Chapter 1168: Chapter 230 Raven Sings
Just like when he had arrived, Friedman was the last ’Devil’ to leave the meeting room.
He wanted to continue the conversation with Lord Kannai about the leadership rotation between Lei Zhe and Augustus—a topic any student at First University would find interesting—hence, he didn’t think touching upon this subject would expose his identity.
Of course, discussing this topic with Lord Kannai was not because he expected to receive any unexpected help, although he wished he could. The more important purpose of the conversation was to ascertain his own or Sepulano’s standing in the eyes of others, thereby indirectly deciding how he should proceed and whether there was further hope for him.
During the latter half of the meeting, Friedman had tried to broach this subject but ultimately gotten derailed by the Witch Leviathan wearing the Cat Mask.
"This is the meeting room of the Seven Sins, gentlemen," Leviathan had said with a light chuckle, after interrupting Friedman, "We have a denser agenda to address... rather than being endlessly fascinated by the gossip about the personnel changes in the two major clubs of First University like some third-rate extracurricular group."
"Or to put it another way, does anyone here have anything to do with this topic?"
As she spoke, her gaze piercingly swept to her left and right, as if she had seen through everyone’s thoughts: "The purpose of the Seven Sins includes mutual assistance and the cleansing of sins within the school... but it does not encompass ’maneuvering’ or ’pledging allegiance’ or ’placing bets.’ I wonder if Lord Kannai agrees with my view."
The other six around the meeting table promptly shut their mouths.
Lord Kannai, touching his smooth chin, laughed dryly, "Very wise, very wise."
Friedman’s mouth twitched, not having anticipated that just by slightly mentioning this topic, it would provoke so many accusations, only able to hoarsely defend himself with, "No one wants to pledge allegiance or place bets. It was merely casual conversation."
After the meeting ended and before he finally left, Friedman still had that topic on his mind.
"Although I very much agree with Miss Leviathan’s earlier point, I still wish to hear your thoughts on the title change between Lei Zhe and Augustus," he said to Lord Kannai, who was still present, trying a different approach to his question:
"Do you think the candidates currently presented by the two clubs are qualified?"
Unfortunately, Lord Kannai didn’t make his stance clear on this critical issue involving student leadership, vaguely commenting that both the trio from Sacred Will and the duo from Blood Comrades were very fine young men.
In the end, he smoothly added, "Qualified or not, that is a matter for the Blood Comrades and Sacred Will... more specifically, it’s something the current ’Lei Zhe’ and ’Augustus’ need to worry about. It has nothing to do with the Seven Sins."
And so, Friedman arrived at the meeting with one concern and left with even more.
It was a truly terrible feeling.
As he passed by Lakeside of Bell Lake during peak time after classes, mostly standing out amongst the red robes from Jiuyou Academy, he felt quite conspicuous.
Originally, as a renowned student from Alpha Academy, Friedman had braced himself for the inevitable difficulties from the students of Jiuyou Academy.
But most students by the lake weren’t paying him any attention; instead, they were focused on a red robe at the end of the lakeside.
Squinting, Friedman studied for a while before realizing that the red robe was Nicholas, whom he had seen before the meeting.
"What bad luck," the proud member of the Blood Race slightly lifted his chin, attempting to weave through the crowd.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a veteran student from Jiuyou Academy who lacked composure from the classroom, looking somewhat flustered. Several black ravens were flapping their wings, circling overhead.
It seemed that the number of students was increasing.
The ravens then simultaneously folded their wings and descended onto a tall sweetgum tree not far from Nicholas. Four or five ravens lined up and in their harsh voices, began singing an odd chorus:
"...Nicholas, who loves to talk big,"
"Nicholas, who never passes an exam,"
"Nicholas, who styles his hair like a woman,"
"The disgrace of the Academy! Nicholas!"
The students around burst into roaring laughter, and Nicholas’s face turned visibly redder, so much so that it was almost purple.
The fishmen in the lake naturally wouldn’t miss out on such excitement, and groups of them surfaced, revealing half of their heads to watch the commotion on the shore, emitting piercing, sharp laughter. A few veteran groundsmen had to keep an eye on the fishmen poking out of the water and maintain order, cautious of anyone falling into the lake. All the while, they waved long wooden staves, with the help of a few first-year students in red robes, cursing and expelling the noisy birds in the ginkgo trees, exhausted by the effort.
Such a world lacking order, thought a Blood Race member from Alpha Fortress as they walked past, without stopping, the first-year students in red robes.
"Brother Qing, where’s your charm gun? Knock those stinking birds down!" A warlock with a flushed face shouted from behind him, making Friedman’s frown deepen even further.
...
...
Zheng Qing felt the white-robed Alpha Academy student who had just passed by looked somewhat familiar, but in the noise of the cawing ravens atop the tree, which seemed to mix with some kind of devilish chant, he felt annoyed and found it difficult to concentrate, especially since he and the other members of the Absolution Hunting Team were right in the face of those ravens.
"The school confiscated the charm gun a while ago!" Zheng Qing retorted irritably to Zhang Ji Xin’s yelling, "Instead of worrying about the charm gun, it might be more reliable to borrow a couple of wooden staves from the old groundsmen and whack them."
"Those birds are too crafty; the wooden staves might not hit them," said Xin Fat Man, shaking his head, doubting Zheng Qing’s plans.
The young subsidized student let out a deep sigh and looked around.
They had just walked out of the classroom building after a magic potion class when four or five large ravens flew in from nowhere, squawking and pooping around Nicholas. The other Jiuyou Academy students only watched and laughed, showing no intention of helping Nicholas out of his predicament.
Liu Fei Fei was, indeed, trying to protect Nicholas, but a witch, a first-year chief student at Jiuyou Academy, hopping around trying to shoo the ravens, just wasn’t cutting it.
So, as another subsidized student in the class, Zheng Qing took it upon himself to deal with the trouble, calling a few comrades from the Absolution Hunting Team to drive away the noisy creatures above.
"Go get a couple of cats," Xiao Xiao seemed to recall something and tugged at Zheng Qing’s robe, "Those birds are right up in the tree, perfect for a cat to catch... Isn’t the cat fruit tree not far behind the bushes over there?"
Zheng Qing’s eyes lit up, and he took off towards the cat fruit tree.
But he slowed to a stop not far away.
For he saw Jiang Yu holding a large ragdoll cat, hurrying over. At her feet followed two large cats, one third-ranked Norwegian Forest Cat from the cat fruit tree, and the fourth-ranked Blue Cat.
Li Meng followed her, pinching the tail of the ragdoll cat, shouting all the way.
Upon seeing the figure of the warlock, Jiang Yu’s face inexplicably reddened, but she just pursed her lips, without greeting him, and just pointed to the crows perched on a ginkgo tree. She then commanded the three cats, "Go on, chase them away!"
The three cats cheerily scampered up the tree, passing by the warlock, with the ragdoll cat curiously sniffing the air.
Soon after, the tree branches echoed with the crows’ screeches, as a few withered black feathers fell to the ground.
