Chapter 294 - Chapter 294 294. Treasure in the Nest_1
Chapter 294: 294. Treasure in the Nest_1 Chapter 294: 294. Treasure in the Nest_1 Song Tan sometimes felt that the bit of Spiritual Energy she provided to Big White might have been too much for his size, as he’d grown taller and stronger over the past few months.
Now standing there, giving two loud honks, flapping his small wings, even the big black dog from other households in the village would tuck its tail and step aside when they saw him.
With his large frame now in the chicken coop, the gang of small chickens, with disheveled feathers looking up at him, seemed especially frail and pitiful.
As he stood there with his wings splayed out, the fierce look in his beady eyes startled Qiaoqiao for a moment.
Then she asked, “Big White, what are you doing?”
Hearing her approach, Big White honked, and then, flapping his wings, he dove headfirst into Qiaoqiao’s arms wearing his little yellow hat.
A rough goose honk came from his throat, a strong man shedding tears, as if he’d suffered some tremendous injustice.
Just as Qiaoqiao was about to pat him and soothe him, Big White seemed to muster his courage and once again charged back into the chicken coop with a flurry of wing flapping!
This chicken coop was a neat red-brick house built by Song Youde and his father at the start of the spring; it served as a warm place for the night, while for feeding and drinking, there was a sunshade set up outside.
The chickens roamed through the mountains around, and with high fences all around, and Dabao and Big White watching over, there was no fear of weasels or people coming to steal.
They ate a lot each day, excreted a lot, and ran around a lot, so much so that Song Tan had imagined numerous times how they would taste stewed in a pot.
Now, with all the chickens standing outside under the shed, the nest inside the coop looked dark. Qiaoqiao was just about to peek inside when Big White rushed in with a honk, stretching his neck and charging straight in.
Although the entrance to the chicken nest was made quite small for easy catching, it snagged his chubby backside for a moment.
But it didn’t prevent Big White from squeezing in successfully.
There was a strange mix of cooing and honking from inside, and before long, Big White emerged, fiercely clamping onto a fluffy neck and stubbornly dragging something out!
The fellow had a round head with a small pointed beak, a white crown, two white lines like sleeping silkworms under its eyes, and a speckled plumage.
After walking quite some distance, its tail feathers were still dragging inside the chicken coop, not fully revealed…
Qiaoqiao was stunned.
Then she watched as Big White honked and let go, while the little fellow lowered its head, curled into a ball, half its feathers fluffed up, but didn’t dare to move a muscle.
Its long tail feathers dragged on the ground, looking particularly pitiful and strangely familiar.
She was bewildered for a while–
Wasn’t this the pheasant that Sanbao and Sibao cornered in the vegetable garden a few days ago?
What was it doing in the chicken coop?
Qiaoqiao crouched down to take a closer look at the wild pheasant, and it peered back at her. Human and bird gazed at each other, their eyeballs soon converging toward the center.
It wasn’t until Big White delivered a fierce slap with his wing to his “big brother” that Qiaoqiao snapped back to reality, then turned around in confusion:
“I, I’m going to find Sister.”
He didn’t bother feeding the pigs or Dabao and Big White; he dropped the two buckets and scurried back home.
Having moved into Grandpa’s house, it took a little while to bring everyone over. Hearing that a wild pheasant had gone into the chicken coop, almost the whole family eagerly gathered around.
In front of all eyes, the pheasant remained as still as a farmer squatting in the field, not making a move.
Seeing so many people, it let out a “gu” sound, just like it had in the vegetable garden.
It appeared to be desensitized by now, even lowering its head to peck at the ground in front of it, swallowing something down.
Now even Song Tan was at a loss for words–
“Is this the wild pheasant we saw in the vegetable garden?”
“It looks like it,” Wu Lan said with a somber face. “You see the way it’s eating. It’s just like in the vegetable patch.”
From the back, Zhang Yanping asked in a faint voice, “But why would it live in the chicken coop? Huh? Isn’t freedom important?”
Everyone exchanged glances.
Song Tan: …
She had a guess… Could it be that her daily feeding of vegetable leaves, stems, and roots had somehow attracted this wild pheasant?
After all, with several of her treasures looking after the vegetable garden, they could only manage a bite or two, never enough to fill their bellies.
Whereas by moving to the henhouse, it simply had to mingle with the hens for free food and drink every day. While the quality might not be as good as in the vegetable garden, it made up for it in quantity!
In the past few days, it seemed its head had grown even rounder!
But the problem was, as beautiful as the long-tailed pheasant was, whether it could spread its long feathers inside the henhouse was one thing; whether it was affecting the other chickens was another, more important issue!
Yet if she chased it away again, since the mountain wasn’t entirely enclosed with nets, and the pheasant could fly and flutter, wouldn’t it just casually come back for a visit?
Song Tan painfully took out her phone:
“I’m going to report this to the assistant secretary.”
She snapped a photo of the excessively well-behaved wild pheasant before contacting the other party directly.
It wasn’t long before the Village Secretary’s voice message came through, “Don’t do anything rash, do not harm the wild pheasant, it’s a protected animal. If you can, release it!”
If she could release it, why would she even need to report it?
Long-tailed pheasants weren’t that common, but they weren’t unheard of, either!
Song Tan explained the situation, and the Village Secretary didn’t reply for quite some time.
Finally, a message came through–
“Wait, I’m coming over right now.”
There was some distance between the Village Department and her location, so Song Tan thought she would have to wait for a while, but to her surprise, the assistant secretary drove straight over.
When she looked towards the back mountain, she was also startled:
“Are you sure this isn’t something you guys caught and brought back?”
“Why would I catch it?” Song Tan was also helpless, “What’s the use of it looking pretty if I can’t eat it or raise it? But now it’s settled in my chicken coop, and with so many people watching, it doesn’t leave. Honestly, last time in the vegetable garden when it was stealing the leaves, it was already pinned down by two dogs, and today it’s back in the henhouse. It’s clearly trying to settle down!”
“Hold on,” Zu Jun interrupted her, “You mean your dogs caught a long-tailed pheasant out in the fields? You need to train them better!”
Song Tan looked back, innocent, “How should I train them?”
Uh-oh.
The assistant secretary was at a loss as well.
After a pause, she asked, “How do you know it’s the same one from the field?”
Could there be two?
Song Tan wasn’t sure at first.
But upon closer inspection, there was one particularly conspicuous white feather sticking out from the back of its head. That was enough confirmation for her.
Quite the character!
Zu Jun was also feeling a headache, “Try moving it outside the net…”
Song Tan stepped forward, grabbed the wild pheasant by the neck, and flung it out of the enclosure. Zu Jun watched nervously:
“Be careful! Have some respect for Guoyi!!!”
However, as soon as the words were spoken, the long-tailed pheasant thrown into the air flapped its wings and cooed twice before fluttering back into the henhouse.
It didn’t even bother lying down this time but instead strutted over to the trough to take a few sips of water before calmly settling down again.
