Chapter 1040: 1020. Sibao Reward

Pulling radishes really isn’t hard, but the key is that everyone can only pull one. The old men exchanged glances; their faces looked calm and collected, but their brains were waging an all-out war.

So they looked left, looked right, straining like a bunch of ostriches craning their necks in the vegetable field, yet after ages of searching, they still couldn’t find the biggest one.

Secretary Xiaozu smirked and muttered, "Isn’t this just like a bear picking corn? Always thinking the better ones are up ahead."

"Come on, hurry up." She urged, "Pull ’em now, and in an hour or so, we’ll just have time for dinner... That sauce I mailed you guys earlier, doesn’t it go great with rice?"

Slurp!

At the mention of this, everyone’s mouths started watering instantly. At that moment, Lao Zhu bent over and reached out like a jackrabbit in motion:

"Whoosh!"

With one swift motion, he yanked out a radish.

Sibao bolted over silently, staring intently with a piercing gaze.

Lao Zhu couldn’t help but exclaim, "Good dog!"

Secretary Xiaozu was already holding a radish herself. She laughed at the scene, "Alright, thanks for the hard work, Sibao. I’ll wash your radish in just a moment."

With that, she took Lao Zhu’s radish too and squatted by the mountain spring running alongside the ditch, using the flowing water to start washing them thoroughly.

Xiaodu blurted out instinctively, "Raw water might have parasites..."

Only to be cut off by Lao Zhu’s teasing laughter, "Don’t listen to those health-nut doctors with their nonsense! Back when you were training, didn’t you drink whatever water you came across?"

Xiaodu chuckled too and squatted down, "Xiaojun, let me wash the radishes. This water’s freezing."

Zu Jun snapped out of it, "Oh, right, right, I need to take care of my skin."

She quickly stepped aside, pulled out a tissue to wipe her hands, then fished out a tiny bottle of hand lotion from her pocket and started applying it meticulously.

Lao Zhu frowned at the sight, "Back when you were home, you were never this particular."

Secretary Xiaozu thought to herself, What does Grandpa know? Does he not see the difference between smooth white skin and rough dark skin?

As she massaged her hands, Sibao stayed right by her side, watching her intensely with a bright and unblinking gaze, not making a sound. Soon enough, the other nine people also yanked out their radishes and, copying Xiaodu, squatted by the ditch to wash them clean.

No denying it, everything here was natural—even the experience felt natural.

Over the years, as a personal bodyguard, Xiaodu’s keen attentiveness had only sharpened. He pulled out a small knife he carried, slicing off the coarse, dark green top of the radish with a single, steady cut, letting the withered old radish leaves fall to the ground.

Sibao let out a sharp "Woof!" and grabbed the fallen leaves in his mouth, then trotted off to his doghouse. Moments later, he returned dragging out a large stainless steel basin.

Everyone stared. In the basin were the radish tops and wilted leaves Sibao had collected, the vibrant green leaves spilling out over the edges.

Xiaodu froze for a second before blurting, "Should I shred the leaves into pieces for you, then..."

Before he could finish, Sibao was already striding over happily and placing the basin squarely in front of him.

Even Lao Zhu was taken aback, "It actually understands us that well?"

"Of course it does! Sibao guards this mountain—smart as they come! Isn’t that right, Sibao?"

"Woof!" Sibao raised its head, the dusty yellow bowtie around its neck fluttering in the breeze.

Xiaodu silently squatted down, broke the long leaves into sections with a few twists of his hands, and put the pieces neatly back into the basin.

Sure enough, Sibao seemed content, picking up the basin in its mouth and retreating back to its doghouse.

Xiaodu paused, "But there are still so many radishes left to peel."

Secretary Xiaozu grinned from ear to ear, "Brother Xiaodu, you just don’t get it. Our Sibao likes to eat with a sense of propriety. We said we’d give it one radish, and those nine leftover tops? We’re taking them home."

"But what does it need the radish leaves for? It doesn’t even eat them," Grandpa Wang, the only one who hadn’t pulled a radish, asked curiously.

Secretary Xiaozu explained, "It’s not that it doesn’t eat them. It’s just that when we feed it at noon, we mix in some broth or gravy. Pouring that over the leaves makes it way tastier than eating them raw... Sibao’s got great taste, okay?"

The way she said it was so obsequious, but because her tone was directed at a dog, it came off even more ridiculous.

From a distance, Sibao barked again:

"Woof!"

Everyone: ...

And so, on the way down the mountain, Secretary Xiaozu carried a bundle of radish leaves, the trimmed tops dangling underneath.

Meanwhile, the group held knives, peeling off a thin layer of radish skin with swift motions, then biting straight into the plump, juicy radishes.

Secretary Xiaozu sighed about wasting the skins, but the others had already picked up on the difference!

These radishes—how were they this crisp, sweet, and delicious?!

The older folks were mindful of their teeth, nibbling cautiously. But for someone like Xiaodu, young and physically robust, he took enormous bites, the crunching echoes endlessly filling the air!

Each bite released icy-cold, refreshing juice alongside the crisp crunch, making it impossible to stop. The unique taste was indescribable, but if they had to compare, it felt like—

"Biting into a frozen pear on a boiling 40-degree day."

So satisfying! They couldn’t get enough!

And oddly enough, it was said by the only one who hadn’t pulled a radish and now stood empty-handed—

Xiaoli, Wang Grandpa’s bodyguard.

Xiaoli’s hometown saw frost and ice breath every winter, so when he said it was like a frozen pear, you’d believe him. But the problem was, with his large frame and a big radish in hand, he munched it down to the stub before finally tasting a faint spice in the sweetness.

Meanwhile, Grandpa Wang was about to burst from frustration!

No matter how tasty these radishes were, he didn’t have one. Where was his dignity? And why couldn’t this Xiaoli have the sense to pull one for him?!

Glancing around, he spotted another radish patch down the mountainside and took a step forward:

"Grandpa Wang!" Secretary Xiaozu quickly stopped him. "That patch is for red radishes..."

"Red radishes can be eaten raw too!" Grandpa Wang grumbled.

But...

"No way. Sibao already gave us a shot earlier, and you passed it up. If you go into the patch now and start pulling radishes, Sibao will bite you."

"It keeps a tight watch on this mountain."

Xiaoli, slow on the uptake, finally realized and widened his mouth in confusion, pulling the last radish stub out from his mouth and holding it out awkwardly, "Then I..."

"Then what?!" Grandpa Wang snapped, even angrier—you’re offering me a radish tip covered in your drool?!

"Just eat it!"

Xiaoli giggled sheepishly, stuffed the radish back into his mouth, and mumbled, "It really is delicious... Maybe we can buy more before we leave—but Grandpa, you got mad about missing out on radishes today. Remember to check your blood pressure later."

That was just his silly personality, but he followed orders to the letter. Otherwise, his family wouldn’t have specifically assigned him to watch over the headstrong Grandpa Wang.

The group chewed their radishes, stifling their chuckles, while Grandpa Wang felt his face flush hot enough to catch fire—

How? Did he really not get to keep his dignity?!
