Chapter 64: The Fluffy Intruder

Although the dog hadn’t made a sound since it arrived, which worried Rocco at first, the sight of its tail wagging enthusiastically in response to his touch reassured him.

At least it seemed healthy and capable of movement.

If the dog had been found at the scene of a mafia skirmish, it must’ve witnessed unimaginable horrors.

Rocco couldn’t help but wonder if its owner had been one of the victims.

If so, the poor creature had lost its family.

Perhaps it had even seen its owner’s lifeless body...

"I’ll be your family now," Rocco whispered, burying his face in the dog’s soft fur. "You’ll eat lots of good food and play as much as you want."

The dog responded with a cheerful nuzzle, closing its red eyes in delight.

Can it understand me?

Rocco marveled.

It seems smarter than most people he knows.

As he continued to pet the dog, a thought struck him.

Come to think of it, red-eyed dogs are pretty rare... His mind wandered further.

Didn’t "that person" have red eyes, too?

A low growl broke his train of thought.

"Huh? What?!" Rocco turned around and startled. "Ragar, what’s wrong? Wait, you’re turning into a lion!"

Behind him, the familiar voice of a beast growled louder, and Rocco whipped around to see Ragar, his loyal bodyguard, glaring at the dog.

What had been a calm demeanor moments ago was now a display of sharp teeth and claws, with his fur beginning to bristle and spread over Ragar’s form.

Ragar had exhibited mild transformations before, usually triggered by anger or excitement, but this was far more intense than anything Rocco had witnessed.

Why is Ragar reacting this way to the dog?

"Hmm? Master, it seems Young Master Rocco’s aide has undergone a transformation," the man in glasses observed.

Marcus sighed in irritation. "What now? Get him out of here before he wrecks the room."

The sharp growls had drawn the attention of both Marcus and the bespectacled man.

Without hesitation, Marcus gestured for the latter to remove Ragar.

Alarmed, Rocco jumped in front of Ragar protectively.

"Georgio! Take Ragar outside!" Rocco shouted over his shoulder.

Even if Ragar was behaving aggressively, Rocco couldn’t bear to see him forcibly removed.

Fighting through his trembling legs, he managed to get Georgio to gently escort Ragar out.

Only after the door clicked shut did Rocco exhale in relief.

"I-I’m sorry, Father... Ragar didn’t mean to—he just got a little worked up—"

"’Worked up,’ you say...?" Marcus muttered, raising an eyebrow.

"’Worked up...’" echoed the bespectacled man, his tone unreadable.

Rocco flushed, clutching the fluffy dog closer as if for comfort. "H-he was growling! That’s what I meant!" he protested internally, cheeks burning as he buried his face in the dog’s fur to avoid their gazes.

As Rocco tried to calm his embarrassment, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from the hallway.

These weren’t Ragar’s or Georgio’s—someone else was approaching.

Marcus’s brow furrowed in annoyance at the disturbance.

The heavy, rapid steps grated on his nerves.

"Master!" a voice called urgently, moments before the door swung open. "I have a report—!"

As expected, the person who entered the room was a burly, unfamiliar subordinate.

This was Marcus’s office, yet the man didn’t bother to knock.

Shouldn’t he knock first?

Rocco thought, though it seemed his concern wasn’t entirely misplaced.

"What is the meaning of this? Barging in without knocking... such disrespect before the family head," the bespectacled man remarked coldly.

"M-my apologies!" the subordinate stammered, bowing deeply. "I bring urgent news!"

The man in glasses, who usually wore a calm and smiling expression, now carried a frosty air that sent chills through the room.

So he can look scary after all, Rocco thought nervously.

The office’s previously lighthearted atmosphere had shifted to the tense sharpness of the mafia world, leaving Rocco too intimidated to speak.

He shrank back, clutching the fluffy dog closer and trying to fade into the background.

"The Del Fiore family successor has gone into missing following the recent conflict!" the subordinate reported, his voice trembling under the weight of the bespectacled man’s icy glare.

As those words filled the room, the air grew even heavier.

The impact wasn’t lost on anyone present.

Even Rocco, though holding his dog tightly, couldn’t stop a quiet murmur from escaping his lips.

"The... ’Male Lead’ is Missing?"

His whisper was likely only heard by the dog nestled in his arms.

Was this supposed to happen in the original story?

His mind raced, and tension coursed through his body.

He realized belatedly that he’d been squeezing the dog too tightly, as it let out a small whimper.

"Oh, sorry about that, little guy. Did I hurt you?" he asked hurriedly.

The dog responded with a soft, comforting whine and licked his hand as if to reassure him.

Rocco couldn’t help but smile at the gesture.

Stroking the fluffy fur gently, he noticed the dog’s red eyes narrowing contentedly.

There’s something oddly familiar about this dog...

"Hmm... Hey, little pup, has anyone ever told you that you look like someone?" Rocco asked with a curious tilt of his head.

The dog cocked its head, letting out a questioning whimper.

It seemed no one had made such a comparison before.

Maybe it’s just my imagination... Rocco thought, until a sudden realization struck him.

Wait.

He felt this earlier too!

This dog... looks just like Laxus Del Fiore, the Male Lead of the story!

"Ah-ha! You must be some rich person’s pet," Rocco declared triumphantly.

That explained everything.

Pets often resembled their owners, right? Clearly, this little guy belonged to someone close to the Male Lead.

Satisfied with his conclusion, Rocco cheerfully continued petting the dog, his mood much lighter now.

Yet, in his excitement, he completely forgot one crucial detail: Ragar’s earlier transformation.

Specifically, one of the triggers for such a reaction—is when a Beastman senses the presence of someone who are more superior than them.

It seemed that the disappearance of the successor of the Del Fiore family—a key figure among the protagonists of the underworld—was a big incident.
