Chapter 345 - Chapter 345 345. Luxury Melon_1
Chapter 345: 345. Luxury Melon_1 Chapter 345: 345. Luxury Melon_1 A moment later, Chen Yunyun touched her belly, her eyes darting around, not daring to look at the remaining half of the watermelon.
Her mom sat upright on the small stool in the kitchen, picking vegetables with a straight back as if sitting before not a trash can but a high-end mahogany table in a meeting room.
The atmosphere became momentarily stagnant.
After a while, it was Chen Yunyun who couldn’t keep her cool any longer, “Mom, that half won’t be fresh if we leave it, how about we eat it now, and we can open another one when dad comes back?”
“Sure,” her mom quickly nodded, “You’re right.”
She then picked up the watermelon to wash it, and with a swift motion of her knife, cut it cleanly.
Soon, the kitchen was filled with the “crunch” of watermelon eating.
In the living room, the old lady tiptoed over, pressing her ear against the kitchen door, feeling her saliva dripping at her age.
Yet she really didn’t dare to speak up, and when she heard some noise inside, she quickly tiptoed back to her room.
But after listening attentively in her room for a while, and not hearing any sounds of someone leaving the kitchen, the old lady felt a stirring in her heart…
On the other side, feeling quite full, Chen Yunyun licked her lips and couldn’t help burping, “Mom, I’m full. But my mouth still craves more…”
“You mustn’t overeat…”
Her mom looked blankly, staring at the garbage bin with watermelon rinds, and suddenly hesitated,
“We shouldn’t have thrown out those rinds, we could have picked them up, peeled them, and made a dish…”
Imagining the taste of the watermelon rind, Chen Yunyun involuntarily smacked her lips, then said troubledly, “It’s true, we can’t waste! How about this, Mom, let’s cut another one. We can eat a bit more and save the rinds in a bowl.”
“When dad comes back in the middle of the night, he’ll just eat the remaining half and will definitely put the rinds in a bowl as well.”
“Or…”
Mother and daughter looked at each other, and said in unison, “Let’s cut half more!”
This time, we’ll only cut a small half!
…
At last, Chen Yunyun, holding her belly, went to the living room and kept wandering around the house all night, making the old lady feel anxious and short of breath, wishing she could lock her silly granddaughter in her room.
Finally, at midnight, after several trips to the toilet, Chen Yunyun finally settled down and went back to her room. Through the door, one could still hear her playing video games and howling like a banshee.
The old lady sat up in bed, her movements particularly agile. She didn’t bother to turn on the lights, but groped her way to the kitchen in the dark.
Then, turning on the flashlight on her phone, she managed to grab the remaining half of the watermelon from the fridge, guided by that faint light.
She thought to herself, despite having diabetes, she had already taken two sugar-lowering pills earlier, so eating just a couple of bites now – just two – wouldn’t be too excessive, right?
Determined, she didn’t even bother to cut the watermelon; she decided to just hold it and eat with a spoon.
It would leave a pit, but if her son came back and saw it, that would be fine. After all, Yunyun liked to eat it that way too.
With this thought, she felt completely at ease.
…
It wasn’t much later, when suddenly, the door of the room went “click”.
But with the kitchen door closed, and the old lady blissfully indulging with her eyes shut, she heard nothing.
Chen’s dad was home.
The house was pitch-dark; his wife was surely asleep by this hour, but Yunyun definitely wasn’t, as he could still hear noises…
He turned on the light, set his phone down, and prepared to take a quick shower. However, he paused in his steps as if he heard some noise coming from the kitchen!
In the dead of night, the kitchen was dark except for a faint glint of light…
He grew alert–might there be a thief in the house?!
Chen’s dad’s heart skipped a beat. Without alerting his family, he grabbed a dining chair as a shield and tiptoed toward the kitchen door handle.
Next!
As the door opened, he clicked the light on–
“Ouch!”
“Smack!”
A familiar voice rang out, and Dad Chen was startled. He quickly peered in and saw a little old lady crouching, her round body strikingly familiar.
She was squatting on the ground, picking up the remaining watermelon rinds with a pained expression that made one feel heartbroken and sorry for her.
Dad Chen immediately became anxious, “Mom, if you’re going to eat watermelon, why would you–”
“Oh.” Halfway through his sentence, he had a realization, his expression turning cold again:
“Your blood sugar was so frighteningly high at last week’s check-up, how can you still dare to eat watermelon?!”
The old lady defiantly lifted her head: “I took sugar-lowering medication!”
Then looking at the watermelon on the floor, her face filled with regret: “I haven’t finished eating this…”
It wasn’t until then that Dad Chen managed to turn his attention to the smashed watermelon on the floor–what hadn’t she finished eating?
The watermelon was split in two, looking like half an empty shell. There wasn’t much of the red flesh left!
He remembered something then, inhaling sharply at that moment: “You ate this much?!”
But his mother was off-topic: “I didn’t even scrape the flesh off these rinds cleanly…”
…
With all this commotion, Chen Yunyun, who was playing games in her room, also noticed the noise. Glancing outside, she noticed her dad’s shoes and bag at the doorstep.
And then looking at the kitchen–
“Well, well! Grandma, you actually dared to sneak eat watermelon behind our backs!”
“What do you mean sneak eat? What do you mean sneak eat?”
Faced with her granddaughter, the old lady got tough: “I took medication! Besides, how can eating watermelon be considered sneaking?”
“But you have diabetes–” Before she finished her sentence, Yunyun also started yelling at the smashed watermelon rinds on the floor: “Why waste it like this? There’s still so much left!”
Dad Chen: …What? After just one day without seeing you, Yunyun, who used to eat watermelon with pits in it, is now a frugality expert?
How are you supposed to eat this now? Chew through the rind?
Totally unnecessary!
Yet the old lady also looked distressed: “Exactly, I was enjoying it until your dad scared me! Look, he even moved this big stool. If he hadn’t turned on the light, it could have fallen right onto this old lady’s head.”
Dad Chen was also aggrieved: “I heard noises in the kitchen; I didn’t turn on the light either, I thought it was a thief…”
“What kind of thief would steal a worthless watermelon!”
The old lady was stubborn.
But suddenly Yunyun remembered: “Ah, not that it’s worthless, this watermelon cost 20 yuan per kilo.”
Dad Chen: …
Grandma Chen: …
Mother and son turned to stare at her simultaneously: “Yunyun, are you indulging in luxury now!”
Yunyun: …I buy watermelon with good intentions, you don’t reimburse me, and now you say I’m indulging in luxury?
So she sighed: “It’s not about indulging in luxury, it’s that you don’t appreciate things. The watermelon tasted so good today, my mom even said she’d use the rind for cooking. Now it’s all smashed to pieces, and we can’t salvage it. We only bought four, meant to leave half for you, and now, well, only two are left…”
The old lady also had a regretful face: “Exactly! All thanks to your dad.”
Dad Chen: …
Fine, so it’s all my fault, right?!
He huffed and moved the chair aside, then grabbed a watermelon, rinsed it under the tap, and with one chop, sliced it in half!
