and he rubs his hands gleefully. I watch him and my heart aches. I find him so sweet these days that I find it so hard to believe that there was a time when I didn’t love him.
Miles notices when I serve myself a smaller portion. "You need to eat more. You’re the only omega that I know whip grew thinner than he was before getting pregnant. Tyler is always complaining of gaining extra pounds."
"Tyler has two kids. I just had one." I take a bite of my food while avoiding his gaze.
"You’re so thin."
"And you worry a lot."
Miles watches me silent without touching his food.
"Why aren’t you eating?" I ask, glancing up.
"You chose a live-in nanny? I gave you six candidates last week."
"I will," I swallow the food with a little difficulty. The idea of a nanny always makes me tense. I have always wanted one, but the thought of just handing my baby to a stranger doesn’t sit right with me.
"Arlo," Miles calls, "You can’t keep on the way it is. You don’t sleep well and you are ruining yourself ragged with work and the baby. Do you need me to take some more nights with the baby?"
"No." I sigh. "If you do that then you’ll be dragging all the time."
"Well then, something has to change." His brows knit close together. He looks worried. "I overheard Sasha arguing with Jericho today. He wants him to involve himself more with the family business. How about him helping you with the ports? What do you think about it? Jericho is bright. He will take some of the strain off you."
"Sasha wanted me to train Arlo on a few things. I’m okay with him helping me with the ports. I wouldn’t mind working with him. I like Jericho."
"I know." Miles narrows his eyes.
"As a friend." I laugh. "That’s what I meant. You know I love you."
"How could you not?" he smirks. "I am an amazing alpha."
I force myself to take another bite just to please Miles. "I’ve narrowed the number of nanny candidates to two."
"Have you?" he smiles looking pleased. "Well, I’m glad to hear that."
I eat some more then set down my fork. "You won’t think of me as some failure omega, right?"
He squints. "In what way?"
"If I need help," I hold his haze and my face grows warm. "An omega is supposed to take care of their offspring."
"That’s backward thinking, Arlo. Some omegas prefer working these days. Am omegas can be anything they want to be. At least, my omega is allowed to be."
I’m so delighted to contain it so I find myself smiling. "You’re more enlightened than I expected."
Miles beams under my praise. "I am now, aren’t I?"
The smile on my face fades. "I worry though that you’ll think I’m failing at my duties. Tyler is handling two babies quite well without a nanny."
"Tyler has Lucia helping him, plus he doesn’t have a syndicate to run. Have you forgotten that Lucia has a live-in babysitter with her?"
"I guess that’s true." I shrug.
"Trust me, Tyler also makes Sasha pitch in too. Sasha tried to get out of changing poopy diapers and Tyler wouldn’t have it." He grins. "You know sometimes, it is fun to watch Tyler boss Sasha around. Besides Lucia, he is the only one who can get Sasha to do things that he hates doing."
"Sasha seems to live in fear of disappointing Tyler." I mumble.
"A good alpha worries whether or not his omega is pleased." He says, leaning closer to me. The candles reflect in his honey eyes. "If our omega is unhappy, it means we failed at our job."
"You always make me happy, Miles."
"Well," he shrugs. "I try." He goes back to eating.
I watch him as he eats. I feel truly lucky. He is right that I need help with the baby. I need to have energy to focus on my alpha too. At the moment, I feel drained by the end of the day. I need to stop being so prideful about the nanny thing and give it a try.
"Do you want to know the two nannies that I’ve narrowed it down to?"
"Yeah, of course." He perks up.
"Alright." I take a sip of wine then continue. "They both have great references, but one is more experienced than the other. One is a male omega just about my age, he has been working as a Manny for five years. He is young, so I’m guessing that he has lots of energy. The other one is an older female omega. She has twenty years of experience. She has worked for many families."
"So, are you leaning on one more than the other?"
Logic tells me that I should pick the older female because she has lots of experience, but for some reason, I want to go for the younger one. I want to give him a chance."
"Then go with him. I think you should go with your gut." Miles says. "You should give the kid a chance, right?"
"Yeah, you think I should pick him?"
"Yes. All that matters is that you get someone who you trust here to help you take care of Reign. It would be nice to have moderate nights with you, but nowadays you fall asleep before 8:00 pm."
"I know." I wince. "Alright. I’ll call Wesley tomorrow morning for an interview here. I will see first hand how he is going to handle the baby."
"Alright then. Sounds like a plan." He holds up his wine glass. "Let’s toast to getting a nanny." I want to spend more time with you, Arlo."
We clink our glasses and I take a sip then set my glass down. I get up and move around the table. I straddle Miles’ lap and he smiles at me. I rest my hands on my hips and press a soft kiss on his mouth. "How lucky was I to get to meet you, Miles?"
"I don’t remember it as exactly luck. It all started when you went on a murderous hunt to get revenge against Sasha."
"Oh yeah?" I say as I begin to undo the buttons of his shirt. "Well, all that is in the past now."
He chuckles and next thing I know is his hands are beneath my shirt. "I forgive all that."
My fingers trace the burn scars on his neck. It reminds me of all the horror that Miles went through as a child. By all rights, I would understand if Miles became one bitter unlovable person. But he is not. He looks intimidating as hell, but he’s the gentlest, most caring person that I have ever known.
"You’re my alpha." I say as I cup his face.
"I know."
"And you’re my husband."
"I know that too." His lips curve into a wry smile.
"I would die without you. You know that, right?" I say softly. "Do you know I wouldn’t want to breathe a second longer if something happened to you?"
The smile on his face disappears and his palms ground my hips. "I feel exactly the same, Arlo. I will follow you wherever you go. In this life or the next, I will always be with you." He gets up and lifts me suddenly like I weigh nothing. "Baby Reign is asleep. It’s time for dessert."
"Yeah?"
"Mmh..." he rumbles as lust begins to glisten in his eyes.
"Sounds good to me." I slip my hands around his neck, press a kiss on his jaw and whisper in his ear. "My darling Neanderthal."
