Chapter 131: Save Yourself

Chapter 131: Save Yourself

(MILES)

I’m lucky to have seen the SUV before impact. I didn’t have enough time to swerve the vehicle, but I have enough time to press the gas hard. It is by that that I manage to save us from being T boned. It smashes on the rear right side of our car, causing our car to spin wildly and settle at the intersection.

Panic slithers through me because it is Arlo’s side of the car that took the impact. Thank God he had his seatbelt on. The airbag deployed too. But since the SUV slammed into us, he hasn’t made a sound. I pray that he is alright.

I bang my head on the side of the car on impact. Lucky for us, the airbag deployed instantly with a sound similar to that of a gunshot. It blurs my vision for a minute as it opens. An acrid scent, similar to that of fireworks fills the air. The sounds of metal crunching on metal and breaking glass fill my ears.

The car comes to a stop and the sound of the radiator hissing and people screaming begin to intensify. Arlo lets out a groan, which reassures me that he is alive. It floods me with some sort of relief.

We have to get out of our car now. I have no idea why the other SUV hit us. It seems more like they rammed into us on purpose. It is unlikely that this is an accident. I suspect that because of the speed at which the other vehicle approached us

Still dazed, I force myself to undo the seatbelt and yank my our open. I slide out of the car and fall on my knees. The corners of my vision are still blurred when I pull out my gun. The taste of blood in my mouth tells me that I bit my tongue on impact. I drag myself around the car, moving to the front. Since we were hit at the back, circling to the front seems wiser. I need to get Arlo out of the car before someone gets to him first. I hear sirens in the distance. I catch sight of Aral stumbling out of the car too.

When I see another burly guy climb out of the SUV, adrenaline jolts through me. He has blood on his face and is moving towards Arlo’s direction. I see him draw a weapon from its holster and grit my teeth.

"Shit" I muted under my breath as I lift my gun and aim two rounds at the guy’s burly chest. He drops to the ground like a sack of maize. I didn’t have a lot of time to aim and my vision was shit too. Unfortunately for him, his big chest disadvantaged him. I ignore the screams of the people gathering and crawl towards Arlo.

He flinched when I fired my gun, but now he is just staring at me wildly. I catch a glimpse of a blood streak flowing down his face. I squint at the car and notice that there is no one else. It can’t be, because the guy that I shot came from the passenger side. Did the other guy take off or he is hovering somewhere around here? He could be aiming at my head now for all I know.

I grab Arlo’s arm. "Let’s get out of here. We need to get out of here before the cops arrive."

"Yeah." He nods.

I tug him on me and we head for the sidewalk. The sirens are growing louder by the minute. We need to get out of here asap. The vehicle plates and license won’t lead them back to me. If we get out of here successfully before the cops do then we have nothing to worry about. Sasha has his way around some of the cops, but you never know which one is going to show up.

I lead the way down to the side of some convenience store. I make sure to check behind us every few seconds to make sure that nobody is following us. As soon as I am sure that nobody is following us, I pull out my phone and dial Sasha’s number.

He picks up on the fourth ring. "Miles?"

"Some fucker just tried to kill Arlo," I growl into the phone.

He is silent for a moment. "Where are you now?"

I glance around but see no street signs around us. "I don’t know our exact location. We crashed at the intersection of North Hampshire and Hemingway. We are on foot now going south, probably a mile from there."

"That’s near Sergio’s place."

"Yes, I know that."

"Right, go there. I’m on my way." He hangs up.

I pull my maps up and Google the direction Sasha is suggesting, as soon as I note it, I tuck my phone away. "Come on, this way."

"I’m coming." He drags his get. He is heaving heavily and looks very pale. He is always pale, but right now he looks paler than usual. The blood on his face stands out even more on his white skin.

"We have to move fast," I grumble.

"I...I’m trying. I don’t feel so good, Miles. My stomach hurts." He clutches his stomach and staggers slightly.

Anxiety grips me in a chokehold. It is not a wise move to stop right now, but I have to. We are still close to the crash. He stumbles and almost falls to his face and I rush towards him. "Where did you say hurts? Your stomach?"

"Y...yes." He lets out a harsh breath.

"Alright." I glance about uneasily. "Go ahead, sit on the curb."

He does as I ask and lays down on the slab, holding his stomach and wincing. I kneel on his side and push his shirt up. I see no visible wound, but his stomach looks distended. I grow uneasy and begin to check his abdomen with my fingers. Usually, his stomach is flat and defined, but now it looks bloated and distended.

I press slightly. "Does it hurt?"

"Yes." He winces.

"You might have sustained internal injuries," I mutter.

"Fucking great." He groans, closing his eyes. "Shit...I’m gonna be sick, I think."

I help him over to a nearby bush where he wretches for a few minutes. I’m relieved when he doesn’t puke blood. Once he quiets down, I rub his back gently. "Can you walk?"

He nods, gritting his teeth as I help him up to his feet. We walk for a short distance and I notice openly that he is struggling. He stops at one point and tells me to give him a second.

The paleness of his skin is alarming. All my alpha instincts can’t help the anxiety buzzing through me. I can’t help the need to protect him. It is now gnawing at me mercilessly. I have no clue what I can do to help him. We need to get to the ER fast if he is bleeding internally. There’s nothing that I can do to help him now.

"Arlo," I say softly. "We just need to get to Sergio’s. He has a car. I can use it to take you to the ER."

"I...I know. I just feel dizzy. He leans into me and rests his head against my chest. His breath comes in short, sharp puffs. His slender fingers clutch my shirt. "Just leave me here, Miles. You’re going to get caught because of me."

"What? You’re crazy if you think I’m leaving you here." I loop my arm around his waist. "You’re coming with me. I don’t care if I have to carry you."

"Don’t be a fool. You can come back for me once you get the car."

"You’re the fool. They’ll get you if I just leave you here."

He opens his mouth to say something but I cut him. "Just shut up. Dong say anything about it."

"Dumb Neanderthal." He mumbles. "Why won’t you just leave me and save yourself?"
