His Mafia Prince
Chapter 103: I’m Sorry, Princess

Chapter 103: I’m Sorry, Princess

(ARLO)

I watch as Miles wolfs down the disgusting soup then head over to check the fireplace. I saw a huge stack of wood beside the cabin earlier. My fingers and toes feel chilled to the bone. Being out in the cold night air is great, but it would be better with a warm fire.

I straighten. "We should start a fire," I suggest.

"Too risky." Miles pauses with the spoon halfway into his mouth then goes back to eating like the subject has been decided. I hate it when he does that. He seems to think that he has the final say, no matter what is being discussed.

"It would be fine though."

He stops eating and then narrows his eyes. "What if Dalton and his goons see the smoke? We don’t want anything that will attract their attention to us. All we need to do now is to stay alive long enough until we are back in the city."

"Maybe there are other cabins around. Just because they might see smoke come up from a cabin won’t mean it’s us." I mumble.

"What if it catches their attention, Arlo? What then? We have no weapons or guns or anything. Am I to defend myself with a wooden spoon?" he shakes his head in disappointment and finishes his soup. He then sets the pan on the sink and rinses it.

He leans his elbow on the edge of the sink as though he is feeling weak. "it’s too risky."

"Well, I’m fucking freezing." I sigh impatiently.

"There might be some blankets in the bedroom. Check."

"There’s no bedroom. There’s only a kitchen, a bathroom and this room."

"So there’s no bed?" he scowls.

The way he is disappointed makes me laugh. "I’m sorry, Princess. There’s no bed."

"That small cot just about did my back in." He says, twisting his spine as he straightens into his full height.

I stare hopefully into the fireplace still. "Well, I guess it sucks to be old." Much as I hate to admit he is right, the smoke could indeed draw attention to us. The smoke could set Dalton running straight to us. My body is cold to the core. It feels like I might never get warm again ever.

Miles enters the room where I’m at and eyes a raggedy couch then points at it. "that looks like a pull out couch."

"Yeah. It is a pull out couch."

"Alright then. We got a bed."

"Kind of." I scowl.

He moves over to the couch grabs the worn-out pillows and tosses them to the side. Once all the pillows are on the ground, he grabs hold of a thick brown bar at one end and then yanks on it. There’s a loud squeak as the couch unfolds into a bed. The mattress on it is sunken in the middle. There are two sheets and one thin blanket. The bed isn’t as big. It is probably a twin at best.

He holds his hips. " Lighting a fire is too risky. But we can share body heat."

"Sharing body heat is becoming a thing with us." I bite my jaw.

"You’re welcome to sleep on the floor, Arlo. But I’m sleeping on the couch."

I glance at the thin blanket and faded sheets. These might even have bedbugs. God knows who slept in those things."

"I don’t think so. Bugs can only survive too long in the cold."

"You’re just a wealth of useless information, aren’t you?" I narrow my gaze.

Ignoring me, he grabs a hold of the blankets and sheets. He yanks them off of the bed and then goes outside. He shakes the bedding, one after the other. They are dusty as hell and he coughs a lot while at it. He does not stop shaking the bedding until they stop producing too much dust. He then comes back inside and lets out another rusty cough. "See, they’re good as new.

I roll my eyes.

He shrugs, tossing the blankets on the sofa bed. I need to shower." He says.

"Help yourself."

He heads inside the tiny bathroom. I spread back the sheets on the thin mattress. The water soon starts running. It is possible that plumbing was done in the cabin, but triple sure there is no hot water But Miles being who he is, I doubt if that will stop him from getting a shower. Soon after, he walks out of the bathroom, his bare chest dripping with water and his hair damp and slicked back.

The buzz of awareness shifting through me is almost impossible to ignore, and it annoys me. There’s no denying that Miles is handsome. Even though he has a nose that looks like it has been broken a few times, he still looks sexy. His lips are full. His cheekbones are high. I remember perfectly the feel of his hungry mouth on mine that night. My gaze drops to his sinewy biceps and I shiver. He has a raw alpha masculinity to him, just the way I like my alphas. The way his muscles flex beneath his smooth pale skin mesmerises me as he puts back the blankets on the sofa bed.

He glances over to his side and catches me gawking at him. I glance away quickly. He doesn’t say anything, however. Instead, he slips on his shirt and the raggedy sweater and slowly gets onto the bed. He groans as he lies on the bed. I don’t make a move to join him. And to my surprise, he doesn’t feel insulted. If anything, he seems to have forgotten that I exist.

He rolls onto his side and presents me with his backside. I summon myself to not focus on how his slacks hang on his muscular thighs and his firm ass. I have to admit though that it isn’t easy. He is a glorious male specimen.

He tugs the thin blanket over his body and I relent. Sleeping on the cold, hard floor would be foolish when I have the option of sleeping beside him. After all, he will not care and I’ll be the one to suffer. His body heat is the only option of warmth that I’m left with in this cabin. Rejecting the small bit of comfort that he offered just because I don’t like him is foolish.

I head to the bathroom and slip off my pants. Usually, I am very picky about hygiene but then not having a shower for two days doesn’t sit well with me.

When I got inside the cabin, the first thing I did was wash the blood off my face. I’d give anything to get a hot shower now, but I know that that isn’t going to happen. So I rub my body as best as I can with the frigid water and a piece of towel. At the back of the sink is a tube of mostly empty toothpaste. I squeeze it hard and manage to get a drip out onto my finger then rub some onto my teeth and gums. I crave the minty freshness. I would kill for a toothbrush right now.

Once I’m satisfied that I feel semi-clean, I head out of the bathroom and get onto the bed. Given how Miles is breathing, I can tell that he is awake. U slip under the thin material and grimace at its musky scent. I turn and face away from Miles so that my back rests on his. A few minutes later, a strange sense of peace from last night washes over me. Something about Miles soothes my inner omega. All of these emotions are new to me. I wonder if Miles feels them too, or it is just me.

My eyes close as I begin to feel drowsy

Miles clears his throat. "You did well today."

I open my eyes disbelievably. He is actually saying something nice to me. "You...you mean at the cabin?"

"No. I mean all of it. I expected you to whine and be a baby about it."

I scowl. "Gee, thanks."

He laughs gruffly. "All I’m saying is you’re a real trooper. You’ve barely whined about your finger." He shifts and turns to face me.

When he does that, my pulse goes haywire. Much as I have turned my back on him, I can feel him watching me. I hate when he gives me his full attention because it makes me nervous. I don’t want him to know that he gets me flustered in a way. "I’m still your enemy, Miles."

"I know."

I turn to face him too. The light is dim, however. I cannot see him clearly. "Why are you suddenly being nice?"

He hesitates. "Because you’ve earned my respect today."

Whether he respects me or not shouldn’t’ be my concern. But I’d be lying if I said his words didn’t please me. I get the feeling that Miles isn’t an easy man to impress. The fact that he respects me makes me flutter.

He is Sasha’s second. Why would I give a fuck if he respects me?
