Chapter 978: Chapter 40 Employer Identity
"Sorry, but Sister Korma is assessing a new person who wants to join the club, so you might need to wait a few minutes," the girl leading the way explained as she took the three warlocks upstairs and stood in the hallway.
The hallway was small, square-shaped, with a tall wooden door at the front. Two pieces of colored glass were embedded in the door, which did not display the Door God’s image that Zheng Qing often saw; to the left of the hallway was a wooden wall, with a row of flower pots in the corner, inside of which bloomed clusters of white Other Shore Flowers; to the right of the hallway was a narrow corridor. The corridor did not have any lights installed, but it was possible to vaguely see several hanging plaques floating in mid-air, arranged similarly to those found in the school’s office buildings.
The girl leading the way gently opened the front wooden door, motioning for the warlocks to enter.
Behind the door was a fairly spacious hall, with a small stage, bar, and tables and chairs. It looked more like a closed-down bar than a club.
The stage’s curtain was half-drawn, with no lights on, and it appeared dark and empty.
Below the stage, in the middle of the clear space, stood a piano, around which a dozen or so figures in grey robes were sparsely gathered, with intermittent and gentle piano music emanating from within.
The lighting in the room was dim, with the only bunch of fireflies all gathered above the piano, which made it difficult for the warlocks who had just come in from outside to adjust.
"Would you like to order anything?" the girl asked eagerly as she led the warlocks to the bar.
Xin Fat Man coughed softly, "Um, do you have Amber Light?"
"Just a moment!" The girl quickly took out a dirty glass bottle from behind and, with the dim light in the room, Zheng Qing could barely make out the thick amber-colored liquid inside.
Soon, half a glass of Amber Light was placed in front of Xin Fat Man, with two square ice cubes in the glass making the small amount of liquid look more substantial.
"For your convenience, that’ll be one gold bean," the girl said with a smile, pushing the glass towards Fat Man.
Xin Fat Man’s face turned somewhat pale.
"Oh," he chuckled nervously, then asked in a low voice, "This isn’t on the house, is it?"
"How fresh." The girl pouted, showing a hint of displeasure, "This place is a club, not a charity... Do you have to pay when you drink at a bar on the street?"
Xin Fat Man nodded blankly.
"As it should be." The girl smiled contentedly and turned to the other two gentlemen, "What would you two like to order?"
Ignoring Fat Man’s ashen face, Zheng Qing said with a suppressed smile, "Just a Green Bee for me, no ice."
"For your convenience, that’ll be one Silver Horn and three Copper Coins," the girl served Zheng Qing’s drink promptly. It was evident, a drink without ice indeed looked a tad less.
"Just water is fine, thank you," Xiao Xiao requested more conservatively compared to his companions. Even so, he didn’t escape the need to pay.
"One Copper," the girl quickly stated the price of a glass of water, serving it to Xiao Xiao at an even faster pace than the previous drinks, and enthusiastically suggested, "Would you like a bowl of peanuts? It’s only three Copper Coins and tastes better when eaten together."
Zheng Qing quickly stopped her sales pitch.
He would bet that if they took the peanuts, there would undoubtedly be profiteroles, sour jujube cakes, macarons, and other pastries awaiting them next. Most of the time, that’s how money slips away without one even noticing.
"Where is Miss Gini?" the young cost student tried to remind the girls of the purpose of their visit, "How much longer might we have to wait?"
"Oh, not too long," the girl stood on tiptoes and craned her neck toward the piano, pointing, "The one sitting by the piano is Sister Korma... She’s a very powerful witch, quite famous in First University. Don’t you know her?"
Zheng Qing was taken aback.
"She’s a witch?" His tone was slightly surprised, but he quickly apologized, "I’m sorry, I mean, I thought the one hiring us was a trickster."
"How fresh," the girl raised her voice, repeating her mantra, her tone becoming somewhat aggressive, "What trickster has the credits to pay you? The credits hiring you were hard-earned by Sister Korma herself... Are you sure you don’t want any dried fruits or pastries?"
Xiao Xiao politely but firmly declined the girl’s renewed sales pitch.
In the distance, a slight commotion broke out around the piano, and a dejected-looking male student squeezed out of the crowd and headed towards the exit of the club. It seemed he hadn’t passed that so-called ’assessment’ stage.
Zheng Qing didn’t pay any attention to the departing male student, his gaze drawn to the gap that had just appeared in the people circle.
More precisely, through the brief chaos that just occurred, he finally saw their employer for the day.
"Sister Korma?!" The young cost student shot up, sounding incredulous—at the first glimpse of the witch sitting by the piano, Zheng Qing finally understood where the feeling of familiarity that had been bugging him since a short while ago came from.
The employer Xiao Xiao was seeking, the so-called descendant of Italians and French nobility, was none other than the vice president of First University’s student council, and also the Sister Korma who had previously pushed him from behind—twice!
This fact alone made it all worthwhile for Xiao Xiao.
With that in mind, Zheng Qing immediately turned to glare at Watermelon Head.
Xiao Xiao’s gaze quickly withdrew, his eyes darting to the ceiling as he pursed his lips and silently whistled, feigning ignorance of the sharp gaze beside him, putting on an expression that said he had no part in the rainfall.
"I told you, you must know her," the girl behind the bar said, noticing Zheng Qing’s reaction and immediately cheered up as if basking in reflected glory, "My big sister Korma is the president of First University’s student council..."
Zheng Qing’s face turned dark, staring intently at Xiao Xiao, he lowered his voice and demanded, "Did you do this on purpose?!"
Xiao Xiao edged discreetly toward Xin Fat Man, shrugging his shoulders, "This is after all the first time taking on such an assignment. I thought it might be safer with someone familiar... I’ve been watching that bulletin board for many days, there were just two people I knew; aside from her, the other one was Sepulano... From any angle, I think Korma is a bit better than that gloomy fat man."
"Someone familiar? Fat man?" Xin finally snapped out of his heartache from the very expensive Amber Light he had purchased, picking up on a few keywords from Xiao Xiao’s statement, "What familiar person? Which fat man?"
"First University’s Sister Korma, our employer for this time," Xiao Xiao reminded from the side.
"Oh!" Xin Fat Man realized, his face lighting up with understanding, "So it’s the third or fourth boat under Brother Qing’s feet, right? I’ve investigated her... Hold on, she’s our employer? That’s a great thing... Brother Qing, can you get Sister Korma to give us a freebie?"
Zheng Qing barely resisted the urge to toss his glass of Green Bee into the faces of those two Soul Lights in front of him.
