Chapter 749: Chapter 97: Snake in the Snow_1
Ever since arriving in the wizarding world, Zheng Qing’s core beliefs have been teetering back and forth between destruction and reconstruction, stuck in a cyclical loop.
For instance, a mere doctor, feeling a slight irritation in his eye, popped out his eyeball to soak it in a potion, and after soaking, reinserted it, functioning as if nothing had happened. The school had hired parrots as receptionists for office buildings and their chirping was even quicker than that of comedians. Furthermore, in this school, cats could talk, mice raced around in clothes, and snakes didn’t hibernate in their holes during winter, but stood tall, enjoying the piercingly cold wind.
As someone who had experienced nine years of compulsory education and three years of supplementary education, Zheng Qing, the next-generation scientist, wasn’t an expert in the habits of snakes, but he had a basic understanding. At the very least, he knew that as a cold-blooded creature, snakes would become sluggish and easily enter a state of dormancy in cold temperatures.
He didn’t have a concrete concept of how ’cold’ this temperature must be, but he thought that, surely, once it started snowing and a thick layer of snow had accumulated on the ground, it should satisfy the condition for their hibernation.
"Is it frozen stiff?" the young public-funded student murmured, his gaze traveling above the shoulder of the gypsy witch, his tone revealing a hint of surprise.
In the distance, on the snowy field was a snake that shouldn’t be appearing in such weather.
He didn’t know why, but he felt that this snake looked familiar.
Hearing the wizard’s comment, Elena turned her head and easily located the uniquely colored snake against the backdrop of white.
A blue-black snake was propped up, curled around a fake mountain stone by the lake, standing tall and firm, unmoving as if it was looking at something in the distance.
Elena’s pupils suddenly contracted and her relaxed body instantly tensed up.
"Scared of snakes?" Zheng Qing promptly noticed the subtle change in his companion and a sense of bravery rose in his heart. He naturally stepped in front of her, reassuringly said, "Don’t worry, most of the snakes in the school are tamed... Wild snakes without owners are caught with our wands and placed in bamboo baskets. The next day, they are sent to Professor Li’s magic potion laboratory."
"Any animal that readily shows itself in the school isn’t stupid."
"Since it’s unafraid and openly coiled up there, it has probably been registered in the school... Such snakes are quite harmless, even if you stick your finger into its mouth, it would obediently spit it out."
His teasing remarks provoked a chuckle from the witch.
"Yes," She murmured thoughtfully, "Since it dares to roam around openly, it naturally is fearless, why should I be afraid?"
As if hearing the conversation between the male and female wizards, the spectacled snake in the distance leisurely turned its head and glanced at them. After sticking out its red tongue, it turned its head back again.
"Is it greeting us?" Zheng Qing raised his eyebrows, "I didn’t realize, it’s quite a polite snake."
Elena smiled and reminded him in a casual tone, "I had thought it looked familiar... Do you remember Liu Fei Fei? She seems to have a spectacled snake of about the same size."
Upon hearing her comment, Zheng Qing suddenly realized, understanding the source of this familiar feeling.
On the special plane for new students, Liu Fei Fei’s snake was stripped of its venom by the succubus Nikita. Its uncomfortably ’slick’ appearance left a deep impression on him. However, after the start of the school year, due to school regulations, he rarely saw Liu Fei Fei with her big snake.
Now as Elena mentioned it, with a glance, he easily associated the figure on the fake mountain stone with the big snake coiled up like a ball in his memory.
"She might be waiting for Liu Fei Fei?" The young public-funded student empathized, yet subconsciously thought of his own pet fox, his tone gaining a hint of sourness, "Now this is a dependable pet... Unlike my little fox, who acts like a big shot. I have to accompany it all the time, but it never watches out for me."
"Foxes, after all, are spiritual creatures and sensitive... Unlike Little Dragon who is straightforward." The witch comforted him.
Upon hearing her, Zheng Qing couldn’t help but laugh, "I’ve heard that snakes are gloomy, but this is my first time hearing they are straightforward... But your description is quite accurate."
Then he looked back at the spectacled snake and said, "I saw Nicholas at noon, he said Liu Fei Fei didn’t come to the library today... This snake is probably waiting here for nothing. Should I go over and convince it to go back?"
The fake mountain stone was just a short distance in front of the Book Mountain Library — Liu Fei Fei usually spent a lot of time at the library for six and a half out of seven days — so it was only natural for Zheng Qing to find a reason why the snake would be on the stone.
"No, don’t go." Elena instinctively pulled the wizard back.
Then, she realized her action was a bit abrupt and immediately explained, "Even if you go, how will you communicate with it? Can you speak Parseltongue? ... Perhaps due to the wind, it’s already in a bad mood. What if you get bitten by it and need to stay at the school hospital overnight?"
The explanation was very reasonable and made the wizard stop.
"Actually, I can speak a few words in Parseltongue," The young public-funded student blinked and leaned toward the witch’s ear to whisper, "Hiss... Hiss, hiss... Hiss..."
The warm exhale brushed against her earlobe, tickling her so she shrunk her neck back.
"What did you mean with your hissing?" She asked with a laugh.
"I was asking ’Hello Miss, may I ask why are you standing in this snow, what is the purpose of your visit?’" The young public-funded student switched his tone to a serious one and pretended to translate.
"Hiss hiss, hiss hiss; ha...ha." The witch also imitated the hissing sound but couldn’t hold in her chuckle.
"What do you mean by hissing?" Zheng Qing laughed and asked.
"I was asking ’how do you know the snake is a miss, and not a mr.’" Elena answered with a smirk.
Zheng Qing scratched his head, not knowing how to respond to this question.
"I just thought it was a female snake," The young public-funded student shrugged, coming up with an answer that shocked the witch, "Famous snake spirits like the White Lady, Xiaoqing, and the Queen are all female, aren’t they?"
"Your logic is flawless... I am at a loss for words." Elena rolled her eyes.
