Chapter 247: Chapter 171: Verbal Condemnation_1
When the bell rang at the end of the class, the students were still recovering from the shock they’d just received.
Applause, cheers, bangs from the tables and stamping on the floor mixed with the sounds of hoarse screams and some explosive sounds created by magic. The classroom atmosphere was chaotic.
The school custodians, little elves in grey uniforms, were flying everywhere, frightened by the outburst of the young wizards. Some were hiding at the top of the curtains, others behind the ceiling lamps. A few even opened the cupboards in the back row of the classroom, trembling as they hid between the heavy books.
After a ton of effort, Tang Dun and several students from Alpha Institute finally managed to drive the young eavesdroppers, whose curiosity was aflame, from the classroom.
Only Zheng Qing and a few others, along with Xiao Xiao, remained in the classroom.
"Watch him," Tang Dun reminded, poking his head into the room before leaving and shutting the door behind him. "Wait a few minutes to let the corridor clear out a bit... Don’t let him do anything stupid!"
With that said, Tang the Headmaster closed the classroom door heavily.
Despite the thick classroom walls, the eager pleas of students wanting to meet Doctor Xiao, and Tang the Headmaster’s desperate attempts to dismiss them outside could still be faintly heard.
Several brave little elves poked their heads out from behind the curtains to gauge the situation.
On seeing that there were still people in the classroom, they squeaked in surprise and quickly hid again.
Xiao Xiao sat quietly in his seat, upright, his thick notebook laid flat in front of him.
"Actually, this isn’t particularly stupid," laughed Zhang Ji Xin suddenly, "At least because of his antics, Mister Sima didn’t give us any homework for this class."
The other boys let out soft laughter.
Only Xin the Fat Man kept his stern face.
"I’m disappointed!" The fat man pointed vigorously in the air with his stubby index finger, saying in a nearly gnashing voice, "Very, very disappointed!"
No one asked why.
They all knew why he was disappointed.
"Doctor... Xiao..." Zheng Qing spoke in an extended, friendly tone, lightly massaging Xiao Xiao’s shoulder, "Don’t you think.... you should say something to us?"
"You went behind our backs and pulled off this stunt!" Xin the Fat Man stomped back and forth in front of Xiao Xiao, waving his arms angrily, "That’s so disappointing... you could’ve discussed it with us."
"Discuss what?" Zhang Ji Xin cocked his head, cracking his knuckles, "Discussed whether we should hold a Law book and pray together when he confessed? Or discussed inviting a bunch of Cupid-style elves to scatter flowers in the classroom?"
"This book of his has not a single word in it!" Zheng Qing peered over Xiao Xiao’s shoulder, surprised, "I always thought his notebook was filled with notes."
"The point!" Xin the Fat Man cried in frustration, "Is that the point? Is this the time to concern ourselves with whether or not his notebook has any notes? Our Headmaster, Tang the Headmaster, is out there dealing with this unexpected disaster. Is it the time to concern ourselves with his notes?"
The sounds of Tang Dun’s shouting could still be faintly heard from outside the classroom.
Zheng Qing decisively shook his head.
"I say," Duan Xiao Jian joined in the conversation after a few laps around the classroom, "Do we really need to watch him this closely? He’s already confessed in front of everyone during class... What more could he do that would be stupid?"
"Did you anticipate that he would do this?" Xin the Fat Man looked cubbish, sighing heavily.
Duan Xiao Jian was taken aback, shaking his head rapidly.
"So," the Fat Man stressed, "why can you so confidently predict that he won’t do something... even stupider in the future!"
"It’s not like he’s going to break into the Professor’s houses in East Peach Garden." Zheng Qing let out a dry laugh, turning towards Xiao Xiao, "Right?"
Xiao Xiao remained quiet in his seat, not making a sound.
He was, however, rapidly scribbling in his notebook with a quill that seemed to appear out of nowhere.
The black ink sank into the paper as soon as it left the quill, leaving no trace.
The notebook remained fresh, smooth, and clean, as if it were a new notebook freshly unwrapped.
Because of Xiao Xiao’s quick movements, Zheng Qing couldn’t work out what he was writing.
"This book is really interesting." The young student surreptitiously eyed the swiftly moving quill, murmuring under his breath, entirely forgetting the question he had just asked.
"Were you born a goldfish?" Xin Fat Man slapped Zheng Qing’s shoulder in disappointment, "Have you already forgotten what we were just talking about?"
"Huh?" Zheng Qing turned back, dazed, then snapped back to attention, "His notebook is strange!"
"We all know his notebook is strange," Xin the Fat Man pushed Zheng Qing away, wrapped his arm tightly around Xiao Xiao’s head, and pointed at his notebook with a chubby finger, seething, "Just like its owner... everything is strange!"
"I know that Dr. Xiao is a man of great knowledge. I hadn’t realized his hobbies were so eclectic as well." Duan Xiao Jian flattered in a revolting tone, "Worthy of the universally acclaimed ’Doctor’!"
"The ’Book of Appearance’ says ’his behaviour is light and thin as flames, his eyes tilted reflect both shallowness and silver’," Zhang Ji Xin jumped onto a table with a serious look on his face, flipping through the Book of Appearance and lecturing the others, "Look at Doctor Xiao’s fiery face, his eyes slanted, looking permanently upwards - his demeanour is that of a wanderer!"
"I bet your face looks more on fire than the Doctor’s." Zheng Qing couldn’t help but take a shot at Zhang Ji Xin’s red face.
"This is vitality!" Zhang Ji Xin’s face turned red, and he began to pant heavily. "Vitality, do you understand? The vitality blessed with a vibrant spirit... completely different from his full face of peach blossoms!"
"I said this morning when he was fussing over his new belt, powdering his face, and messing around at the dressing mirror for almost an hour," Xin the Fat Man suddenly sighed dramatically like it was all suddenly crystal-clear, "So, it was all for this... If he’d given us a heads up, although my magic is limited, I could’ve definitely plucked a few roses from the garden for him."
While they chattered, the noise outside the classroom gradually faded until it was inaudible.
Zheng Qing took out his pocket watch and saw that half an hour had already passed.
Because there was still Old Yao’s Philosophy class this afternoon, he asked everyone to get moving.
The little elves came out from the corners of the classroom, happily flitting around and celebrating the departure of the rowdy young wizards.
The stick figure on the piece of paper behind the door weakly yelled, "Dismiss... class..."
