Chapter 422: 422. Pick up grandma to come home_1 Chapter 422: 422. Pick up grandma to come home_1 Once everything was arranged, Wu Lan turned around, “Dad, the people coming to work will be here soon, but they won’t be able to find the puddle. You need to take them there.”

“Okay,” Song Youde nodded. “It’s by the old mountain, next to the wild pond. I’ll take them.”

Turning her head, Wu Lan added, “Oh, Dad, since the new house is finished, why don’t you and mom just move over here? The central air conditioning is on anyways, and it’s so much more comfortable to sleep at night.”

“No, no,” Song Youde quickly shook his head. “Your mother and I aren’t used to air conditioning. Besides, the hard bed at the old house is comfortable, and it’s not far anyway. What’s there to worry about?”

“In a couple of days, I’m planning to move the straw mats over there too. I don’t want people to come in and make a mess of your new house.”

Wu Lan laughed, “That won’t happen.”

The people who had been asked to help had some sense of decorum. They would certainly want to take a look, but as for intentionally making a mess, that was out of the question. After all, most of the villagers had helped out at each other’s houses by now.

“By the way,” Song Youde asked, “are you planning to host a meal to warm the house when you move in?”

“Nope.”

Wu Lan shook her head. “It’s too busy in the summer. We don’t have time, and cooking for the workers is tiring.”

Song Sancheng was a bit reluctant–how should this be put? With a new house built, if you don’t show it off, it feels like a waste.

Seventh Uncle didn’t feel the fatigue at all.

With the air conditioning on, even cooking didn’t feel that hard. The new kitchen was so bright! The chimney was really efficient at drawing out smoke, and there wasn’t the slightest bit of choking inside the house.

But Wu Lan sensed Song Sancheng’s itching desires and shot him a glare:

“Who has the money for that? We’re not doing it.”

Such a fine house was unique in the village. Guests would have to bring gifts when they come for the feast, and that would lead to a cycle of social obligations. Why bother?

Moreover, things were indeed tense around the house right now.

Song Youde was rather understanding–hosting a big feast would require even hired hands to be busy all day at home. It was exhausting, and peace and quiet were preferable.

What’s more, people tend to harbor a bit of jealousy–envy the laughter of others while lacking their own. Tantan didn’t earn that much yet. If their living standards were only slightly better than others, it was better to keep a low profile to avoid making people jealous and causing unnecessary trouble.

His own dull son, a little too naive for his own good–if it hadn’t been for his marriage to Wu Lan, who knew what his life would be like now?

Thinking it over and seeing his son getting upset, he decided to change the subject:

“By the way, Wu Lan, weren’t you talking about bringing the kids’ grandparents over? How come I haven’t seen you go get them?”

“Now that your house is ready and has air conditioning, they can come over and stay for their health. They haven’t been well-cared for all these years because of the family burdens. You should use this opportunity to properly honor them.”

“Don’t miss this chance.”

Wu Lan had been considering bringing the kids’ grandparents over, and that could be arranged anytime. But it was different coming from Song Youde’s mouth.

So Wu Lan gladly accepted:

“Alright, then I’ll listen to you, Dad. I’ll have Tantan bring them over today.”

Song Youde was also happy–proud descendants of Lao Song’s family!

“Your dad’s having trouble walking, and he can’t just sit around all the time. People start to overthink when they are idle, and that can take a toll on the body–once the grass is dried, I’ll bring a couple of bundles over for them, let them weave a couple of straw mats for themselves. It’s comfortable to sleep on too.”

This idea made a lot of sense, and it was well planned out.

Wu Lan was over the moon.

Although Tantan had persuaded the elderly couple long ago, they would probably just stay for a short visit. The idea of staying for an extended period made them uncomfortable, feeling it was inappropriate to be a burden at their daughter’s home due to old-fashioned thinking.

Now, with the kids’ grandfather’s words, any length of stay would be acceptable!

Plus, giving them a little work to keep their hands busy–work that wasn’t tiring, allowed for conversation, and seemed to help out… they would end up staying even longer!

Song Tan was lying on the balcony upstairs, pondering over the fence and what to plant beside it when she heard the conversation and immediately responded:

“Okay, Mom, I’ll go pick them up in the car in a bit, it just so happens–” She giggled:

“Grandpa, I remember Grandpa was really good at weaving bamboo baskets! I’ll have to weave you a grass mat later, and you can’t pay me too little for it!”

Song Youde’s eyebrows rose, exuding the spirit of a boss:

“Don’t worry, I certainly won’t shortchange your wages.”

Song Tan always had a high efficiency in her actions.

Having said that, she grabbed the car keys right after breakfast and set off.

By the time the car arrived, and they brought the rice inside, she happily said, “Uncle, this is the new rice we harvested this year, I brought some for you to try.”

She then called out loudly, “Grandma, Grandpa! I’m here to take you to our house to stay!”

Grandma was a bit slow to react: “So soon?”

“Not soon at all.” Song Tan smiled, “I told you last time, how long has it been since? The house has been tidied up, just bring a few clothes and you can move in.”

Grandma didn’t refuse and just chuckled: “Okay, then your grandpa and I will stay for a few days.”

“That won’t do.”

Song Tan shook her head: “Grandpa said that my mom has had a hard time at home all these years; now that the house is finally built and comfortable to live in, he insists you stay there for a good few months!”

“Grandpa said that?”

Grandpa, sitting in his wheelchair, turned his head in surprise.

“Yes, it’s true. Grandpa was the one who said it. He even urged me this morning to hurry up and bring you over!”

“Grandma, you guys go ahead and pack your things, I’ll have a chat with Aunt about Brother Wu Lei.”

Yes, Aunt was practically pining for news!

When Aunt saw Song Tan approaching, it took a lot of effort to hold back from asking immediately, to avoid seeming overanxious.

But in reality, who could be at ease?

Song Tan was well-prepared for this, and now she approached with her phone in hand.

“Aunt, let me tell you! Brother Wu Lei has been doing so well at home! He’s truly loyal and dedicated!”

“He said he’d do his best with his girlfriend, and he’s been really trying.”

“It’s not just me talking, Uncle, you can’t always be so discouraging at home. I think he’s actually quite capable. Look–”

She opened her phone, and a video of Wu Lei harvesting rice was displayed:

“Doesn’t he look skilled at it? But he was probably tired on the first day. Qiaoqiao said he slept so soundly that night, he didn’t stay up late on his phone, and fell asleep before 10 PM.”

“Oh my, now that’s a proper routine!”

Aunt might be worried, but the corners of her eyes and eyebrows showed satisfaction!

“That’s how it should be. When he’s at home, he stays up all night playing games and shouting; I worry his health will decline if it goes on like that.”

Right?

Song Tan then flipped through the photo album: “Look, here’s Brother Wu Lei picking watermelons on the mountain–huge ones, too. I brought two in the car, prepared by him; I just forgot to bring them down.”
