Chapter 75: Tree Troubles
Chapter 75: Tree Troubles
"...Hey, Laxus, I wonder where we are."
The only response he received was a soft, adorable "Wuff"—a sound full of cuteness.
However, it’s not the reliable answer he was hoping for.
Normally, he’d be showering Laxus with affection, calling him cute and petting him, but unfortunately, he didn’t have the energy for that right now.
"Yeah, I see...," he murmured as he adjusted his grip on Laxus, sighing deeply, his shoulders drooping.
He was trying his best to maintain a brave front, but inside, he was crying uncontrollably.
"No, it’s not me who’s lost. But It’s you who are lost, right, Laxus?"
"...Wuff~"
"Hey, what was that pause just now?" Rocco thought, but swallowed his comment and continued to stroke Laxus. "Alright, alright, I know, ’Wuff.’"
"If we could see a building, we’d know which direction to go. But I’m a little shorter than most, so I can’t see anything."
Rocco had no idea how he ended up in this situation.
All he knew was that he was surrounded by tall grass and trees, making it impossible to see anything other than plants.
He had no way to spot any buildings, putting him in a hopeless situation.
He was completely lost, stranded in the wilderness.
Ugh.
"Should I just wait for rescue...? But whether help will come is a 50/50 chance. After all, I just said something rude to my brother who’s always been a suck-up. Even if he knows I’m lost, he might not only refuse to help, but could even try to sabotage any rescue efforts."
The only hope he had was in Ragar and Georgio.
"But... I wonder if they’re okay. They probably care about me, but I can’t really predict what they’d do in a situation like this."
"Well, I guess I’ll just have to figure this out on my own."
Rocco was sure he could handle this.
After all, he was an incredibly cool, villainous second son.
And besides, he was just lost on the family’s property, right?
Something like this shouldn’t even happen, so there had to be a way out.
With that in mind, Rocco spent a few seconds coming up with a brilliant plan.
Ding!
"That’s it! Climb a tree!" he declared, pointing dramatically at the nearest tree to distract himself from the loneliness.
The cute little puppy, Laxus, in his arms looked at him with an expression as if to say, What on earth is this guy talking about?
Rocco gave him a pleading look. "Don’t give me that look, Laxus!"
"It’s literally what I’m going to do, Laxus. I’m going to climb a tree! Got it? If I climb the tree, I’ll be able to see a building, and then we can walk toward it. Genius, right?"
Proudly praising himself, Rocco puffed out his chest.
Laxus seemed to want to say something, but Rocco ignored him and gently placed the puppy on the ground before rolling up his sleeves.
He was fully motivated.
"Wuff~! Wuff~!"
Laxus whined.
"Huh? No, Laxus, you have to stay here. I don’t want you to get hurt," Rocco said as he glanced around, then trotted over to the biggest, thickest tree he could find.
Just as he placed his hands on the tree with a smug grin, Laxus suddenly started darting around his feet in a panicked way.
Rocco was momentarily confused but quickly scooped him up and set him down a little farther away.
Was the puppy worried about being left behind?
How cute.
"Stay here, Laxus. I’ll be back as soon as I spot a building. Then we’ll head to the annex together and have a nice meal," Rocco reassured the puppy, gently petting his ears.
Laxus quieted down almost immediately, his energy sapped by the soothing gesture.
Rocco nodded with satisfaction, and then turned back to the tree.
He grabbed onto the trunk and began to climb, using a bouldering technique, and then he started to scale the tree.
He hooked his feet into the grooves, swung from the branches, and pushed himself up, using his whole body to climb.
After what felt like a good ten minutes, Rocco started to think that maybe some time had passed.
Rocco, breathing heavily like a seasoned veteran, glanced back and called out to Laxus.
"Ha! Laxus! How’s this? I’m so high up, it’s like I’m flying!"
He threw the question eagerly, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
But to his surprise, Laxus, who was much closer than expected, looked up at him with a disappointed expression and lowered his ears.
With a soft, almost uninterested "Wuff," he let out a low whine.
Huh?
Why was Laxus being so cold?
"Laxus? Laxus! Hey, look at me! I’m amazing, right? Cool, huh... hey! Where are you going?!"
Laxus turned his back and trotted away, as if uninterested.
Watching the little puppy’s retreating figure, Rocco’s panic began to grow.
This was no time to be climbing trees!
He quickly scrambled to climb down, his movements in a flurry.
The ground was about a meter below, he estimated.
Hmm, not bad for him, right?
He admired his progress with a gleaming smile.
Compared to his past life, when even walking felt like a struggle, this was incredible.
He couldn’t stop the excitement building in him.
Today, they were having celebratory rice!
"Wait, Laxus! I’m coming down now... hold on, what? Wait a second. Huh? I can’t get down?"
He paused suddenly, freezing mid-descent.
It was so unexpected that he couldn’t help but mutter aloud.
The unexpected situation was, of course, the fact that he couldn’t seem to detach his hands and feet from the tree.
Um, this was his first time climbing a tree—ever—and he hadn’t expected this at all... huh?
He wanted to ask tree-climbing experts, but was it possible that tree climbing was, in fact, the whole excursion, including the challenge of getting back down?
Rocco was feeling a little perplexed.
"...This is bad, Laxus. This is one of the seven wonders of the world. I can climb the tree, but I can’t get down!"
