...
"Snap!"
Xin Fat Man slammed a thick stack of newspapers, magazines, and internal reference materials onto the desk, startling Zheng Qing, who had been in a stupor at his desk for minutes, to jump up.
"Have you gone mad," the young scholarship student said, rubbing his eyes and shouting, "Didn’t you see someone was sleeping? Have some public decency..."
Because Mr. Octopus had blacklisted him, starting from now until the end of this semester, Zheng Qing could not enter the library to review his lessons. And because of last night’s release of the "Arcana" list by the magic wand, which placed the young scholarship student in the eye of the storm, Zheng Qing knew exactly what he should do, without needing Doctor Xiao to burn a turtle shell for divination.
Fortunately, today was already Friday, and there wasn’t much content in the morning’s Alchemy class or the afternoon’s Practice class that Zheng Qing absolutely needed to complete in the classroom.
So, he asked Xiao Xiao to help him take a leave of absence, planning to hunker down in the dormitory for three days to avoid the storm, out of sight, out of mind, and go straight to the exam hall next week.
But clearly, he overestimated his self-control and underestimated how unfriendly a warm dorm in winter could be to a wizard with the soul of a cat—from getting up in the morning until now, he hadn’t completed a single set of exam papers in the entire morning, his mind wandering between half-dazed and half-awake.
At noon, after class, Xin Fat Man brought lunch back for Zheng Qing and also took a detour to the campus newspaper editing room, borrowing a large stack of freshly received newspapers and magazines from the morning to give Zheng Qing a jolt.
"I don’t know whether to praise your broad heart or scold you for being foolhardy," Fat Man said to Zheng Qing in a sarcastic tone, "Maybe you should take the time to stroll around the campus... see how everyone is talking about you. All the bulletin boards are covered with your news, and it was very wise of you not to show up in public."
Bulletin boards are a common public facility at First University, featuring triangular eaves, and made of wood or metal; their dimensions are not standard, but they always reserve a blank space for students to use.
Students often post various notices, messages, and share information; the school also occasionally posts notifications and announcements on them.
Ordinarily, the bulletin boards are colorful, with a variety of messages coexisting. But today, all the bulletin boards Xin Fat Man passed by were plastered with posters about Zheng Qing, brilliant in red paper and black ink, one after another.
"I’ve always been quite aware of myself," Zheng Qing muttered, stretching out his hand to flick through the stack of newspapers and magazines that Xin Fat Man had left on the table, quickly scanning the headlines and major news from various media.
As expected, his inclusion in this year’s Great Arcana ’World’ had caused quite a stir in the Wizard World.
A freshman from First University, who had no outstanding contributions, possessed no profound mana, and wasn’t even the head of a major wizarding organization, had been added to the Great Arcana Sequence by "Arcana."
This was almost comparable to First University hiring a Trickster as a formal lecturer.
Indeed, after some digging, the media discovered that this young wizard held many titles—such as a scholarship student at First University, a recipient of the Merlin Medal at a tender age, and his hunting team had just won the championship in the rookie competition of the Campus Cup Hunting Contest. There were even rumors that the young wizard could perfectly replicate over a thousand basic runes.
But that was about it.
Compared to the other wizards in the Great Arcana Sequence, all of Zheng Qing’s achievements seemed child’s play.
Just like another wizard listed in this year’s Great Arcana, Su Shijun, no one would question her qualifications—Upper House Member of the Moon Council, attending member of the Big Wizard Meeting, head of a high-level laboratory at First University, etc. Any one of these titles could easily eclipse over ninety-nine percent of the wizards in the Wizard World.
It was not a lack of wizards, but rather a lack of fairness, that was the issue.
"I understand all that, but who is this Professor Trudeau?" Zheng Qing picked up a tabloid, shook it, and looked helplessly at Xin Fat Man, "Why is he so righteously swinging his fists at me?"
He was referring to the article titled "Forced to Resign, Professor Trudeau Vows to Fight to the End." In the article, Trudeau, the professor in question, vehemently criticized the selection mechanism for magical wands, questioned Zheng Qing’s identity, and called on the school, and those knowledgeable in the wizarding community, to unite against the injustices of this world.
Accordingly, the report also featured a picture.
In the picture, a handsome wizard, dressed in a moon-white robe and sporting a pair of shiny little mustaches, was angrily swinging his fists at Zheng Qing—if it weren’t for the layer of newspaper, Zheng Qing would undoubtedly have been beaten to a pulp.
"That’s the honorary member of the Wizard Council and the head of the First University’s Anti-Curse Research Department," Xin Fat Man reminded, "Didn’t you really like ’Days Dancing with Dragons’? He’s the author!"
"Oh, Professor Dragon!" Zheng Qing realized, "So his name is Trudeau, I always thought he was just called Professor Dragon... But what does this have to do with me?"
"Because you’ve taken his spot," Fat Man explained gloomily. "Professor Trudeau was the Great Arcana ’World’ from 2006-2008, for three consecutive years, and this year, you bumped him off... If it were me, I’d be upset too."
Zheng Qing gave a wry smile.
"An undeserved calamity," the young wizard murmured resignedly. "It’s not like I announce the list... and I never applied for any Great Arcana titles... Why should they target me?"
"Initially you didn’t provoke Sepulano either," Fat Man shrugged, referencing an old event while offering some comfort, "Sometimes, people just need a reason to blow off steam. As for you being at the forefront, absorbing other people’s anger, it’s just your bad luck."
"None of my damn business!" the agitated scholarship student exclaimed, slamming the newspaper down on the table.
In the picture, Trudeau’s clean robe was quickly soiled by oil stains from the table. After angrily waving his fists a few more times, he turned and vanished off the edge of the photo, leaving behind a vast empty gray background.
Who knows, maybe he went to find himself in another picture to borrow some cleaning fluid.
