Chapter 723: Chapter 71 Two Groups of Subordinates_1
"This is the place, right?"
"Duh! We’re just following the paper crane, wherever it goes, we go. How can we be lost?"
"But it’s pretty remote here, isn’t it? In a radius of about five hundred meters, it’s just us. Are you sure this is right? I mean, why would Brother Qing, a cat, run to such a desolate place...It’s giving me the creeps."
"Grow up! Even a cat is handling this better than you!"
"Even it’s remote, it’s still inside the academy’s grounds. How out there can it be."
Familiar voices floated over from the forest, it was the hunters from the Absolution Hunting Team chatting. A black cat which was squatting on a tree stump perked its ears to look in the direction of the voices — and in the time it took for the cat to move its head, the various cats that had been clustering around it scattered as if being chased off, disappearing without a trace in the blink of an eye.
The black cat turned back around, flicking his ears, a phrase rose unbidden to his lips, and he couldn’t help but voice it out loudly:
"Damn it!"
Are they sensitive, or just cowardly? They run off faster than rabbits at the slightest disturbance! No, even rabbits wouldn’t bolt at the sound of human speech, at least they’d stand up and look around first!
Ignoring the black cat’s swearing, the onetime bustling chatter within the forest vanished immediately after the phrase ’damn it’, then remained silent for a few seconds, before resounding once again.
"Confirmed, this is the place!"
"I heard Brother Qing’s voice!"
"Doctor, can cats really talk? Was that Captain Zheng who just spoke?" The last line was full of curiosity, and with this voice, the black cat also faintly heard the sound of a few crisp bells.
He narrowed his eyes — he was well acquainted with the voice’s owner, it was naturally the young promising alchemist from Alpha Academy, Lin Guo. But the owner of the bell was not someone easy to manage.
While chatting, several figures appeared in front of the black cat, having made their way around the large trees of the forest.
Leading the way were Xin Fat Man and Zhang Ji Xin. The Fat Man was holding a bucket of fried chicken, happily munching away while washing it down with beer. Zhang Ji Xin on the other hand, was dressed in hunting clothes, sporting gauntlets, with a Law book hanging on his belt - ready for action at any moment.
Following behind the two, was a huge black mountain goat with spiral horns, with a young boy sitting on its back, a small bell hung around the goat’s neck. As the goat trotted along, the bell jingled crisply with every step.
On the left side of the goat was Blue Bird, holding a sword, and on the right, was Xiao Xiao, carrying a notebook. Compared to the others, these two seemed somewhat absent-minded and appeared to be dumbly following the goat.
The black cat’s gaze lingered momentarily on the black mountain goat, took care to ignore the goat’s scrutinizing gaze and finally, landed on the red-faced male wizard’s figure.
"Ahem, why are you all geared up?" The black cat cleared his throat, attempting to greet everyone in the most normal tone he could, "Are we going on a hunt today? Where’s Dylan? Why didn’t he come?"
As soon as the black cat spoke, the previously calm atmosphere in the area instantly erupted excitement.
"Whoa, it’s true! The black cat! It talked!" Lin Guo shrieked, gripping Blue Bird’s shoulder, shaking him vigorously, looking all excited, as if he wanted to immediately shove the black cat into the laboratory: "Can I pet him? Just a little!"
Blue Bird immediately pushed down the young wizard’s arm, preventing his unrealistic plan before Zheng Qing could get angry.
"Dylan’s still sleeping in his coffin, it’s broad daylight, can’t you let people sleep peacefully?" This was Zhang Ji Xin answering Zheng Qing’s question.
"I just pointed out his outfit, too," Xin Fat Man grabbed a piece of fried chicken, habitually slung a dig at the red-faced male wizard and retorted ambiguously, "In the end, he’s just a show-off...Ever since our hunting team won the championship in the freshman competition, as long as he’s not in class, he can’t wait to wear that hunting outfit 48 hours a day!"
"A day has 48 hours in your house?" Zhang Ji Xin’s face reddened visibly at an alarming speed, and his fists clenched, his tone turning less friendly.
"It’s a rhetorical exaggeration, do you know what that is?" The fat man shrank back, sliding behind the tree stump where Zheng Qing was, hiding behind his bucket of fried chicken, and carefully rebutted.
Zheng Qing tilted his head up, taking a whiff of the air.
The air was filled with a tempting fried aroma, mouth-watering, making one’s fingers itch. Despite being in a cat’s body, he still had an appetite — he wondered what fried chicken wrapped in catnip would taste like, the black cat glanced at the fresh catnip not far away, and a thought suddenly surfaced in his mind.
"What’s the reason for calling us here," finally, the till then silent Xiao Xiao seemed to be woken up by the noisy surroundings, turned his head, found the black cat, and asked listlessly, "If you have something to say, just say it. I need to go back and take notes..."
"Taking notes, always taking notes, be careful not to be eaten by your notebooks!" The black cat muttered a sentence, raised his paw, pointed at the pile of mice in front of him, lifted his head, and looked smug, "Today’s hunt! Help me collect it... I feel like I’ll definitely be rated excellent in the end-of-the-year evaluation if I transform a few more times!"
Everyone’s attention finally converged on the pile of rats.
"Wow, there’s even bite marks!" Xin Fat Man casually tossed the half-eaten fried chicken onto the ground, not bothering to wipe the grease off his hands, bent over, and moved close to the pile of rats, "Didn’t you say that you would never catch any rats... hmm? It hasn’t been that long...doesn’t it smell amazing!"
The black cat didn’t understand Xin’s gag, but he clearly heard the last word the fat man said, out of concern, he turned his head sideways and took a worried glance at him. He thought that the Fat Man’s gluttony had now extended to dead rats as well.
He paused for a moment, and seeing that the fat man had no intention of eating the dead rats, the black cat finally set his heart at ease, and explained, "These rats weren’t caught by me... they were caught by my subordinates. Can’t you see the bite marks on the rats are different?"
"Subordinates?" The fat man took great effort to twist his head while bending down, and squinted at the black cat, "You have subordinates? You, have subordinates?"
The skeptical tone incensed the black cat and made him want to slap the fat man.
Luckily, there was still one person in the team who enjoyed teasing the fat man.
"If you could just poke your head out from under your butt, you’d see that Brother Qing’s subordinates are cleaning up the trash you just threw away." Zhang Ji Xin scolded unreservedly, "Even three-year-olds know not to litter randomly... You’re even worse than a cat, you’re a disgrace to all beings!"
Naturally, the fat man didn’t snake his head out from under his crotch, for him, such a challenging movement was something he would never be able to achieve in his lifetime. But he could adopt another method - the fat man pushed himself up on his knees, stood up using great effort, turned his head, and looked behind him.
The half-eaten piece of fried chicken that he had just tossed, was now being chewed by a small plush kitten.
"Meow." The kitten raised its head, let out a soft cry, then lowered its head again, concentrating on gnawing the half-eaten piece of fried chicken.
