Chapter 683: Chapter 31 A Pillar_1

Holding the gift box, Zheng Qing naturally wondered what gift was inside.

Due to the previous two gifts, his first reaction was that the box contained a charm gun.

"Is there such a lightweight charm gun?" The young state-sponsored student weighted the box in his hands, raising his eyebrows out of curiosity, subconsciously voicing his guess.

"A charm gun?" Elena was perplexed by the wizard’s reaction, asking curiously, "Why a charm gun? Do you want a charm gun as a gift?"

Zheng Qing suddenly realized - the witch in front of him, like himself, had participated in the freshman race and she did not know about his slingshot, so she probably wouldn’t have prepared a corresponding gift.

At the same time, he felt a bit embarrassed by his misunderstanding.

"I, I was just guessing." He stammered an explanation, his face slowly flushing, "Previously, I received several charm guns...I thought, I thought..."

"Thought I would send a charm gun as well?" Elena shook her head with a cheerful smile, "Charm guns are too expensive, I can’t afford to give them...But if it’s a few Fu Bullets, I can think of a way."

Zheng Qing sighed in relief seeing that she didn’t mind his blunder, and at the same time, thinking about the two charm guns he had received, he felt an additional pressure.

The natural way to alleviate the stress was to shift his attention.

Zheng Qing immediately untied the silk tie on top of the box and opened her gift in front of Elena.

The box contained a dark notebook.

The notebook seemed a bit worn, with greasy cover faintly retaining some traces that looked like bloodstains. Apart from that, the rest of the notebook was well-preserved - the pages were flat, and the corners were wrapped with thin metal pieces, giving it an unexpectedly neat appearance - but even so, this could hardly be considered a suitable gift.

Zheng Qing wrinkled his brows.

Of course, he wasn’t upset because the notebook was old - in fact, there could be no other gift that would satisfy him as much as this notebook - he had seen this notebook in Elena’s hands a few weeks earlier. At the time, the Gypsy witch had held the notebook while asking him about some complex symbols written in it. As a result, Zheng Qing had to waste a lot of time in the library and refer to a lot of materials before he could barely provide a similar solution.

For someone skilled in runes, there’s no better gift than a notebook filled with unfamiliar symbols.

"You’ve given it to me?" The young state-sponsored student asked in surprise, uncertainty still in his tone.

"What else?" Elena seemed a bit upset, saying gloomily, "Since you drew that card, naturally you have to give the most suitable thing for you..."

"If you don’t want to part with it, you can give something else." Zheng Qing offered quietly.

"Isn’t that deceiving yourself?" The witch looked at the boy in surprise, seemingly very curious about his way of thinking, "It’s understandable to deceive others, but what’s the point of deceiving oneself?"

Zheng Qing’s face darkened, and he didn’t continue the topic.

Just like Lin Guo’s timeline, the wizards’ thoughts are always filled with a certain magical color, making them difficult to explain logically.

Fortunately, Elena didn’t continue discussing this complicated issue.

"Oh! I almost forgot what I was supposed to do concentrating on choosing a gift for you!" The witch suddenly jumped, as if frightened, left the stupefied wizard, and ran towards the patio not far away.

Zheng Qing hesitated for a few seconds, stashed the notebook back into the grey cloth bag, then followed. Even though he was full of questions - such as where the notebook came from, and what kind of rune style it recorded, but thinking they were in someone else’s lounge and the phrase ’trespassing on private property’ came to mind, the young state-sponsored student couldn’t help but shrink back his neck.

Admittedly, he had accumulated a little bit of academic credits, and didn’t mind occasionally being deducted a few points for violating rules. But that didn’t mean he could freely squander his academic credits.

After all, he had to move onto the second year, and also had to use academic credits in exchange for many of the necessary resources for advancing to a registered wizard. Thus, he would save wherever he could.

The terrace of this rest room was very large, leaving ample space for the two people.

The terrace was originally covered with many vines growing around it, clinging to the railings of the terrace, but due to being late in autumn and early in winter, many plants had withered, and even those that hadn’t, many leaves had started to turn yellow. As a result, the railings that were originally hidden in the lush vines were now completely exposed.

"Although you see many railings here, in fact, the whole terrace is said to be carved from a single piece of Dali stone," Elena explained, her finger gently caressing the beautiful reliefs on the railings, her voice a bit elusive. "From left to right, forty-nine steps, seventy-two pillars in total...each pillar had a different relief, depicting the final appearance of the seventy-two Elves that were suppressed by the wizards..."

"Elves?" Upon hearing this, Zheng Qing couldn’t help interrupting, pointing to a relief on one of the pillars, and exclaimed, "This thing is an Elf? Isn’t it a demon?"

The peculiar creature he was pointing at had sharp teeth and claws, bat wings and a scorpion tail, and yet also had four faces and eight arms. It was staring upward and bellowing. Even though it was just a carved stone, Zheng Qing could feel the lofty resentment. This was not the qualities and appearance a good elf should have.

"Mountain ghosts, demons, they are all elves," Elena continued to check the railings on the patio. She hummed, "Cool breezes break the heat, sweet songs surround the seat, a courtyard with a faint moon and sparse stars. Elves do not have to wait until the fall, to wash, the blurred past and present."

After that, she stopped, standing still in front of a pillar.

Before Zheng Qing could see what was on that pillar, the witch tapped lightly on the pillar’s upper and lower joints, knocking the solid pillar down in a moment, startling the wizard - he anxiously glanced around, but there was no quake, no alarm, and no demon running out from the broken pillar.

It seemed like an ordinary pillar, just knocked down from the railings.

Before Zheng Qing could finish gasping, the witch took out another identical railing pillar from her bag and replaced it. At a glance, the patio recovered its completeness, just like in the beginning.

"Okay, we’ve finished our business, let’s go back!" Elena stood up, clapped her hands, and said cheerfully.

Zheng Qing looked at her confusedly.

"So, is it over?" He couldn’t help but looking at the ’real switch’ pillar again, whispering, "Am I the construction supervisor, then?"
