Chapter 133: Oh, He Will Suffer

Chapter 133: Oh, He Will Suffer

(MILES)

When we get to Gaffney’s Memorial Hospital, I hurry out of the SUV and carefully get Arlo out of the car. I’m not patient enough to wait for the driver to go inside to get somebody to help him. That will take forever and I am chomping at the bit as it is. Sasha helping me to carry Arlo to the ER catches me off guard. I’d like to think that he changed his attitude towards Arlo, but I know that at this point, he is just trying to score some brownie points with me.

Or maybe he is just worried that I’ll let Tyler know how callous he was with Arlo.

Whatever his reason for helping me, I’m glad that he does because the nurses inside know him. In a few minutes, they have already scrambled and found a doctor. The doctor is an older alpha with red hair. He takes his time to observe Arlo’s stomach keenly.

"He got into a car accident," I say.

"Yeah, I have been informed so." The doctor sits up, looking grim. "I suspect that something ruptured inside of him. We need to find that out. We will need to operate."

"Will he be okay?" I ask, concerned. His diagnosis doesn’t come as much of a surprise though.

The doctor grimaces at my question. "that’s hard to say, we can’t tell what we are dealing with yet, we can only be sure if we open him up."

"He has to be okay." Sasha steps forward.

"He... he will be. I’ll operate on him myself and make sure that he is well taken care of." The doctor says, glancing at Sasha uneasily.

"That’s all I ask." He says, tugging a smile that doesn’t reach his eyes.

After being the jerk he was earlier, I’m actually glad to see Sasha put in the effort he is putting in. He is pressuring the doctor to make sure that Arlo is okay. Then again I worry that no matter how much he bullies the hospital staff into doing a good job, if whatever got damaged inside Arlo’s body is irreparable, then no amount of threats in the world could ever save him.

I watch them wheel Arlo away and the sight sickens me to my core. I begin to follow them but Sasha yanks my arm and leads out to the waiting room. I obey and sit on the vinyl chair a few steps away that Sasha points to. He sits beside me. He looks out of place with the expensive suit has on. The waiting room is as crowded as it can get and I have a feeling that Sasha wishes he could escape the stares and whispers coming his way. He however keeps himself busy, tapping on his cell.

I’m certain that he is texting Tyler. He confirms my suspicions when he turns and asks me, "So, how are you holding up? This must be hard on you." The question is so unlike Sasha that I’m forced to stifle a laugh. I know those words must have come straight from Tyler. Sasha wouldn’t be that worried about me to the point of inquiring about my mental state.

"This is brutal," I say quietly.

"I know." He hesitates. "Do you love him?"

Heat rushes to my face, and I avoid gazing at him directly. "I don’t know. I’ve never been here before. Maybe this is how it feels to love someone."

"I bet not." He says, tucking his phone away. "My mother must have been tight when she said you and Arlo are fated mates. The way you carry yourself around him is different so unlike you."

I’m not sure of the answer to give him.

He sighs, leaning back into his chair and clasping his fingers on his torso. "That is exactly what happened between me and Tyler. I had this intense drive to be with him, which made no sense. It was almost like he consumed me. I just couldn’t downplay the instincts."

"I know." I nod. "I didn’t want to want him this badly."

"Yes, but that’s the thing. You can’t help it." He says lowly. "I’m sure he feels just the same way you do. This might sound strange coming from me, but after seeing you two together today, I think you belong to each other. He is yours."

He is yours.

Sasha’s words spark some sort of excitement in me. I’m not sure what he means by that statement. All I know is that it is exciting to think of Arlo as mine. That he is my fated mate. That I was destined to be with him. It is satisfying enough that other people are beginning to notice this connection between me and him. That very idea thrills me, but when it crosses my mind that he might die on the operation table, the excitement fades and overwhelming anxiety takes course.

Sasha grimaces at my expression. "That doctor wouldn’t dare let him die."

"He might do everything he has in his power to save him, but he isn’t God."

"Right.?’ Sasha gives me an awkward pat on the back. "Aral is a fighter. He will sure pull through."

"I hope he will."

"Tyler wanted to come, just so you know. He wanted to show his support." He sighs. "I told him to stay home because of his pregnancy. I don’t want him exposing himself to all the infections around this place."

"That was sure the right call to make. You don’t want him exposing himself and the unborn child at risk."

"Yeah. The early stages of pregnancy can be overwhelming." Sasha bites his lip, looking muddled. Do you know whether Arlo is pregnant yet?"

I shake my head. "No." It didn’t cross my mind the entire time. I was only concerned about Arlo at the moment. "He might lose the child if he is pregnant."

Sasha grimaces. "Maybe."

I groan and lean forward to rest my head on my palms. "I should have been more alert. I was distracted and failed to pay attention. Why didn’t I pay attention?" I look at him imploringly. "I knew that fucker Dalton would come after him. Why wasn’t I attentive?"

"It’s alright, Miles. Arlo will be okay."

"No. It’s not okay." I mumble. I hear perky female sounds over the speaker making announcements. Sitting here waiting for Arlo to live or die is draining the life out of me by the second. "Do you know where we were before the accident?"

Sasha shakes his head.

"We went cake shopping."

He tenses. "Oh."

"Now that wedding might never happen because I wasn’t careful enough to keep my guard up, and now my omega might die."

"Miles!" Sasha squeezes my arm. "Don’t taunt yourself like this."

"Why not? That’s the truth. I was supposed to protect him but I failed. I failed at my job to protect my omega. I’m not a good alpha." I turn and face him. "That sucker Dalton needs to pay tenfold for doing this. Why is it taking forever to find him?"

"Turns out he is more slippery than we expected. But my men are out looking for him as we speak. We will find him. Someone’s gonna talk eventually. Someone will turn on him. I will not let him out of my radar. He should have just stayed in hiding. His revenge vendetta will now cost him his life."

"Promise me that we will make him suffer when you finally catch him. I want him to suffer horribly." I will Sasha. I’m really hoping that he takes note of how frustrating this is for me. I never saw myself being in such a position once. It’s so taunting and heartbreaking. I wouldn’t wish this kind of agony on anyone.

Sasha smiles coldly. "Oh, trust me, Miles, he will suffer. He will curse the day he was born into the earth."
