Chapter 982: 962. Pancake
When it came to breakfast, nobody hesitated. After all, it was early morning, and no one had filled their stomach yet.
Besides, they needed to shoot some footage for the video featuring steaming hot farmhouse meals anyway.
With that, everyone swarmed into the kitchen with their gear, reflectors, and other equipment in tow.
The first dish filmed was shredded radish salad!
The room was warm and cozy, with a hint of stuffiness, making the salad look refreshingly appetizing instead of cold. The emerald green shredded radish was uniform in size and neatly cut. Tossed with hot oil and chili, the mix of green and red was vibrant and photogenic!
And the sesame oil used—wherever it was purchased from—it smelled absolutely incredible!
Yu Yan swallowed hard, feeling ravenous instantly. But it wasn’t time to eat yet, so she tried hard to change the subject:
"Master Song, did you cut these radish shreds? Your knife skills are amazing! A true chef hidden among us civilians!"
"Nope!" Qiaoqiao’s head popped out from behind Zhang Yanping. "I shredded them with a grater."
He looked sympathetic: "You haven’t used one before?"
They’re so useful! There’s one for slicing, one for shredding, one for dicing... and it’s only five yuan for each!
These days aren’t like the old days. Seventh Uncle taught Qiaoqiao the fundamentals, and once the techniques are mastered, using tools for everyday prep isn’t such a big deal.
"I’ve used one..." muttered the cameraman, though he felt the grater seemed oddly mismatched with the rustic farmhouse setup.
But then, he glanced again and noticed a gas canister and range hood on the other side of the large kitchen!
Everyone swallowed hard again, redirecting the lens and lighting toward the nearby large pot.
Seventh Uncle uncovered the pot, and a plume of white steam billowed out, revealing chunks of golden, soft roasted sweet potato amidst well-separated grains of rice...
The sweetness of the sweet potato mingled with the aroma of rice, and with the large ladle stirring the porridge inside the pot, it wasn’t just the food that was stirred—it was also the hearts and stomachs of the workers!
On a chilly winter morning, who could resist the temptation of a bowl of steaming, fragrant porridge?
The new assistant’s eyes were glued to the pot, and she couldn’t tear them away. Yu Yan nearly blurted something inappropriate but steadied her resolve and commanded the cameraman with determination: "Focus the lens on that shiny big pot over there!"
And this pot smelled even better!
Inside the gleaming iron pot, thin pancakes sizzled and soaked up oil! The aroma of scallions, oil, and eggs fused into one, leaving no one’s stomach undisrupted. The chorus of growls was almost deafening!
Seventh Uncle started feeling a bit smug. As the camera zoomed in, he flipped the pancakes with a spatula while explaining:
"I intentionally rolled these pancakes thin. The filling of vermicelli, scallions, leek, and egg is blended directly into the dough, then pan-fried in oil to perfection..."
With a mischievous glint, he asked, "Want to take a bite? I added scallion oil—none of you are avoiding scallions, right?"
Yu Yan tightly shut her mouth and shook her head—she always picked out scallions from her noodles and generally avoided highly seasoned foods during work.
But...
But!!!
If she could resist eating now, could she still call herself human?
She stared at the cameraman: "Are you done filming? If you’re done, just pick an angle and park it. Let’s have breakfast!"
The cameraman, using the last shred of self-control, zoomed in and shot close-ups. As the lighting assistant couldn’t resist leaning over, the cameraman abruptly put down his camera and rushed to the stove:
"I’m grabbing a pancake first!"
"Ahhh, the radish salad tastes amazing!!!"
"Ah... It’s hot, so hot! Sweet potatoes are steaming!"
...
Breakfast finished, a group of people slumped on the sofa, utterly uninterested in their work.
When people are full, drowsiness sets in—that’s just biology, not something determination can overcome. Sure, they weren’t working, but at least they weren’t sleeping—that’s got to count as commendable, right?
But it wasn’t over!
After feasting, a cup of warm, fragrant tea was placed in everyone’s hands. After sipping a few times, the tea’s aroma perked everyone up, and they didn’t feel quite as stuffed anymore...
Still, being this full might lead to mistakes at work, so why not shift focus to something else?
For instance—
"Do you guys sell these ingredients?"
"Yeah? Do you sell them? What’s the price?"
Song Tan was thoroughly accustomed to these inquiries—every diner would ask the same questions.
So she smiled warmly and replied, "We don’t sell them anymore. We’ve signed contracts with several suppliers, plus we have an online store, and we can’t even keep up with the orders..."
"If you really want some, later when we head up the mountains for scenic shots, keep an eye out for radishes and cabbages you might like."
The group’s emotions swung wildly, now bursting with excitement—What?! There were radishes and cabbages available!
Recalling the morning’s bowl of shredded radish salad that had been devoured cleanly, Yu Yan was the first to get excited: "I’ll take two..."
She initially wanted to say 20 kilograms but then reconsidered—radishes could be stored! So she immediately changed it to, "I’ll take 100 kilograms!"
Her mother’s home was a ground-floor apartment with a small yard, ideal for burying radishes in sand and keeping them fresh until spring!
After thinking it over, she added, "And another 100 kilograms of cabbage!"
Her mom was an expert at pickling vegetables, and even if the cabbages weren’t finished immediately, they’d last well when pickled.
As for Song Tan’s claim that the products weren’t enough to sell, they had initially been doubtful, but after eating one meal, who could possibly question it?
If the local market carried produce of this quality, she’d line up every single day, job or no job!
Nearby, the cameraman seemed to have thought of something because he suddenly began trembling: "I’ll take the same!"
Seeing Yu Yan, the assistant, and the driver Brother Li’s astonished expressions, he added triumphantly, "My wife and kid haven’t had anything particularly tasty in ages. Twenty yuan for a kilogram of watermelon couldn’t possibly compare to this. I have to bring some home to show them what real food is!"
The quality of this produce was so high that, if not for the interview, they might not have even had the chance to buy it. So naturally, they had to act fast and stock up!
Only driver Brother Li, with a son preparing for marriage and an increasingly thrifty mindset, cautiously asked, "How much per kilogram?"
Song Tan thought for a moment: "It’s fate that brought you here. You’re like family to us, so I won’t mention the supplier price—that would likely be beyond your reach."
"Let’s settle at twenty per kilogram for the radishes and cabbages."
She spoke simply and casually. To Song Tan now, twenty per kilogram was truly a friendly price—after all, did they even notice what price Boss Chang stabilized shipments at daily?
Still, the group collectively sucked in a sharp breath!
In peak winter, radishes and cabbages were selling for fifty cents per kilogram at the local market, and she dared to ask twenty? Was this price even reasonable?! A single radish could cost dozens! That was even more outrageous than watermelon!
And yet, Song Tan seemed to think of something. She glanced over at the cameraman with a sly smile:
"Didn’t you just mention buying watermelon for twenty yuan per kilogram? If that watermelon truly tasted exceptional, it was probably from our farm."
