Chapter 116: Marriage Of Convenience

Chapter 116: Marriage Of Convenience

(MILES)

"I think it will be much easier to deal with Dalton once we locate him. Arlo is the problem." His brow rises. "Because you are unwilling to let me do what needs to be done."

Guilt nudges at me and I wince.

He sips his drink, looking thoughtful. "Earlier today, Tyler and I were talking about solutions of how to handle Arlo’s problem."

"Were you?" My eyes light up. I’m actually glad to hear that because I know Tyler isn’t always in favour of murders, especially if they can be avoided. He wasn’t born into this lifestyle. He was only forced to be in it. "Did Tyler come up with some suggestions?"

"Well yes, he did." He smiles wryly. "His idea is pretty out there though. He thinks it might be the best way to keep Arlo alive and appease me at the same time. I have a feeling you will hate it."

"Why?" I ask, curiosity getting the best of me.

"Because the plan involves you."

I chuckle nervously. "Okay, in what way?"

"Well, I was telling Tyler earlier that now is the perfect time to make a calculated move. I’m always looking for ways to grow and expand the syndicate, as you well know."

"Yes, but I still don’t understand what that has to do with Arlo or me."

He purses then says softly. "It has everything to do with the two of you. What happened between you and Arlo already set things in motion. Tyler thought it would be smarter to take control of the train instead of jumping off it."

My brow rises. "I’m not following."

He bites his jaw. "Well, think of it from this angle. You already gave Arlo your bite."

"Yes, I’m very much aware of that horrible mistake that I made."

He laughs. "What if we turned that mistake over and used it to our benefit?"

"How?"

"Instead of thinking of it as a mistake, what if we use it to our advantage? What if we see it as an opportunity? What if you embraced the truth that you indeed claimed Arlo?"

"Embrace it?" I ask, feeling uneasy.

"Yes. What if you were to marry him?"

I bug my eyes. "What? Marry him?"

"Yes."

"B...but" I sputter. "Why the hell would I do that?"

"Because the Sovereign ring syndicate is small. Then we could absorb them into the Triple Triad." He smirks. "We could be one big happy family."

I hold his calculating gaze disbelievably. "Arlo would never agree to that. First of all, you killed his father and he hates you so much that I doubt he’d even accept the offer. Second, he will not marry me. He wouldn’t want to."

"Of course." He smiles spitefully. "I know he won’t agree to it. You have to convince him it is for his own good. Unless he wants to die." I shake my head.

"How will I get him to agree? I doubt there’s anything I could tell him to convince him." I shake my head. "And for the record, I don’t want to marry him. I don’t want to marry anyone and I have zero desire to sire a kid right now. I like my freedom too much. I don’t think I’m ready to manoeuvre a marriage just yet."

"It doesn’t have to be a real marriage." Sasha scowls. "You can still fuck around if you want to. It would be a marriage of convenience."

"Well, it sounds decidedly inconvenient for me," I grumble. "Once I marry, I won’t cheat. I take marriage seriously and I’m like you about that. Why do you think I’ve put off that marriage idea for this long? I know once I marry I’ll be stuck with that one omega for the rest of my life."

"It isn’t that bad. It will be amazing in fact. Take an example of me and Tyler," he smiles sappily. "We are as happy as we can be."

"Yes, but your story isn’t the same as mine."

"Don’t be closed-minded, Arlo. Look at the bigger picture." He laughs. "If we really want this to work, we have to take control of the Sovereign Ring syndicate."

"How will that be, if anything, Arlo will still be the boss."

He shakes his head. "Well, yes. But did you forget about the Alpha Incipiency law? You automatically inherited the right to run any business Arlo owns when you claimed him. In this case, the Sovereign Ring syndicate is his business and if you were his husband, you would have the legal right to run it with him. In essence, we’d have control of the business."

I wince. "Of course, I know of the law, but as of today, it is an outdated law. Omegas have just about the same rights as alphas today. I don’t remember the last time I heard an alpha exercising rights under that law."

"Some do. I think you should. The law has never been struck down. That means it still exists. Besides, I’m certain Arlo’s men will prefer an alpha at the helm. Instead of just an omega. I don’t know of many powerful syndicates run by omegas these days."

"But Arlo is the rightful heir of the Sovereign Ring syndicate." I meet Sasha’s shrewd gaze and my stomach churns. "By blood, that’s his inheritance."

"I know it is. But he got himself in this mess. He should appease me somehow."

"I don’t know, but taking his rightful place as heir of the Sovereign Ring syndicate doesn’t sit well with me. That’s too cruel."

Sasha rolls his eyes. "You only say that because he has your bite. Had it been someone else, you’d have been on board with my plan. After all, he will still be running things with you. It won’t be like you pushed him out of his place completely."

"Sasha, I never planned on marrying Arlo. You must know that. Just because I have trouble killing him doesn’t mean I want to marry him. Hell, I don’t want a kid. I don’t want anything that will tie me down."

"it’s high time you thought about marriage, Miles. You are twenty-nine. At your age, an alpha would usually take a mate. The union could bring you wealth and power." His lips purse. "I’m sure you want more power than you have right now."

I frown. "Not really. I’m contented being your second."

"And I sure don’t want to lose you in that position. That’s why I’m suggesting that we absorb Arlo’s syndicate into the Triple triads. Together we’d grow more powerful. The Sovereign Ring syndicate will thrive. After losing the head and Arlo running the show, they are weak right now. They’re even becoming a laughing stock with Arlo’s obsession to kill me. It will be just a matter of time before another syndicate takes over from them. See, that’s what Dalton is trying to do. I say we do it first. Let’s turn a fucked up situation to work to our advantage."

I exhale shakily. Sasha’s persistence has me on edge. "Even if I were willing to marry him, Arlo would be livid at your suggestion. He’s already angry enough. Now what if I suggest that the Triple Triads take over his family syndicate?"

"Too bad." Sasha shrugs. "He has to face the repercussions of his actions. If I’m going to let him live, he’s going to have to pay a huge price for my mercy. For heaven’s sake, Miles, he came against the Triple Triads second and me, the boss. One way or the other he is going to pay for that. If he agrees to this marriage, it will lighten my grudge against him. If I’d had my way, he’d have been dead already. Don’t forget that."
