Chapter 1042: Chapter 104 Complaints about the Brain
Thanks to Professor Montreya’s urgent request, a therapist from the school infirmary arrived quickly in the laboratory to provide further diagnosis and treatment for Zheng Qing. The therapist Zheng Qing also recognized, as it was the same long-faced horse doctor who had conducted several medical examinations on him before.
For this reason, upon seeing Zheng Qing for the first time, Doctor Ma’s already long face stretched even longer.
"When you notified us, you should have informed us of the patient’s basic identity," Doctor Ma complained to Professor Montreya familiarly, "If I had known it was young Zheng’s issue, I would have at least changed into a cleaner robe before coming... Perhaps before changing into a new robe, I would have first had a cup of hot coffee to perk up."
There were still some stains on the white robe Doctor Ma was wearing, which suggested he had just come from the operating room and had not had the chance to change before he hurried over.
However, while his remarks seemed irresponsible, his work was in no way discounted, as he conducted a thorough examination of Zheng Qing following strict inspection procedures.
Listening to the therapist’s complaints, Professor Montreya slightly raised his eyebrows.
"You’ve helped him with examinations before?" he asked, standing with his arms crossed as he watched the practiced interaction between Doctor Ma and Zheng Qing, his tone slightly curious.
"How fresh!" Doctor Ma elongated his tone, snorting, "From the time he enrolled last semester to now, this kid has stayed at the school infirmary almost every month, and every week he comes with a note from some professor asking me to perform a full body exam on him... And eight times out of ten, it’s either a headache or red eyes. Frankly, even at Starry Sky Academy, most students don’t have such frequent hospital records."
Zheng Qing felt a bit embarrassed as he listened to Doctor Ma’s words.
"I’ve only been hospitalized four or five times, I think... It’s not every month," he defended softly, though not very confidently.
Doctor Ma gave the young state-supported student a sidelong glance, which immediately shut him up.
"This is what I was warning you about before," Professor Montreya said, looking down at Zheng Qing, "Fragile glass shatters easily and there’s very little we—Doctor Ma included—can do except apply some glue to the broken glass to extend its lifespan. The real solution has to come from you."
When Doctor Ma heard the professor’s enigmatic statement, he looked puzzled at the two of them but said nothing. His hands kept busy with the tasks at hand, operating with orderly precision.
The physical examination ended soon after.
As expected, Zheng Qing was very healthy, except for a bit of bruising at the back of his eyes and a slight lethargy—although even that bruise had quickly dispersed after Professor Montreya had intervened.
"Very good," said the therapist, after administering some green potion into Zheng Qing’s eyes, and began packing up his tools, "I will prescribe you a pack of coffee for a pick-me-up later... Of course, if you could sleep soundly, that would be even better."
The eye potion that Doctor Ma administered differed remarkably in effect from the green light Professor Montreya had previously funneled into Zheng Qing’s eyes. If what the Professor had done was akin to a warm spa for Zheng Qing’s eyes, then Doctor Ma’s treatment was more like giving Zheng Qing’s eyes a cold shower.
It was like drinking a big gulp of iced Green Bee, stimulating and awakening.
"Got it," Zheng Qing mumbled in acknowledgement, blinking hard as tears surged forth, quickly blurring his vision.
"If it’s the same issue with the eyes next time, don’t contact the school infirmary first."
Having examined Zheng Qing many times before, Doctor Ma packed away his tools and stood up, admonishing earnestly, "If you really feel there’s something wrong with your body, you can visit a therapy center of the Mage Alliance, or let Old Yao arrange for you to go somewhere else... If you come to me, I can only give you a few pieces of chocolate, or some mint candy... At most, I’ll administer some eye drops."
Zheng Qing looked at him with a worried frown, his vision still somewhat blurry.
Although Doctor Ma’s words sounded somewhat irresponsible, they were quite insightful and pertinent. Throughout his several physical examinations at the school hospital, he had hardly received any effective answers.
However, compared to what Doctor Ma said, the warning from Professor Montreya made the young cost student even more anxious.
He clearly remembered that the initial appearance of congestion in his eyes was in the right one. It later slowly spread to both eyes. And then today, it was the right eye that was problematic again.
Even with his rudimentary common sense, he could tell that the issue with his right eye might be more serious. And that was one of the ultimate reasons he came to this laboratory.
As for the ’inner strength of the heart’ that Professor Montreya mentioned, since it was too mystical, Zheng Qing wasn’t in the mood to pay attention to it for the time being. At most, he would flip through some textbooks in the library or find time to chat with Old Yao. With the experience Mr. Wu had given him during the winter hunt, where he traversed time and space, Zheng Qing felt he could now remain calm in the face of any abnormal situation.
Doctor Ma arrived in a rush and left just as swiftly.
Soon, Zheng Qing was sitting back behind the experiment table. It was only then that he remembered the transcribed rune rubbing he had been clutching in his hand. When he looked down, it was already crumpled with many creases.
"Have you finished copying?" The professor also noticed the material in his hand.
Zheng Qing quietly smoothed out the creases on the notebook and, with a dry laugh, handed it over to Professor Montreya.
The professor slightly furrowed his brow, took Zheng Qing’s ’homework,’ and began to inspect it carefully.
Suddenly, his frown relaxed.
"Very good," Professor Montreya’s face showed a rare expression that was not so stern, and his tone warmed considerably. But then, his brow furrowed again, "...so, it’s even worse."
Zheng Qing stood up in surprise, leaning in to see where he might have made a mistake.
"No, it’s not because of it," the professor put away Zheng Qing’s assignment and shook his head, "These runes, you’ve replicated them perfectly, with almost no mistakes. But that’s exactly the problem."
"At your current level, no wizard could achieve such a feat."
"It means you’re using power that doesn’t belong to you... and this is probably why you’re suffering from headaches or congestion at the bottom of your eyes. If I were you, I would try my best to restrain myself from using this kind of power."
Zheng Qing couldn’t agree with this reasoning.
"I’ve been practicing those basic runes for many years, and they are ingrained in my mind, how can they not belong to me?" he murmured in defense.
Professor Montreya looked at him, his words filled with profound meaning, "That’s one of the most fascinating aspects of magic. Things that lack brains, have real thoughts; things that seem to have brains, often have none; and in your own mind, there are often many things that do not belong to you."
