Chapter 1434: Chapter 181: In the Black Prison

This is a world shrouded in darkness.

The earth is pitch black, the night sky is pitch black, the world is pitch black.

A pair of crimson eyes quietly opened in this darkness, looking around.

The night conceals its body, but not the emaciated presence that suggests a stray dog. It stretched out its lean forelimbs, crouched low, and crawled forward like a real stray dog, making no sound whatsoever.

This is the basic skill to survive in this dark world.

Because no one knows how much danger lurks in the darkness, how many lives have been buried after the danger.

The crimson eyes flickered in the dark, the ’stray dog’ figure slowed down, and finally, in a corner of its memory, it touched a dry leg bone.

The crimson eyes brightened for a moment.

Then disappeared.

In the silence faint creaking sounds could be heard.

The dry bones were ground into powder by teeth, mixed with saliva, and swallowed. The taste was a bit bland, and indeed not very nutritious. But within the Black Prison, finding even a little bit of food was the greatest fortune one could have in struggling to survive; it could not hope for more.

Thinking of the word ’hope,’ the ’creaking’ in the night stopped for a moment.

Whether it remembered the scenery under the clear sky with white clouds or the tenderness of fresh flesh. Originally, having stayed in this world for so long, such words should no longer affect its mood. But lately, for some reason, it recalled those words and their underlying meanings more and more.

Words like hope, like hope, like despair.

Just as the ’creak’ paused for a moment, a dull booming sound suddenly came from the pitch-black sky above, as if a distant thunderstorm.

The crimson eyes looked up, gazing into the sky.

Above was not a brilliant starry sky, but layer upon layer of black clouds. It was said that behind those clouds, terrifying magic circles lay hidden, capable of easily strangling a Great Demon. When it was thrown into this world, it was only a True Monster with a bit of fame, equivalent to those Registered Wizards in the Wizard Covenant, and had no chance to experience the terror of those magic circles.

It could only feel the oppression beneath those layers of clouds.

The thick clouds concealed everything.

On a normal day, those clouds might not fluctuate for months, years, or even decades. Even if new people are thrown in by the Wizards from the outside, they would not stir a ripple in those black clouds.

But recently — it might be a few days, or perhaps a few months, or even longer, for the inhabitants living in this pitch-black world, time holds no meaning — anyhow, recently, there’s been increasingly more activity between the layers of clouds.

Sometimes there would be continuous flashes of light behind the clouds.

Sometimes there would come unending rumbling sounds from behind the clouds.

At other times, the clouds might even tear open a hole, and some Wizards in black robes would fall through.

It had once witnessed such a scene from a great distance, where the Wizards in black robes seemed like birdmen with wings, gently falling along with the daylight. Although far away, it could faintly, through the dull wind in the dark, sense the drool-worthy scent emanating from those Wizards.

Many senseless Demons, like moths drawn to a flame, lunged towards the heavenly light and were reduced to puffs of ash. Although it was weak, it still had enough sanity not to seek death like its kind, but, like other old Demons who had been in the Black Prison for countless years, coldly watched that heavenly light.

This light connected the world beyond darkness at one end and the strongholds within the Dark World at the other. Those strongholds belonged to the Wizards and were used to oversee the prisoners in this Black Prison. It once doubted whether the Wizards intended to completely destroy the prisoners in this world; otherwise, why would they send such a number of Wizards into the Black Prison.

Until today.

Once again, unusual sounds came from behind the clouds.

After the rumbling noise, the clouds did not quiet down completely. Suddenly, a vortex appeared among the clouds. Initially very small, like an unripe green pea, but soon, the vortex spun faster and grew larger. In a moment, the green pea turned into a bottomless black hole.

Unlike usual, today, on the other side of the hole was not the glaring daylight, but a brilliant starry sky.

Bang!

A giant figure broke through the starlight and emerged from the vortex, crashing heavily into this dark world.

It was a Roc.

It spread its wings, as if it could cover the entire sky. However, this world was originally very dark, and even if it covered the whole sky, it would not cause any more changes to this world.

Nevertheless, its arrival attracted many covetous gazes.

"Come down."

A broad Divine Thought guided the Roc, leading it to descend from the sky.

At the same time, a giant hand emerged from the ground, its fingers wide open, held flat as if it was a makeshift landing pad.

The Roc landed precisely on the palm.

Then the hand clenched and retracted, disappearing back into the boundless darkness in the blink of an eye. From afar, a few mournful howls faintly carried through, accompanied by specks of crimson, adding a horrific hue to the night.

...

...

’Wild Dog’ chewed on the dry bone powder in his mouth, feeling a surge of irritation rising in his heart, continually replaying the brilliant scene that followed the vortex.

Usually, the bone powder could slightly suppress his hunger fire, but today, for some reason, the more he chewed, the less flavor it had.

His crimson pupils flickered in the darkness.

Eventually, with a bone in tow, he arrived at a series of ravines.

Unlike other places in the Dark World, a persistent sulfur scent lingered over this area of the ravines. ’Wild Dog,’ biting the bone, picked a shallower part of the ravine, opened his five fingers, and began to dig through the black gravel.

The ravine gradually deepened and widened under his excavation.

At some unknown time in the heavy darkness, a dark red color appeared. The dark red slowly trickled and pooled in his gaunt fingers, soon forming a small pool of orange-red.

This was the magma from under the ground.

It was also one of the few colors and flavors that belonged to the prisoners in this world.

The orange-red glow shone on ’Wild Dog’s’ face, revealing a pale, skin-stretched-over-bone, skull-like visage. He greedily stared at the pool of magma, reminded of the spicy hot pot he had eaten a long, long time ago, its base also of this color.

Then, he dipped the bone he was biting into this ’hot pot base’ and swished it around.

The bone emitted a charred and greasy smell, mesmerizingly captivating.

He took a deep breath, trying to lock that scent firmly in his chest, wanting to dispel the brilliant starry sky and the great Roc that could fly freely from his mind.

In the distance, another pool of firelight occasionally lit up.

The hot magma rolled between the ravines, bringing some brightness to this world, but like fireflies under the night sky, this faint light could not bring hope; instead, it made the world seem even more desperate.
