Chapter 150: Your Wish, My Command

(ARLO)

I take a deep breath and collect my thoughts. "Well...I’ve been okay. Just the usual I guess, nausea, tiredness. They’re all manageable though. It’s just that I’ve been a little anxious lately. I just wanted to make sure that everything is going on alright with the baby."

Dr Nicholas nods with a sympathetic expression on his face. "I’m glad you came. You should have come in sooner, but it’s still alright that you came in now. At this stage, it is perfectly normal if you feel a little anxious. Let’s take a look and see how the little one is doing. Is that alright with you?" he says, motioning for me to lie on the examination table. He helps me to get comfortable before he begins the ultrasound process.

Since we entered this room, Miles hasn’t said a word. Instead, he is watching us with a serious expression. The doctor greeted us both. I guess that Miles is just in one of his quiet moods. He merely acknowledged his arrival with a grunt.

The doctor rolls the cart with the ultrasound machine closer to the table where I’m lying. He powers the machine on. It is so quiet here that the only sound we can hear is the faint hum of the machine. He then squirts some cool liquid on my belly. I suck in a deep breath and look on the screen, searching for the glimpse of the life inside me in the muddy picture. It is all just a flurry of flickering mess to my untrained eyes. I can’t see a baby.

"So, what are we looking at?" Miles finally asks, breaking his silence.

The doctor points at some small shape on the screen. "Right there, that’s the baby."

"Is it?" I squint my eyes. "It is difficult to see."

"Yes, I know." The doctor says. "Let me try and zoom in. The fetus is tiny now." He says while zooming in. The rhythmic sound of a beating heart fills the room.

"That’s the baby’s heartbeat?" Miles asks.

"Yes it is." The doctor says. "It is strong and healthy. That’s what we are looking for at this stage."

I glance over at Miles. His cheeks are flushed rosy and he looks prideful as he stares at the screen. He smiles at me and I smile back. "It’s real." He says quietly.

"It is." I reach out my hand and he holds it. "Maybe we just can’t see it yet, but we can hear the heartbeat. There is indeed a baby in there."

"Yes. You indeed have a baby inside of you." The doctor confirms with a smile on his face. He wipes the gel off my stomach and helps me to sit up straight. "Do you have any questions about what to expect in the comic g weeks? Anything that you are curious about?"

"Is it normal that I already feel tired?" I cup my little baby bump. "It’s only been three months. Jo come I’m already this tired when the baby is too small to even see?"

Dr Nicholas nods sympathetically. "Well, the baby is still small, but you are making a life inside of you. The body is doing a lot in preparation for that. Your progesterone levels have increased much at this time. High progesterone levels are crucial to maintain the pregnancy. But then the side effect is that you tend to feel tired and sleepy most of the time. Then again it has a natural sedative that causes the excess fatigue."

"Oh," I frown. "I didn’t know that."

"Well, there is a lot more going on now." He explains. There are metabolic changes in your body as well. Your blood volume has definitely increased to help nourish you and your growing baby. That can put additional strain to your heart. That could also cause fatigue. Tell me, how are you sleeping?"

"He is not sleeping very well," Miles says. "I rub his back sometimes to help him sleep better. But he is so anxious. I am hoping that this appointment will help him calm down a little."

Dr Nicholas smiles at Miles. "You’re so nice for doing that for him." he turns his attention to me. "You don’t need to be anxious, Arlo. Everything seems normal as it is. We will take some blood today just to keep an eye on other things that we might have overlooked. But so far, the pregnancy is progressing beautifully."

I’m relieved when the doctor says that everything is going on just right. Having their professional check up and opinion calms me a little. "You were right, I should have probably come in sooner. I wouldn’t have been half as stressed as I was."

"But I did try to convince you to come in. You refused. You can be very stubborn sometimes, Arlo."

I grimace. "I don’t know...I was just afraid. I don’t know what I was afraid of though."

"Anxiety is very common, especially if it is your first pregnancy. Many omegas are balls of anxiety for the first time. That doesn’t mean that they don’t worry about the other pregnancies to come. There’s just some serious anxiety that comes with the first one. I think it is probably because it is all new. You can never know what to expect until you have been at it once or twice. Then, nothing surprises you anymore."

We chat for a little longer as Dr Nicholas draws blood. He guarantees that we will have the results of the blood tests in a few days. Miles and I leave the office. He holds my hand as we walk towards the SUV. It is a beautiful sunny afternoon, and I feel more optimistic about this pregnancy than I have ever been.

"You wanna grab lunch?" he asks.

I snicker. "Do you ever expect a no answer from me when you ask about food?"

He laughs gruffly. "I was just asking to confirm." He says while opening the door for me. "What do you want to eat? Maybe we can go to that noodle place you like? Coco’s Place?"

"I crave it constantly. Do you think it is wrong for me to be Italian but crave Asian food so much?" U laugh as I clip my seatbelt in place. "I can’t help the cravings. I don’t think anything else can satisfy me like the noodles do."

"Nothing else?" he arches a brow.

I know what he means by that, and I can’t help but laugh at the absurdity. "Come on. I mean food wise. Of course you satisfy me in other ways. If I would pick between noodles and having sex with you forever, then I would pick sex."

He laughs. "You flatter me, love. I feel so special now. I know how much you love your noodles." He kisses me on the forehead then closes my door and goes round the car. Once he is settled behind the wheel, he says, "You have to eat the most nutritious food. That’s the most important thing right now. It doesn’t matter the country it comes from."

"Well then, in that case, take me to my noodles." I say gleefully.

"Of course, love." A smile curves at the corner of his lips. "As you wish."
