Chapter 633: Chapter 302- Just a bit of luck_1

Matthew Karen stood anxiously under a large eucalyptus tree.

Although the sunlight in the hunting ground was very gentle, as a vampire, Matthew always kept a respectful distance from those rays that carried heat radiation, so if he had the chance, he would always place himself in the shadows.

Like this eucalyptus tree.

This was a fifteen meter tall evergreen tree, its dark brown bark crisscrossed with many deep grooves, in which ants would sporadically scurry past, carrying aphid corpses. Among the tall canopies, the thick leathery leaves overlapped, casting a dense shadow at the base of the tree.

Matthew stood within these shadows.

He was using his gloomy eyes to examine the wilderness in front of him.

Fluffy golden mimosa flowers swayed gently in the breeze. These dandelion-like flowers, unlike the dandelions themselves, were unable to float effortlessly because they spent their entire lives attached to the shrubs. In comparison, the mimosa pudica fared much better. They too, had fluffy bulbous flowers, but because the mimosa pudica was mobile, these flowers always had the chance to fall off and drift to places farther away using the broad leaves of the purple foxtail grass.

However, no matter how far these flowers drifted, they were ultimately subject to the whims of the wind—they didn’t have legs or wings, and therefore always lacked independence.

Just like Matthew.

Until today, despite appearing gentle and courteous, the young scion of the Karen family had been harbouring many vague ambitions—he felt the Karen’s family territory was too crowded, but the old folks at home wouldn’t let him do anything. He stayed in the dark castle all day, living one day at a time—Matthew felt that he had a duty to improve this declining state of the family.

In the words of cousin Friedman, ’The old men’s bodies are decaying and so are their spirits...the future of the Karen family needs our young blood to save it.’

But when it came to actually executing, this young vampire whelp realized that thinking about doing something and actually doing it, were two completely different things.

Like this new student game at the hunting party.

Matthew Karen originally planned to make a name for himself in this new student game, to suppress that scholarship student who hooked up with beauties by using a handful of tricky ways, and remind the number one university of the glory of the Karen family.

For this, he was not afraid of hard work. He recruited many excellent hunters, sought the help of Sir Friedman, and had Alpha’s senior students help train his hunting team.

But after the new students’ game started, he gradually realized that merely having passion, detailed plans and ample logistics, could not guarantee that what he wanted to do would indeed succeed.

Because success also required a bit of luck.

Obviously, his luck was slightly off now.

Ever since they were thrown onto this unfamiliar hunting ground by the puppet, the Karen Hunting Team had not managed any significant gains—they did detect many demon reactions when they first entered the field, but strangely, these reactions started moving on a large scale, gathered, and then vanished?

Matthew originally thought that the unpleasant puppet host was playing a joke on the teams, but after scouring three previously locked demon reaction regions and coming up empty, the young Karen family vampire finally realized that something had changed, and his hunting team also needed to make adjustments accordingly.

So he first built a camp for the hunting team.

In this vast sparse grassland, the eucalyptus tree behind him was quite prominent in terms of both height and size, enough to be a continuously active conspicous marker; the massive body of the eucalyptus tree could also provide strong support for the camp’s array. Therefore, Matthew gave up on an area adjacent to a hill and a river not far away to set up his team’s advancement base beside this eucalyptus tree.

Once the camp was set up, he rearranged the responsibilities of his hunting team — no longer following the fixed one leader, two assist, one search, one roam pattern. Aside from Nankai and him staying at the camp, all the other hunters were sent out to conduct a large-scale search in the four directions of east, west, south, and north to trace the demons.

Adam Carlyle O’Brien went to search the south; Nankai searched the west; Elena searched the north, and even the little white mink of Nankai was assigned a task—to explore the east.

Yet, as the seconds and minutes went by, the hands on the clock spun round and round with no good news returning from the scouting team of the hunting party.

Within a five kilometers radius, no demons were found.

Within a ten kilometers radius, no demons were found.

Twenty kilometers, thirty kilometers, forty kilometers, still no demons.

The barren wilderness was devoid of all life.

There were no birds, no animals, nor the demon prey the hunting team was hoping for.

Matthew almost thought the scattered remains they found strewn across the hunting ground, left behind by the demons, were a sick joke perpetrated by some deranged puppet if not for their undeniable presence.

But where did these demons go?

Matthew gazed worriedly at the wilderness ahead, one conjecture after another popped up and was subsequently dismissed by him.

"The fifty kilometers search mission is complete. West, north, and south have all reported back with no traces of demons detected... Diao’er should be on her way back now, we should know the result in about five minutes."

Nanjian, sitting with his arms around his knees, stared at a small heap of leaves that was steadily smoking. He broke the calm under the Eucalyptus tree with his soft-spoken words.

"Let’s hope your little mink brings back some good news." Matthew forced a smile and continued peering intently at the desolate wilderness. An anxious expression surfaced on his pale face.

His thick, ivory-colored hunting jacket was unzipped, revealing a silver-white silk shirt beneath. A soft felt hat was tucked under his arm and the deer-skin gloves were removed, carelessly shoved into the pocket of his coat.

The hair that he always kept neatly groomed was now somewhat disheveled. A faint trace of sweat lingered on his forehead, giving a shiny appearance to his third eye chakra. This is highly unusual for vampires, whether sweating or being disheveled.

However, he could no longer be bothered about such things now.

Everything, either the puppet’s brutal act in the chapel or the strange hunting ground they were now in, starkly informed the young vampire of one fact - if this fledgling hunting team wishes to survive, they must excel in the hunting game.

A silver figure suddenly leaped out from the bushes, interrupting Matthew’s thoughts.

Before he could react, Nanjian sprang up from underneath the tree, excited to greet his little companion, "Are you hurt? Hungry? Thirsty? I have warmed up the milk for you..."

This is not a nursery!

Struggling to control the urge to yell, Matthew pulled the corners of his mouth into an uncomfortable smile, "Let’s not rush... Let’s first hear what she has found... Did she find anything to the east?"

The white mink pushed away the milk canister that Nanjian offered, squeaking out anxiously.

Nanjian’s eyes blinked, a smile slowly spreading across his face.

"My little mink told me, there’s a Tiger Demon marching towards us from the east... It will take another five minutes to get here." Nanjian triumphantly looked at the team’s leader, "Of course, according to her speed, that tiger demon should be about twenty miles away from us."

"Assemble the hunting team! Prepare for battle!!" Matthew’s fist hammered into the broad trunk of the Eucalyptus tree, joy filled his eyes.
