Chapter 738: Chapter 86 Jiang Xiaomao’s Mental Journey_1
Jiang Yu was a bit annoyed now.
According to the original plan, she intended to shape-shift into a cat, and use herself as bait to lure the murderer of the kitten. The plan was perfect, but the reality was complicated— for instance, she ignored the possible impact of climate change on feline animals; after every transformation, she felt a strong urge to sleep. Additionally, the location where the kitten had been killed had become a focal patrolling area for the patrol team. Any movement triggered their attention, let alone a little cat refusing to leave.
Of course, there was an even more critical point. At the beginning of the plan, the young witch didn’t realise that as a kitten, she had barely any ability to fight against outside threats. With only a few transformations, each one ended with her fleeing in panic.
Just like the first time she shape-shifted, before she even managed to climb onto the fake mountain stone, she was scared away by a Kappa that crawled out of the lake. On regular days, encountering this kind of magical creature-- small and ugly, with a shell on its back-- she would just shout loudly, not even needing to bring out the law book. They would be scared out of their wits and flee in all directions.
But now, she was just a little cat, barely a foot tall, giving the impression of a kitten who still hadn’t shed its foetal fur.
Even a squirrel would dare to hop in front of such a small cat, not to mention the Kappa. After all, compared to squirrels, Kappas are evil animals that have made the wizard alliance "Dangerous Magical Beasts" list.
On another occasion, she managed to climb onto the fake mountain stone that night, but before she could keep her balance, the school patrol team loitered over from a distance, trying to catch her. Fortunately, a big black cat, as huge as an elephant, emerged from the grove— of course, this was just her subjective impression, maybe that black cat was not so big— anyway, thanks to that black cat, she managed to escape smoothly again.
After several incidents, the witch finally realised a very stern fact. On her own, or rather, with just a small kitten, she had no way of implementing the plan smoothly.
She could find help, but she definitely could not ask outsiders— after all, from any angle, her current actions violated more than one school rule, not to mention multiple unreported shape-shifting spells.
The people she knows now, whom she could trust ’her back’ with, though counting on her fingers, were not many. Li Meng was half, Liu Fei Fei was one, Zheng Qing had also offered to help— after all, she hadn’t been in school for long, and the relationships among university students were somewhat colder compared to elementary and high school.
Relationships within small groups were tighter, but outside the group, even students from the same class may speak less than three to five sentences a week. During class, everyone is focusing on listening and after class everyone has their own extracurricular life, which could be love, part-time jobs, or club activities.
Anyway, college is a transitional place between the adult world and the underage world. It adds some relaxation and happiness to the adult world, but also loses much of the sincerity and warmth of childhood.
Back to the point.
After thinking it over, Jiang Yu eventually did not choose any of the people mentioned as her helper.
Li Meng doesn’t even need mentioning. This little girl can provoke endless accidents just by staying quietly in the school. If she was to take part in her adventure, disregarding whether the elders in the family would be angry, her penchant for fainting easily was a cause for concern—even if accompanied by that stuffed teddy bear.
Liu Fei Fei would have been a good choice. However, the top student of the first grade in Jiuyou Academy had invested most of her thoughts, apart from studying, in the hybrid werewolf who had repeated the grade twice— Jiang Yu might not have been in love herself, but as a girl, she could easily pick up on the signs from Liu Fei Fei’s words. As far as she knew, Liu Fei Fei had devoted all her free time to help Nicholas studying. Even the short leisure time after lunch, she was busy marking papers, setting daily assignments.
Jiang Yu found it hard to convince the top student to waste the precious evening time, not to spend with her boyfriend, but to accompany a little kitten trembling in the cold night.
As for Zheng Qing, he had time and had expressed his willingness to help many times, and was also considered reliable. But recently, a continuous stream of gossip about him and the Gypsy witch ran through the class, such as them having candlelit dinner at the ’Yota’ restaurant on Pedestrian Street, and them adventuring together during the Yuan festival and so on.
Although in her heart, Jiang Yu felt it was their business and had nothing to do with her, and there was no need or reason to care, for some unknown reason, she always felt inexplicably annoyed when hearing these rumors.
So, Zheng Qing was the first name to be ruled out among the three, even before Li Meng— I’m doing this for his good, we can be considered friends after all, I can’t hold him back while he is dating.
The young witch comforted herself this way, picturing the shocked faces of certain people after she single-handedly caught the murderer, and couldn’t help but laugh softly.
But her smile faded very quickly.
She was a cat now and couldn’t do anything that didn’t match a cat’s expressions and movements.
Though whenever she thought about fighting alone, Little Jiang the Cat couldn’t help but remember that Kappa crawling out of the lake, that squirrel throwing pine cones at her, and the black hand of the patrolman reaching for her that night.
Then, she involuntarily thought of a certain black cat— she was unsure why, but that black cat gave her a very assuring feeling. That night, once she climbed onto its head, her shivering body from the cold relaxed completely.
If it could help her, none of these troubles would be an issue, right?
However, how to find that large black cat became an unsolvable problem before her— earlier today, Li Meng mentioned she met a little black cat in the grove that resembled the large black cat, describing its appearance, its magic of altering size.
According to the little witch’s description, Jiang Yu was quite sure that the black cat who could change size was the large black cat she was looking for.
It would usually hang out with a group of cats, and its activity area was this grove— this was the only clue Jiang Xiaomao could sort out.
So tonight, under the cover of night, using the shape-shifting magic permit she got this morning, and under the protection of the school’s formation, she brazenly wandered in and around the small grove, attempting to find traces of the black cat.
