Chapter 60: An Awkward Reunion
"Oh my, that one again..."
The distance from the house to the gate was quite far, but it seemed the attendant had keenly detected their observation.
As expected of the man known as ’Georgio the Hyena,’ the one who plunged the kingdom into terror.
Even so, there was a marked contrast in the way this Georgio looked at Rocco—full of tender affection—and the way his gaze pierced others, cold and calculating.
The duality of this man remained a mystery.
"...Georgio the Hyena, is it?" Marcus murmured, returning to his usual calm demeanor after being rattled by Georgio’s glare. "Speaking of him, how is the surveillance progressing? Has he shown any signs of harming the boy?"
The surveillance referred to Marcus’s order to keep a close watch on Georgio, ensuring he posed no threat to Rocco.
While the official order was to confirm whether Georgio intended harm to the Di Malvento family, the servant knew better.
To any outsider, it was obvious this was just a doting father worrying about his son, even if Marcus himself seemed oblivious to that fact.
"Yes, Master. So far, there are no indications that Georgio intends to harm Young Master Rocco. On the contrary, he seems to be quite fixated on him—utterly devoted, even. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say he’s completely smitten."
A few days had passed since the infamous birthday party.
Marcus had ordered his subordinates to keep a close watch on Georgio the Hyena, but every report came back the same:
"Georgio the Hyena is utterly devoted to Young Master Rocco, showing no signs of betrayal whatsoever."
This had already been conveyed to Marcus, but it seemed his overprotective nature wouldn’t even allow him to trust the reports of his closest aide.
If he was that concerned, he could confirm the truth with his own eyes—but such thoughts, though lingering in the aide’s mind, were never voiced.
It was up to Marcus to recognize his own feelings.
"Devotion... Naturally," Marcus muttered. "That boy carries the blood of the Di Malvento family. Even Georgio the Hyena could not possibly resist Rocco’s charm."
His smug expression suggested he might realize the depth of his feelings if he took a good look in the mirror.
Yet, knowing Marcus’s stubbornness, such self-awareness seemed improbable.
Since the day of the birthday party, when Rocco had risked his life to save Sylas, Marcus had been utterly captivated by the boy.
Every day, without fail, he pestered his aide for updates about Rocco’s activities.
At dinners, Young Master Sylas would boast about Rocco’s endearing behavior, and Marcus, painting vivid images of those moments in his mind, had grown increasingly enamored.
Poor, pitiable master.
After years of cold treatment toward Rocco, it was only natural the boy now harbored resentment.
However, such consequences were the result of Marcus’s own actions.
He would have to take responsibility and make amends on his own.
"...Yes, indeed," the aide replied with a polite smile, before redirecting the conversation. "More importantly, Master, I must insist you stop pacing about so frantically. Would you truly wish to appear so undignified before Young Master Rocco?"
Perhaps it was the excitement of finally meeting his beloved son, or maybe the anxiety... He couldn’t help but express his mild irritation at his Master, who had been moving around restlessly for some time.
Normally, Marcus would have rebuked him, his heavy hand ready to strike for daring to voice such concerns.
However, today, it seemed that Marcus was too nervous to even furrow his brow.
Without a word, he hastily sank down onto the sofa.
"...Keep a close watch on that woman," Marcus muttered suddenly, his gaze flicking toward the door as if checking for something.
Strasbourg blinked his eyes in surprise at the unexpected command.
He tilted his head, wondering why Marcus had given such an order, but he quickly understood.
Ah, it was because Young Master Rocco was visiting the main house today.
Young Master Rocco is the second son of the Di Malvento family and the Young Master Sylas, not only he was the heir of the Di Malvento family but he was also cherished dearly by his father.
The woman who had endangered both of them had been confined to a corner of the main house by Marcus after that incident.
Marcus likely didn’t want Rocco to learn of his mother’s repugnant nature, or the unpleasant situation surrounding her.
Stroudsburg understanding Marcus’s intentions, couldn’t help but smile faintly, his lips curling gently.
"...Understood."
The Di Malvento family had no room for feelings.
Even between parent and child, the only things that existed were strict hierarchies and rigorous discipline.
Yet, as Stroudsburg observed, Marcus seemed to be under the illusion that he was simply following the family’s usual rules.
To an outsider, he would look just like any other father.
Marcus, however, was blissfully unaware of this fact.
After Stroudsburg smiled softly, his expression shifted as he suddenly noticed the presence of several people approaching the room.
It seemed that the long-awaited guests had finally arrived.
Moving toward the door to greet them, he overheard a hushed conversation.
"—Huh? Do I knock? Wait, I’m not ready..."
"—It’s fine, Master! Just, hee-hee-hoo! Say it like this?"
"—Cut it out, you pervert! That’s a breathing technique to ease labor pains!"
With a light smile, Stroudsburg turned around to glance at Marcus.
As expected, Marcus’s face was now one of exasperation, rubbing his forehead in disbelief.
However, it seemed the tension had finally eased, which was a relief.
With no time to wait for the meeting to drag on any longer, Stroudsburg mercilessly swung the door open and poked his head outside.
Perhaps startled by the sudden opening, Young Master Rocco, who had been standing in front of the room, froze in place, his fur standing on end like a cat.
He looked almost like a small animal—adorable.
"We’ve been expecting you. The head of the family is waiting, Young Master Rocci. Please, come inside."
Stroudsburg called out with a wide smile, doing his best not to frighten him.
