Chapter 79: Confined and Cuddly

Sylas knew Rocco well enough to believe that even if he considered betrayal, he wouldn’t be able to deceive them so effectively.

Sylas would notice it right away.

"...Rocco. Rocco, what is the true identity of your dog?"

Sylas asked again, seeing that Rocco still hadn’t responded, his eyes vacant.

The hypnosis didn’t seem to be working well.

After lightly stroking Rocco’s cheek to encourage him, Rocco finally answered.

"──...Laxus. My... important, family."

Sylas looked down at Rocco, who had answered with a hazy, unfocused expression, and sighed at the response.

Was that thing truly a family to Rocco?

It seemed that Rocco didn’t know the truth about it.

Or perhaps... he did know, but had been brainwashed by that man into believing it was part of his family.

"Is Laxus... human?"

Sylas placed his hand on the back of Rocco’s head and pulled him closer.

They locked eyes from such a close distance, holding the crystal in front of him...

Rocco blinked his eyes once and shook his head.

"Laxus... Laxus is a dog... not human."

"...Then, is it a Beastman?"

"No... Laxus is a dog."

Sylas let out a relieved sigh when Rocco’s response matched his previous one.

As he had suspected, Rocco was not an ally of that man.

This crystal was meant to draw out the subject’s true feelings and the truth.

Rocco had insisted that Laxus was not a Beastman but simply a dog.

That was solid proof that Rocco didn’t know the true identity of that thing.

However... at the same time, it was clear that the brainwashing was extremely powerful.

The crystal had the ability to bring out even the most deeply buried, unconscious truths from a person.

The fact that Rocco had still claimed Laxus was not a Beastman, despite the crystal’s influence, meant that the brainwashing was even stronger than Sylas had initially thought.

"...Why did you name that thing Laxus?"

If that was the case, there was no choice but to delve deeper into the heart of the brainwashing.

If Sylas could uncover why Rocco had named that dog Laxus, it might reveal how the brainwashing had taken hold.

How much horrifying manipulation had been inflicted on this fragile, innocent child?

As Sylas tried to suppress his rising anger, he wondered if, once everything was uncovered, he might even consider declaring an all-out war against the Del Fiore family.

Just as these thoughts ran through his mind, Rocco finally parted his lips to speak softly.

Sylas hurriedly leaned in to press his ear to Rocco’s plump, adorable lips, straining to catch every word.

"──...Laxus, Laxus red eyes... looked like... someone I know.... so give it his name"

...The dog’s eyes resembled someone he knew so he gave it that bastard name?

Sylas inhaled sharply at the unexpected words.

That meant...

"Have you seen Laxus Del Fiore?"

With wide eyes, Sylas stammered the question in a trembling voice.

Rocco, upon hearing this, immediately relaxed and smiled, nodding his head slowly in a slow, gentle motion.

"Yes, yes. Laxus Del Fiore, he is very handsome. His red eyes are the most wonderful thing I’ve ever seen."

"...Handsome?"

"Yes, very... wonderful, handsome..."

Rocco repeated the words "handsome" and "wonderful" in a dazed, fluffy tone.

What was this?

Rocco kept repeating how handsome and wonderful Laxus was.

Sylas himself had never been praised so enthusiastically.

That bastard had brainwashed Rocco so thoroughly that he could even make him call that bastard’s cursed red eyes "wonderful."

Sylas’s anger boiled as he realized the extent of the manipulation.

"...I’ll kill him."

Sylas quietly simmered with rage, recalling Rocco’s answers.

He didn’t know exactly when or how the brainwashing had been inflicted, but after this conversation, he had a rough idea of how vile and manipulative that bastard was.

Rocco had never left the annex, or rather, it would be more accurate to say he had never left the grounds of the Di Malvento estate.

Ever since Sylas foolishly and cruelly disregarded Rocco, the annex had been watched over by members of the Di Malvento family.

It was a fact that Rocco had never stepped outside the estate except when he recruited the infamous Georgio the Hyena.

In other words, it was impossible for Rocco to have seen that bastard, Laxus Del Fiore.

This was clear proof that that bastard had approached Rocco, manipulated him, and brainwashed him within the annex, all to accomplish his own goals.

"──I also like Sylus. Laxus and Sylus I love them very much."

Just as Sylas was about to be consumed by the overwhelming hatred and the desire to find that bastard and kill him, Rocco’s sudden muttering made him unintentionally let out an incredulous, "...Huh?"

However, he quickly realized what Rocco had meant and felt his cheeks flushed.

Tears of gratitude almost welled up in his eyes, but he managed to hold them back.

"Ah, Rocco... you are resisting now, aren’t you?"

Rocco was unconsciously trying to resist the brainwashing.

He had said that he loved him, but he also said he liked that bastard.

The ambiguity in his words could only mean one thing.

"I don’t like Laxus! I love Sylas! I love Sylas!"

A vivid image of Rocco, crying as he shouted those words in despair, filled Sylas’s mind.

Despite saying he liked Laxus, Rocco also couldn’t suppress his feelings for him.

That frustrating contradiction was reflected in Rocco’s words now.

"I love you too... Rocco, I love you..."

"I love Laxus. I love Sylas."

"Ah, yes... I understand. You truly love only me, don’t you? Don’t worry, I understand everything. There’s no need to be worried."

Once again, Sylas thought to himself that he needed to break this damn brainwashing as soon as possible.

He held Rocco tightly in his arms to make sure he wouldn’t grow more anxious.

He pressed a soft kiss to Rocco’s forehead, and immediately, Rocco’s round cheeks softened in a gentle smile.

"Laxus, Sylas, I love..."

"...So cute... I love you too."

The enemy he needed to kill was now clear.
