Chapter 614: Chapter 283: Wolf Pack_1

Blue Bird crouched low and slowed his breathing, taking off in swift strides, following the marks he had previously made.

His sword was slung across his back, the thin strips of cloth that used to wrap around it had been torn off and thrown somewhere. His dark red hunting outfit stood out in the grass, forcing him to take a tumble in a mud pond he had passed by. Not only did it help eliminate his scent, but it also dyed his clothes a color closer to the surrounding environment, reducing the chance of being discovered by the demons.

After this hunt, he would have to propose a change in the team’s uniform, at least its color.

With that in mind, he couldn’t help but recall his experience of rolling in the mud pond. The black mud felt slimy and cold, like a small jello melting under the sun, however sans the sweet smell of a jello, it exuded the unique stench of the prairie. Wondering if a wild beast had defecated or urinated inside, Diao’er disliked the smell, but for safety, he smeared it all over his body.

Thus, till this moment, Diao’er—or should I say, Black-Grey Diao’er—firmly hid inside his hood, ignoring Blue Bird.

A low growl sounded from behind him and the hood trembled slightly. The young Swordsman immediately regained his focus, his eyes turning sharp again, and lightened his running steps.

After a few brief exchanges, he had a profound understanding of the cunning of these Demon Wolves.

They feigned death, lured enemies, resisted the temptation of a wizard’s blood and strictly followed the leading wolf’s commands, even implementing encircling attacks following the rule of three!

More importantly, these Demon Wolves were thick-skinned and hard-fleshed. A casual sword strike would only make them bleed a few drops if it didn’t hit a vital spot, and wouldn’t even stun them.

They were not simply mad cannon fodder—infected by biting from a demon—they had been baptized by demon’s blood while being infected. Simply put, every core member of the Demon Wolf pack was as powerful as a low-level registered wizard or the Demon King from a regular demon group, not to mention the white leading wolf.

Then there was the real kicker: numbers.

Blue Bird suspected that this Demon Wolf pack had gathered all the Wolf Monsters in the hunting ground, almost up to a hundred! There were fewer than twenty core Wolf Monsters, but the other normal wolf monsters, under their control, seemed even more terrifying.

This was far more than what Xiao Xiao had seen in his divination—he suspected the leading wolf was behind this.

Blue Bird believed that, had he not spent his childhood hunting Wild Demons in the Qilian Mountains, any other hunter with less real combat experience would surely be laying in the warm stomach of the Wolf Demons by now.

Even so, he had lost his pouch during the fight with the Wolf Demons. Inside were the Armor Horse Charm, the Phantom Body Symbol, and the Concealing Symbol given to him by Zheng Qing and more importantly, the Communication Symbol used to connect with his teammates, rendering him incapable of sending an effective warning to the team.

So Blue Bird was now in a predicament.

He could either lead the Wolf Demons, who were far beyond anyone’s imagination, to his team’s camp, making his team face a sudden beast tide in panic—if they hadn’t eliminated the Monkey yet, they were about to face attacks from both sides.

Or, he could deceive the Wolf Demons, circle around, and then find a way to alert the camp. If it was possible, he could kill one or two straying monsters to reduce the burden on his team.

If he had brought a law book with him...

This thought just came to mind when Blue Bird promptly dismissed it.

Indecisiveness deliberation over loss and wrestling with reluctance aren’t fitting for a true Swordsman.

"I’m not alone."

With that thought in mind, the young Swordsman crouched even lower.

The prairie in front of him clearly diverges into two.

To his left was a patch of low yellow reed. Blue Bird knew if he ran forward along this patch of yellow reed for five minutes he would encounter a hill covered with buckthorn—Bun often referred to them as illuminating beans. These shrubs were adorned with clusters of small and beautiful flowers; Diao’er loved to bite them off.

Around the hill, there was a shallow stream flowing from west to east towards a forest burnt by the Absolution hunting team. If he followed the stream, he could reach his teammates in two minutes.

To his right was a patch of tall Yellow Back Grass. This cluster of grass could grow up to a meter high, obstructing his vision.

He couldn’t see where the ditches were, didn’t know where the rocks protruded, and couldn’t see the creeping vines and thorns on the ground that looked like venomous snakes.

The good news was if he chose to go right, he could easily disappear in this tall grassland, buying his team some more time.

The bad news was the Wolf pack could also ’disappear’ in these Yellow Back Grass areas. The grass stalks up to 1.5 to 2 meters high could easily cover any Wolf Demon’s head. If a hunter accidentally lost his direction, he might face dozens of mouths that are now wide open for food.

Blue Bird didn’t hesitate.

He pulled Black-Grey Diao’er out of his hood, the mud on its back was already slightly drying. The Swordsman flickered his eyes, fingers joined together and wrote a few words quickly on Diao’er’s back.

"Go quickly, let them save me...tell them the Wolf pack is strong, and there are many."

The usually reticent Swordsman was instructing Diao’er quickly by its ears, then he flung his arm, throwing Diao’er into the yellow reed on his left. For Diao’er, the 50-60 cm high yellow reeds were enough to conceal him completely.

But he himself, turned around and disappeared into the Yellow Back Grassland in a blink of an eye

After Diao’er landed, he stayed still for a few seconds. After turning his body, he immediately sprung into the yellow reed land, running straight towards the Absolution hunting team’s camp.

Ten-plus seconds later, dozens of swift figures reached the place where Blue Bird and Diao’er had parted ways.

Although the scent was already very faint, it didn’t interfere with these genetically modified Wolf Demons distinguishing the subtle differences of their prey. A slightly shorter, Gray Wolf Demon hesitated and looked at several tall black-wolf wolves.

The big wolves were also unsure.

But very quickly a deep growl from behind extinguished their hesitation.

With a few scattered howls, the Wolf pack split in this grassy field.

A Black Wolf, leading two Grey Wolves, followed Diao’er’s scent, while the rest of the Wolf Monsters, under the leadership of the remaining big wolves, plunged into the tall Yellow Back Grassland to chase the stronger scent of the wizard.

The breeze skirted by, the grass swayed, leaving the wild field trampled with disorderly fallen wild grass.
