Chapter 985: 965. Digestion
As for how to break the ice... Song Tan suddenly changed the tone of the conversation and pointed to a lush green hillside ahead:
"Want some radish?"
Yu Yan blurted out, "Sure!"
But Song Tan glanced at her regretfully, "Nope, you all came here to work off some food. You can’t eat anymore."
Still, after saying that, she squatted down and reached out to pull up a radish.
The green radish was quite sizable, weighing about two or three pounds. Song Tan grabbed it and, with a crisp "crack," twisted off its leafy top. She then softly called out:
"Which Baobao is here today?"
Before her words had even finished, a low bark echoed from the bottom of the hill, as if responding to her.
Then, a sleek Mastiff came rushing over, leaping and bounding like a cheetah chasing prey on the savanna!
"Sibao!"
Song Tan responded with a grin, then waited for it to approach before handing over the radish leaves in her hand:
"Here, it’s for you—have at it."
The group standing nearby was entirely captivated by Sibao’s graceful, gentle yet composed demeanor.
Even the normally silent driver, Brother Li, couldn’t help but exclaim, "This dog is raised so well!"
As he spoke, Sibao raised its head and carefully scanned all the faces in front of it, seemingly making an effort to memorize each one.
The cameraman chuckled, "Look how serious it looks—like it’s really going to remember our faces. Aren’t dogs supposed to be super good at smelling?"
This was a question even Song Tan couldn’t answer. In truth, she thought her "Baobaos" at home were quite smart in general, whether it was about their noses or eyes; she wasn’t sure.
At that moment, she crouched by a water channel, using the running water to wash the dirt off the radish while casually adding:
"Don’t underestimate it—it’s got an amazing memory. My vegetable patch and orchard were initially watched over by a couple of hardworking dogs like this."
As she spoke, she shook the water off the radish, then "crunch"—took a bite of the radish head.
Meanwhile, Sibao was already crunching away at the fresh radish leaves. Who knew what raw radish tasted like? The dog’s half-closed eyes and the juice splattering as it ate made its satisfaction obvious.
Look at that! Who here could resist such temptation?
In the next instant, it suddenly tilted its head to the side, grabbing the radish head Song Tan had tossed aside with one swift move. Then "crunch crunch," it chewed happily!
The group: ...
It’s genuinely mouthwatering—why is it teasing us like this?
All across the hills were edible radishes and cabbages. The group listened to the sound of Song Tan crunching on her radish while occasionally watching Sibao munching on discarded radish peels nearby...
In the end, they angrily decided to march over to the factory!
Surely there wouldn’t be food over there too, right? It’s winter after all—rumor has it there aren’t any workers around now.
To mask her craving, Yu Yan forced herself to adopt an interview tone:
"So your factory is idle most of the time in winter. Do you feel that’s a waste? Have you considered expanding into other projects?"
"Not at all," Song Tan replied confidently:
"Farmers are busy year-round. Come winter, everyone deserves a break—to rest, recuperate, and recharge. That’s the true path to health! With this great landscape, clean water, and fresh air, isn’t living a long life the ultimate goal?"
Yu Yan: ...
That reasoning sounds flawless, but aren’t you making it sound a bit too matter-of-fact?
She quickly took a few steps closer to the factory gates. Watching Song Tan as she skillfully reached out to rub the heads of two big yellow dogs by the entrance, Yu Yan couldn’t help but ask again: "Were these mutts chosen as special breeds too?"
Their thick fur and sturdy frames were impressive, and earlier, they’d been smartly slipping through the door—they seemed quite clever.
"Special breeds?" Song Tan replied nonchalantly, "Just ones other people didn’t want that we picked up."
After answering, she patted both goofy dogs affectionately:
"Good boys. The factory’s empty now, so feel free to play outside during the day. Isn’t the riverside beach fun?"
These carefree mutts had grown up with an easy life. Compared to the other dogs, they clearly had a lazier attitude. After nudging Song Tan’s hand and wagging their tails skillfully, they twisted their bodies and slid back through the side entrance to the factory’s kitchen.
Song Tan followed them in, only to find the two flopped near the stove, basking in the warmth of the roaring fire. They clearly had it made!
Song Tan chuckled and scolded, "Why do I even bother worrying about you two?"
Yu Yan, meanwhile, took a deep breath again and marveled, salivating, "It smells amazing."
She instantly regretted the words—she didn’t want to seem so gluttonous!
Song Tan paused, noticing how the cameraman’s lens was almost aimed into a large stainless-steel basin at the side when suddenly someone called out, "Don’t mess with my radishes!"
It was none other than Master Jiang and his wife, Du Mei.
Noticing the cameraman sheepishly retract his lens, then glancing at Song Tan, Master Jiang curiously asked, "Why are you up here in the mountains? Isn’t it chilly? Come warm up by the stove."
But Song Tan asked back in curiosity:
"Are these the dried radishes you’re making?"
Previously, Master Jiang specifically approached her to purchase 100 pounds of radishes. He’d even paid for some chili peppers and spices himself, asking if he could borrow the fire from the mountain to make dried radishes to send to his kids and relatives.
Honestly, that’s one dedicated chef.
So Song Tan agreed and even generously provided him with a big bundle of dried chili peppers from home.
These peppers weren’t overly spicy but were incredibly fragrant, which delighted Master Jiang to no end.
The couple had been eating and sleeping well here. Du Mei had only been around for a few days and already seemed visibly healthier. It was this family concern for their daughter—studying far from home—that had sparked their idea to make dried radishes as a gift.
Their daughter would be on winter break soon after her New Year’s exams. Plus, the year’s end was approaching. Master Jiang decided to make spicy dried radishes to share with family and friends!
"The process is simple—cut the radishes into strips, sprinkle salt to draw out the moisture, and then air-dry them for a few days. Once they’ve developed that chewy texture, wash and dry them again, then mix them with chili powder, Sichuan pepper, sugar, sesame seeds, soy sauce, and vinegar—that’s it..."
As he explained, the group nearby started to gulp down their saliva—how embarrassing. They were all grown adults—couldn’t they show a bit of restraint?
Still grinning, Master Jiang asked Song Tan, "These pair perfectly with porridge, rolled pancakes, or just plain white rice. I plan to send them out this afternoon. I’m just about to add some red chili oil and sesame oil—want a taste?"
Song Tan was tempted.
After all, there were so many fresh radishes at home lately that Seventh Uncle hadn’t even had a chance to make his batch of dried radishes yet. She simply asked:
"Got any leftover rice? I’d like to make a rice ball."
"Of course!"
The workers needed to eat after their chores, so leftover rice was a given. Master Jiang happily obliged:
"Hold on—I’ll toast the leftover rice in the pot first to give it a nice crispy crust. Then I’ll make the rice ball—it’ll taste even better."
Turning to the group by her side:
"Do you all want some too?"
