Chapter 52: Hanz Knew When He Was Beat
With a long loud groan, Eric gave his final push and little Artie entered the world. All 10lbs. 3oz. of him. Dad was doing great, better than the father.
Lex cleaned and prepped him, then helped the tyke latch onto his first nectar gland, belonging to his dad Eric. The bonding process had begun.
"After you rest and Artie has enjoyed his first meal, I will let you go to your room to rest for 24 hours before you can return to a normal routine since this is your first birth." Lex’s voice carried the authority of experience.
Eric wasn’t pleased. He felt fine and wished to get back to his pre-pregnancy life. So he had just pushed a 10+ lb. baby out of his body—after all, he was a Genman and they were tough.
"Just wait a couple of hours and you will start to retighten in your rear vent, and then the real fun will begin. Plus no sex at all for 6 weeks. And then only with a condom—we don’t want to place your body under any stress after what happened during your first trimester." Lex frowned as he delivered the news.
Eric didn’t agree with Lex, but he was the expert in these matters.
"Okay, I will follow your instructions." The reluctance was clear in his voice.
Lex looked at an exhausted Randy.
"Grandfather, will you get Ty to help Randy to their room? One of the staff will help with Eric and Artie."
"Sure, I will do just that, Lex." He hugged his grandson and patted Lex’s growing belly. His time also soon approached.
Angela, working with R&D, had designed a blocking device which would cover the Z-1 Ranch. Even though all of the trackers had been removed, that way no one could trace the old signals there. Tony was very happy with Agent Angela Torres’s performance in this case. The raids would start soon—every team would be equipped with these jamming devices along with electronic disrupters to hide their radio communications between the agents.
The following morning at 10am, agents swarmed all 45 locations and several off-site locations also. They hit them hard and fast.
Hanz and Angela entered one holding room where the young men were still asleep. Staff members tried to run but they were trapped. Hanz and other agents handcuffed them and placed them on the floor.
Angela went forward to scope out the rest of the complex. She knocked out several staff as she made her way through. She heard the cry of a child and she zeroed in on its location. Angela entered the birthing room—there was blood on the floor and a newborn in a plastic cart wrapped in a blanket. Angela picked up the baby and held it close to quiet it.
Hanz entered the room and saw Angela.
"Stay with the child. I’ll try to find out what happened here." His tone was grim.
Hanz followed the blood droplets down the hallways and around three corners. They led to a double door. He pushed open the double door and there were several gurneys with bodies on them. He saw the last one—blood was still dripping. There was a human worker in the room and he put his arms up.
"Please don’t hurt me. I just want to get him away—he needs to be taken care of. I can’t leave #301 like this. He’s been through too much already." The worker’s voice shook with emotion.
"What do you mean by #301?" Hanz inquired.
"This is #301 in front of me. They no longer give them names because it’s just too much—they give numbers and that was it. I told them that #301 was too young, but they wanted to try. He couldn’t do it, he locked up. The doctors are the ones that removed the child."
Hanz took a deep breath.
"Are the doctors still in the building?"
"Yes, sir. As soon as they heard the commotion, they left, but they can’t get away. I know if you’re at the entrances and exits—they are all blocked inside and hiding in the building."
The worker’s expression grew more urgent.
"But there is one thing I do request, sir. I have four bottles of nectar from 301 that have not been neutralized—they carry his DNA. It is the only way they can be passed to the child. Two bottles at each feeding, four bottles total. It will give him his start in life. He will grow up knowing that his dad did love him even though he never met him."
Hanz escorted the staff member to the delivery room where Angela was holding the crying child. She was very defensive when the staff member showed his face, but his hands were on his head, fingers interlaced. He walked to a panel and opened it—it was a tiny fridge and inside, as he said, were four bottles of nectar. #301’s Genman nectar.
He took two bottles and gave them to Angela.
"Please feed him. He needs to learn who he is and who his dad was."
Angela took the first bottle and the baby drank it right down. The second bottle was a little bit slower as his appetite was being satisfied. The staff member turned to Hanz.
"My job here is done. You can take me with the rest. She should do fine with the baby."
"Let’s wrap this up. We’ll find the staff member, take the child to a nursery so he can be fed. We need to get back to the ranch to make sure everything’s okay." Hanz looked at Angela as he spoke.
"Absolutely not, Hanz. Abraham’s not going anywhere but home with me—he’s mine. I am going to raise him. There is no way those animals are getting anywhere near this child." Angela’s voice was fierce with determination.
"Angela, think what you’re saying. He’s full blood Genman—it’s not a normal human child. He will grow quickly and it will break your heart when he decides to leave after his transition. He comes into his cycle and looks for a mate."
"Hanz, I know exactly what he is. I know what he’s lost, but he will never know a moment’s sadness in my home. I will love him like I gave birth to him. I will let him know everything I know about his dad and how he gave his life so Abraham could live." Angela’s resolve was unshakeable. "You may be bigger than me, but do not challenge me on this. If I have to, I will walk away from the Bureau and raise Abraham. I’m sure that Zach will give us a place to call our own at the ranch."
Hanz put his hands up. He knew when he had lost—he was defeated. He smiled.
"Okay, let’s go get that baby home and introduce him to his two uncles, Frankie and Roger. Who knows? Frankie might even give up a gland for a while to help feed little Abraham."
