His Mafia Prince -
Chapter 109: Now or Never
Chapter 109: Now or Never
(MILES)
The cabin backdoor is locked and I’m afraid the SUV is too close for me to slip out without them seeing me. The vehicle approaches closer and I try to not panic. I would have escaped through the windows, but most of them are small and face the road. I grit my teeth and hurry into the bathroom then size up with the window. At least this one is facing the back of the property and a bit bigger than the rest of them.
It is not a big window by any means. It is long and narrow yet I’m tall and built like a tank. I don’t think I can squeeze through the space, because getting stuck right now would be a disaster.
I stride back into the main room and then to the kitchen. There’s no way I’m getting out of this cabin without using the front door I watch as the SUV trails the bumpy road approaching us. My only means of getting out of the cabin unnoticed is in the fact that there is a row of spruce trees that line up in the road. Whoever occupies the car will lose the cabin view for a few minutes when it passes behind them.
The SUV approaches the blind spot. Perspiration breaks out of my face as I watch them. I have to make my timing perfect. That blind spot really is the only hope. It disappears behind the row of trees and I hold my breath then bolt like a bat out of hell towards the back of the cabin. I doubt that Arlo is aware of the approaching car. As soon as I reach the carport, I notice that he isn’t aware. He is kneeling at the foot of the bike, oblivious to the approaching disaster.
"Arlo," I yell.
"What?" he frowns, looking at me.
"Incoming," I yell as I slide to a halt beside him. "The SUV. It’s Dalton’s men."
"What?" he asks, panic coursing through his pretty green eyes.
"We can’t work the bike now. There’s no time. We got to go. Now." I say as I move towards the wall of trees past him."
"So we are leaving the bike here? It’s our only way round the mountains."
"It won’t be of use to us if we are dead."
"B...but" he stammers, looking confused.
I watch the road nervously and move back towards him. "We will come back for it if we can, but right now, we need to run, Arlo. They will see the broken glass at the back of the couch and the food. That way they will learn that somebody was here. They will probably know it was us. We have to get as far away from here as we can."
"Shit." He scowls and cusses harshly.
"We need to go." I grab his arm. "Now."
"I only need a few hours to get the wires attached."
"There’s no time. Let’s go."
"Let me at least try." His eyes shimmer with frustration.
"What happens if the wire isn’t the only problem with the motorcycle, we will be toast. Think, Arlo. Let’s go. We’ll come back for the bike when we can."
Leave him. Just leave him.
Leaving him is the rational thing to do. Especially because is being stubborn. Why am I risking my life trying to convince him to come with me? His survival has nothing to do with mine. I don’t want to wait for him, hell, I shouldn’t have even told him that his lunatic cousin and his men were coming.
Why did I tell him?
I’d be already hiding away if I didn’t come to warn him that his cousin was coming. To get him to come into hiding with me. I slash my odds of surviving every minute I spend here convincing him to come with me.
He yanks the knife off of my hand and kneels at the foot of the bike again.
"What the fuck do you think you are doing?" I yell frustratedly as the sound of tyres screeches upfront. My gaze darts between him and the SUV.
"I’m trying to save us." He yells. His hands tremble so badly that he almost drops the knife. Even so, manages to scrape off some of the plastic covering the wire then attaches the bare wire to another metallic part.
"Damn it." I hiss, torn between staying and leaving him. I don’t understand the reason why I just can’t find it in me to leave him here. I can’t abandon him. My feet feel cemented to the ground as I tower above him. An overwhelming urge to protect him overrides me, even though my instincts are yelling at me to leave.
He gets up once he is satisfied that the wires are attached. "I’m going to try and start it now."
"Lord! Arlo, do you even have the key?" I ask as I glance toward the cabin uneasily.
"I don’t think we need a key. Most dirt bikes don’t need keys to ignite. They have kill switches and kick starters." He straddles the bike as he speaks. "Come on, come on come on...start." he places a foot squarely on the kick pedal.
I see no way the bike will start. I have no faith in it completely. Fear overrides me and I take a step towards the forest. "You’re a fool, Arlo. I’m not going to stay back and die with you."
"Then leave," he yells. As he pushes down the pedal. It doesn’t even squeak. He tries it again a few more times to no avail. He swears a string of cuss words as he tries again and again until the bike starts. The excited look on Arlo’s face grounds me again.
I glance at the cabin once more, and my hopes for our survival diminish. It will only be a matter of seconds before the men come out back. They probably heard the bike rumble. We are fucking toast but I’m still unable to do the noble thing and just leave this fucker.
I watch his tense face as he grabs the handlebars and grits his teeth. My chest aches painfully watching him struggle. I don’t want to die. I don’t want to watch him die. I can’t leave him no matter how stubborn he is.
"come on, come on." He pumps the pedal harder thrice then the bike starts. He tweaks something on the bar and the bike roars loudly.
A gush of dark smoke puffs out of the exhaust pipe and wafts to my face and I wave it off.
The surprise on his face is obvious as he smirks at me. We are probably about to be murdered in cold blood yet this fucker is grinning at me because a damn bike started.
"Come on. Get on" he yells over the rumbling of the motorbike. When I hesitate, he scowls. "Get on the fucking bike, Miles."
"We will be shot at when we ride past them."
"And they will shoot us if we stay." He says impatiently. "You have five seconds to get on or I’ll leave you behind, Miles."
Arlo snaps like a band and I have no reason to doubt that he will leave me behind. I curse climb the bike and wrap my hands on his slim waist. The engine revs again and more smoke puffs behind the bike. It will only be by luck if we ride past Dalton’s guys, or if the bike doesn’t malfunction and drive us off a cliff.
