Chapter 320: Chapter 244: Freedom and Justice_1
The badge, is a symbol of identity.
On the robes of each veteran student at First University, there are usually two badges pinned.
One is the octahedron logo of First University, the other is the logo of their respective academy.
The badge of Jiuyou Academy looks like a copper coin, circular with a square hole, and etched with tiny runic symbols; Alpha Academy’s badge is relatively simpler, twisted from a short silver thread into an ’α’ pattern, the silver thread also filled with dense spells; Atlas’ badge is even simpler, like a triangular iron, but its color is gold; Among the four academies, only the badge of Starry Sky Academy is a bit more complicated, but it is simply a hexagram.
It is said that these badges have the powerful magic of the school’s wizards, which not only helps students concentrate, but also repels dust and heat, resists many minor curses, thus making them quite popular.
However, only after participating in the opening ceremony could the new students receive these hefty metal insignia from their respective deans.
Bella, the lady of the school hospital, had complained about this rigid rule while treating Zheng Qing.
"If you had put on these badges as soon as you entered the school, not to mention these inferior sleep curses, even the Five Poison Curse or Plague Yellow Curse would not have fallen on you," the plump head nurse complained loudly, pouring Zheng Qing a large cup of smoky Talisman Water, almost choking him to death.
At that time, Zheng Qing was not fully awake, only vaguely hearing these complaints.
But this did not affect the deep impression he got from it.
The First Hall.
The new students have returned to the corridors behind the stone pillars.
The stone platform under the feet of Principal Nameless is once again slowly rising into the air.
White mist rolled out of the darkness again, transforming into ancient trees, giants, and different beasts, supporting the smoky stone platform below.
A short, chubby figure passed through the mist and stood in the centre of the great hall, standing on the complex Array.
"New students of Alpha!"
Her eyes were bulging, her red curly hair concealed by a large hat, making her seem even shorter and plumper.
But this did not affect the resonance of her voice:
"New students of Alpha, step forward!"
The white robes surged forward like the tide under the moon, rising and falling, finally stopping in front of the witch.
The figure of the witch was like a solid dam, standing in front of the white robes.
Zheng Qing noticed the small figure of Lin Guo.
He was standing at the very front of the Alpha queue. His oversized academy robe trailed on the ground, making him look a bit sloppy. The Black Mountain Goat beside him would occasionally bite the corner of his robe, preventing the young male wizard from tripping over.
But this amusing scene did not provoke Zheng Qing’s desire to tease.
His attention was focused on something else that surprised him.
"Professor Emma?" Zheng Qing looked around, his tone somewhat incredulous, "Is she the dean of Alpha Academy? Why didn’t anyone tell me about this! Isn’t she the professor who taught me?"
"Who said that professors from Alpha Academy can’t give us lectures? In Old Yao’s Philosophy of Magic class, there are also those registered wizards from the research institute" Xin Fat Man sneered at the scholarship funded student with slanted eyes: "Also, why would someone need to specifically tell you this... Isn’t this something that’s already well-known? Does it need special emphasis?"
Zheng Qing opened his mouth, unable to respond.
"Do you know who the dean of our academy is?" Xiao Xiao suddenly turned around and asked.
The scholarship-funded student blinked, finally shaking his head quietly.
This time, even Zhang Ji Xin and Jiang Yu couldn’t help but turn their heads to look at him.
"Nobody told us about these things... right?" The scholarship-funded student was muttering, adjusting the collar of his red robe, feeling somewhat embarrassed, "And there’s no introduction to the deans in ’Entering First University’
"Does everything need to be told to you," Xiao Xiao said sharply. "You’re already an adult... Don’t always act like a child."
Zheng Qing looked offended, squeezed himself in front of Doctor Xiao, and gestured the height difference between the two of them.
Xiao Xiao was half a head shorter than him.
Poseidon’s head popped out of his hat, sticking out his pink little tongue, grinning wildly.
"Childish... You’re as childish as your dog." Doctor Xiao kept a straight face, hugged her notebook, turned her head, and looked at the white-robed wizards in the field receiving their badges.
"Poseidon is a fox!" corrected Zheng Qing.
...
"New students of Alfa Academy!"
The professor emcee stood diagonally in front of the new student lineup, holding a hefty register of names, and pronounced boldly:
"New students of Alfa, when you hear your name, please come forward in order to receive your badge."
"Your animal companions may accompany you to receive blessings."
"Now, the first new student."
"Lin Guo!" He called out the first name.
The little wizard stumbled forward, seeming as if he would fall at any moment.
This made many in the crowd hold their breath.
In contrast, the black goat at his side walked with balance and poise.
Professor Emma sported a stern face, watching him intently until Lin Guo straightened up. Only then did she take two silver badges from the tray held by the little elves, and hang them on the young wizard’s chest.
In the crowd.
The young publicly-funded student seemed to have forgotten his friction from a few minutes ago, and quietly asked Doctor Xiao, who was seated next to him: "Do you think the Alfa Academy’s badges are made of pure silver?"
"I don’t know," Xiao Xiao replied curtly.
Zheng Qing made a ’tch’ sound and shifted his gaze back to the center of the hall.
Lin Guo had returned to the end of the lineup with the Black Mountain Goat, jubilantly waving his badge in the air at every face he recognized.
The little blue elves wore translucent white veils, carrying silver trays, floating above each new student in neat ranks, resembling a host of angels.
After each new student received their badge, the little elves would lift the silver tray and swiftly turn towards the depth of the hall and disappear behind the vast curtain.
"How much longer..." Li Meng tugged at her cousin’s robe, already growing impatient.
"Quiet!" Jiang Yu pinched her ear and reprimanded the little witch.
Pigeon Xiao Bai rubbed against the slightly red ears of the little witch, making soothing cooing sounds from his throat.
Li Meng pursed her lips but didn’t complain again.
One hundred and more new students, not a lot yet not a few.
Yet, Professor Emma showed no signs of impatience; she carefully fastened the two badges for each new student, one after the other.
After the badge pinning, Professor Emma stood in front of all the new students and began to address them, saying:
"Talent, is the gift that stems from our blood."
"Every person’s blood carries their own talent."
"In Alfa Academy, you will be able to explore your potential and demonstrate your talent!"
"Justice is fairness; freedom is the ability to let go. We let go of what we are not good at and showcase what we are good at—this is our pursuit!"
"For freedom and justice!" The new students of Alfa stood erect, looking determinedly at Professor Emma.
Professor Emma closed the Law book in her hand.
A series of white lights pierced from the magic array beneath her, shooting towards the endless darkness overhead.
Seconds later, dazzling white light poured from the void above, as if a long river was submerging the white-robed wizards.
The entire First Hall was bathed in a milky white hue, as the ancient building seemed to become a sanctum in the middle of the Garden of Eden.
Zheng Qing could not help but raise his hand to shield his face.
His eyes were painfully stung by the white light.
