Chapter 581: Chapter 250 Wizard Managing the Forbidden Curse_1
"Who is he?"
Finally, the curiosity in Thomas’s heart became too overwhelming, and he asked in a low voice.
Clearly, he was asking about the identity of the unknown old wizard. Zhang Yu turned his head and gave him a reproachful look as though he found the question somewhat presumptuous.
Without any concern, Old Yao flicked his pipe, scattering a few strands of ash, and lazily blew several smoke rings. "That old man? You can just call him Master Baoyangzi... He works for the ’related department’ of the first university, responsible for ’related issues’ involving dimensional fluctuations."
With that, he blew a ribbon-like white smoke from his mouth. The various smoke rings he had blown earlier deftly threaded through this white ribbon as if playing with a Nine Linked Rings puzzle.
However, the two assistants clearly ignored the little game of the professor — even Zhang Yu, who had been calm all along, was unable to easily brush aside the sentence that the professor had just said.
"Involving dimensional fluctuations?" Thomas swallowed quietly, carefully looking around before lowering his voice and asking, "Is it related to ’those several spells’?"
Many spells involve dimensional fluctuations, but the only ones put in charge by the ’related departments,’ which lack even a name, are the legendary ’forbidden curses.’"
As teaching assistants at the first university, Thomas and Zhang Yu were obviously not fools. Therefore, they immediately understood the professor’s unfinished intention.
"How much do you know about the ’related departments’?" Old Yao blew out a few more smoke rings, hung them on the white ribbon, smacked his lips and sighed, "It’s difficult, very difficult, to even play with rings."
Instinctively, Thomas ignored the professor’s comment.
He exchanged a glance with Zhang Yu, suppressed the excitement in his heart, and sped up his speech, "Everyone says that there is a ’Forbidden Spell Management Committee’ in the school, directly affiliated to the chancellor’s office, specifically responsible for managing the school’s four forbidden spells..."
"Some people say it’s ’five,’ aside from the four academies, the chancellor himself has researched a forbidden curse." Zhang Yu added softly, "Of course, these are all rumors."
Thomas went on, "It is said that only senior researchers who have studied in the four research institutes for more than thirty years have a chance to receive an invitation from this committee to participate in the improvement and research of ’forbidden curses’."
"Those recruited researchers would thereafter go incognito, becoming a ’Nameless.’ They would spend their entire lives exploring the process of ’truth’." Speaking up to here, Zhang Yu suddenly paused, hesitated for a while then spoke again, "I wonder if you have any impressions of the name Terri Duzem? He was a very famous genius alchemist twenty years ago. Some people said that he was specially recruited to work in the ’Forbidden Spell Management Committee’, and became a ’Nameless’."
With a pipe in his mouth, Old Yao squinted his eyes and stared at the melting building in the red light. He kept an eye on the old wizard inside, the Big Fox, and those black-robed researchers, while listening to the ’rumors’ talked about by the two teaching assistants.
After a long while, when the young assistants had run out of ’it is said that,’ the head of Jiuyou Academy finally lazily shook his white ribbon and looked at the wobbly rings of smoke, exhaling, "Rumors, often more complicated and more fascinating than the truth."
Before the two assistants could fully understand what he meant, he had dispersed the ’nine linked rings of smoke’ with one breath and said, "All the things I said earlier were just your own guesses. I didn’t say anything... and I don’t know what ’those several spells’ you were talking about are."
With that, he patted Thomas on the shoulder with a smiling face and turned to another young assistant with white hair and added,
"Zhang Yu, you are a straight shooter. You’ll be my witness, I didn’t say anything... The safety committee of the working committee has very keen senses. A slightest association with sensitive words will get you locked in the 404 black room, and be forced to write tens of thousands of words of inspection. Maybe you would have to reduce a bit of your memory before you can come out... It’s very troublesome."
The white-haired assistant could only smile bitterly and close his mouth.
"But, but," Thomas gaped, but could not utter anything for a long time until the corner of his eye caught the red light beside him and suddenly he had an epiphany, "Today’s accident is related to dimensional fluctuations, right? As a member of the accident investigation team, we have the responsibility to find out the whole story."
Noticing the raised eyebrows of Professor Yao, Thomas hurriedly added, "...before the First University’s Safety Committee or any other ’related departments’ prohibit us from investigating... we still have this responsibility."
Old Yao glanced at him, put the pipe back into his mouth, and mumbled, "Sharp... After being in the Starry Sky college for so long, surprisingly, your brain hasn’t turned into a muscle... The newer generation is not as good as the older one."
Thomas chuckled to himself, rubbed his nose, and pretended that Old Yao’s comment was a compliment.
Perhaps because the ’inside’ was quite stable, and there was plenty of time left; perhaps because the three of them were all inside the Four Symbols Barrier, free from others; or, it might just be they had nothing better to do.
Old Yao didn’t terminate the slightly sensitive subject between them.
With his arms folded and blowing smoke rings, he watched the two students he had once taught in front of him and hinted, "Do you remember the concept I mentioned about the nature of magic when I was teaching you the philosophy of magic and discussing Dimensionism?"
The two assistants fell silent for a few seconds.
"The world is dimensional?" Thomas speculated and was the first to answer.
"That is the nature of the world." Old Yao’s face suddenly turned sour.
"The nature of magic is dimensional fluctuation." Zhang Yu immediately took over, answering as if reciting, "Generally, when the state of a dimensional line descends from high to low dimensions, a large amount of energy is released; when the state of a dimensional line rises from low to high dimensions, a large amount of energy is absorbed... Dimensionists believe that the casting of spells by wizards is achieved through energy fluctuations generated by dimensional transference."
"Very good, very good." Old Yao clapped softly, looked back at the red light at the back, and asked, "Do you know which laboratory this is?"
"Applied Magic Research Institute, Ascend Dimension Experimental Research Institute." Thomas immediately answered.
Just a short while before, the assistants had discussed this issue. He remembered it very clearly.
Zhang Yu gave a faint smile, but remained silent.
"More precisely, it’s the Ascend Dimension Experimental Research Institute, Two-dimensional Evolution Laboratory." Old Yao added, pointing at the Big Fox in the red light," New member of the great wizard’s conference, member of the Council of Under the Moon, Su Shijun, he’s the director of this laboratory."
Unable to resist, Thomas looked up at the fox holding the ball of light again.
He didn’t know if it was an illusion, but he felt that the fox seemed to have moved a little and even shook its ears, smiling in their direction.
