Chapter 272: Chapter 196_1
Two slender threads descended from the ceiling.
Tied to the threads was a stick as thick as a finger, on which stood a colorful parrot.
This was a precious Persian Tiger Parrot.
Compared to the cute and petite Tiger Parrots, the Persian Tiger Parrot was as big as a common owl, seeming quite imposing. Furthermore, most Persian Tiger Parrots were tricephalic: the left head was tender green, the right one was sky-blue, and the middle one was a mix of both colors, appearing somewhat grey and dull.
Despite its bizarre looks, the Persian Tiger Parrot was universally recognized in the Wizard World as a wisdom creature. The Wizard’s Code had even formally established its legal status as a ’fully behaviorally capable’ creature—this made for a stark contrast with Alchemy Elves.
Of course, due to innate physical limitations, there weren’t many jobs in the Wizard World suitable for Persian Tiger Parrots. Most of them were hired by churches’ choirs, or worked as order announcers in restaurants or number callers in wizard banks.
The Persian Tiger Parrot before them was an employee of the First University.
On each of its split heads, there was a stiff, high waisted, grey hat.
The hat brim was embedded with the First University’s tetrahedral logo.
Maybe because the hats were somewhat heavy, or perhaps the office atmosphere was a bit bothersome. At this point, the hats on this Persian Tiger Parrot seemed a bit crooked, looking like they would fall with a slight tilt of the head.
"Number twenty-three! Number twenty-three!" the green head of the Persian Tiger Parrot croaked with a raspy voice: "Examinee number twenty-three, report to interviewer number five!"
"Number twenty-four! Number twenty-four!" the blue head’s voice was a bit shrill and seemed more anxious. "The twenty-fourth examinee, report to the ninth interviewer! Quick!"
"Examinee number twenty is confirmed to be late, today’s interview eligibility is cancelled." The middle head mumbled this message a few times, before immediately burying its head into its feed tray, eating rigorously.
It seemed to be famished.
A few elves in gray uniforms darted around, serving the hardworking parrot.
Some elves were adding food to the parrot’s tray, some were shuttling back and forth between the parrot and the office desk to pass on notes, there were even two elves holding small brushes, specifically hired to smooth this large bird’s colorful feathers.
"This Persian Tiger Parrot is a veteran member of the student council," the short wizard nudged Zheng Qing towards the waiting area and explained, "Apparently, it was a friend of the student council president back in ’88 and migrated from the depths of the Silent Forest...It stayed for over twenty years and is now over forty years old, which is pretty old for a Persian Tiger Parrot."
"I don’t know if it’s mid-life crisis or not, but its temperament has been terrible recently." The short wizard sneakily glanced at the parrot on the bird stand, lowered his voice, and whispered into Zheng Qing’s ear: "So when it’s calling out the numbers, you must pay attention...Respond fast. If you don’t respond within three calls, it will cancel your interview eligibility."
Zheng Qing’s eyes widened in surprise.
Although he knew that Wizards regarded Persian Tiger Parrots as wisdom creatures, allowing a bad-tempered parrot to decide his interview examination seemed inappropriate to him from all aspects.
"It is entitled to this." Seemingly noticing his discontent, the short man added, "It is an honorary member of the First University’s Student Council...having formerly served as an honorary chairman for ten periods, from ’95 to ’05."
Zheng Qing swallowed. Finally, he remembered that he was in the Wizard University of the Wizard World.
"There’s nothing impossible in this world," he comforted himself as he sat down on a bench in the waiting area.
Still, an odd sensation lingered in his mind.
He could almost see a colorful large parrot striding back and forth on the main seat of the conference table, shouting with its three heads. The various members of the student council sat neatly on both sides of the table, their heads lowered, enduring the tyranny of the large bird.
Suddenly, he couldn’t help but laugh.
"Your number is fifty-six," said the short wizard as he gave Zheng Qing a surprised look and handed the number card back to him. He patted his shoulder comfortingly and said, "You might have to wait a while... don’t be nervous, I think highly of you!"
With that, he gave him a thumbs up and a comforting smile.
Zheng Qing managed a thankful smile.
The short wizard nodded in satisfaction and quickly ran back to the office area to guide the new candidates.
Zheng Qing sat on the long bench, took out his law book, and reviewed the content of the only spell he had written down—a binding spell—then took out his grey cloth bag to check if his writing brush had bald spots, if the ink was smooth, if the little snake on the inkstone was awake, and if the size of the talisman paper was right.
After the repetition of the unfulfilling work, he stuffed the grey cloth bag back into his bosom, blankly looking at the parrot overhead, falling back into a state of idleness.
Then, the conversation between two girls behind him caught his attention.
"Have you heard? The demon that slaughtered several magical creatures in the Jiuyou Academy has been captured," a coquettish voice said, "My cousin is a minister in the Alpha Student Council... He said the school committee has already sent notices to various colleges. By Monday, we should receive the notification."
"Really?" another soft voice, sounded a bit frightened. "There are monsters like that in the academy? That’s simply terrifying."
Zheng Qing had to struggle to resist the urge to turn around and argue.
They are just two little girls who don’t understand anything, he comforted himself internally, it’s not worth arguing with them.
Indeed, after a few words about current affairs, the girls quickly shifted their attention elsewhere.
"Do you know the names of the interviewers? I think knowing some information about an interviewer could be helpful."
"I don’t know, but I heard that these interviewers are all from the student council...many of them are club leaders from the school."
"It would be great if there was more time. I could have done some simple divination, at least it gives some kind of reassurance."
The two girls were mumbling and babbling, which made Zheng Qing feel a little unsettled.
"I wonder what questions they’ll ask."
"Those tables must have been enchanted... I tried listening earlier but couldn’t hear anything."
"I heard from my cousin that they’ll ask about your specialties, hobbies, and habits. Some interviewers even ask about your eccentricities!"
"Why are they so creepy!"
"Technically speaking, they don’t want any weirdos in the student council."
"Can such a simple interview... really do it?"
"There are people with strong divination abilities in the student council and they participate in the preliminary screening. They give us comprehensive evaluations...the accuracy is quite high."
"I kind of want to go home..."
"They’ll also ask about your goal position, plans, and study status."
"Oh! Anything they wouldn’t ask?"
"Your bra size...because they can tell at a glance."
The two girls said these, and they laughed and frolicked around.
Feeling as if he’d heard something inappropriate, Zheng Qing immediately concentrated his attention on the Persian spotted parrot on the cage, doing his best to ignore the conversation behind him.
Nothing was known about how long the wait was.
At last.
The Persian spotted bird on the stand called out Zheng Qing’s number.
"Number Fifty-Six! Number Fifty-Six!"
The sharp voice from the blue head on the right side of the big parrot was piercing, enough to give a headache:
"Examinee Number Fifty-Six, report to the seventh interviewer!"
"Reporting!" Zheng Qing responded loudly, quickly standing up, and dashing towards the interview area.
