Chapter 54: Rocco’s Awakening

"...The only accomplishment I can credit you with," Sylas said quietly, "is giving birth to Rocco."

There was room for leniency.

She had, after all, brought Rocco into the world.

For that alone, Sylas considered granting her the mercy of a swift and painless death as one possible option.

"...Rejoice. For harming the Di Malvento family’s treasure, you’ll be punished personally by my father," he said, his voice devoid of emotion.

With those final words, Sylas turned his back on the hysterical woman, leaving her to her fate.

Something warm was wrapped around his body.

It felt constricting but also oddly comforting, enveloping him completely.

The sensation was what woke him up.

...

As his vision cleared, Rocco blinked his eyes at the sight above him.

It wasn’t an unfamiliar ceiling—far from it.

He instantly recognized the canopy of his own bed.

"What the hell..."

Fragments of his memory rushed back like a slideshow of regrets.

His muttered words betrayed the panic bubbling within him.

Things had gone disastrously wrong.

He hadn’t even managed to attempt the "Win Him Over with Candy" plan, which was supposed to be part of his grand strategy to earn goodwill.

Worse, his attempt to save Sylas from his mother’s clutches had been a complete mess from start to finish.

He had fallen into the lake, lost consciousness... and then what?

How much time had passed?

Rocco tried to sit up, though his body trembled as if rebelling against him.

But no matter how much effort he mustered, he couldn’t move.

Confused, he glanced around, and his eyes froze.

How had he not noticed?

Lying beside him was Georgio who is peacefully asleep.

His strikingly handsome face was serene, framed by loose strands of hair.

But more pressing than that was the way Georgio had wrapped his arms and legs tightly around Rocco like a human octopus.

"Wake up, Georgio. Explain this situation," Rocco said, his tone sharp.

"Mmh... nngh," Georgio groaned sleepily, mumbling incoherently.

"Hey, idiot! Don’t go grabbing my chest!"

Georgio, still groggy, shifted and absentmindedly let his hand wander.

It landed squarely on Rocco’s chest—or what would be his chest if he had anything there to grab.

As Georgio’s hand began to pat and rub, Rocco’s expression turned flat with exasperation.

"You won’t find anything there, you moron. There’s nothing to grab," he muttered, glaring at the hand with dull irritation.

Was Georgio dreaming of some curvaceous beauty?

If so, it was a rather bold and inappropriate dream, Rocco thought, glaring at the wandering hand with tired disdain as it continued its awkward, aimless movements.

No matter how much he fidgeted with his fingers, all Georgio would find was Rocco’s very unremarkable chest.

Letting out a heavy sigh, Rocco thought to himself, Georgio really is such a weirdo.

"Mmh... Master?" Georgio mumbled groggily.

"Finally awake? Good. Now explain the situation, Georgio. What happened to me?"

Rocco patted Georgio’s shoulder lightly, shaking him until the man finally stirred.

After a few seconds, Georgio slowly opened his eyes and let out a long yawn.

His dark green eyes curved into crescent moons as a sweet, almost intoxicating smile spread across his face.

Georgio always carried an air of mystery, but his post-sleep look was something else entirely—borderline seductive.

Even Rocco, who was well accustomed to Georgios antics, found himself momentarily startled.

The man’s deep, fathomless eyes felt like they could swallow you whole.

It was a stark contrast to his usual carefree demeanor, making him seem like an entirely different person.

"Good morning, Master," Georgio said warmly. "The doctor was here earlier to check on you. Are you in pain? Does anything feel wrong?"

"I’m fine. Actually, I feel even better than I did this morning," Rocco replied, his tone upbeat.

Now free from Georgio’s overbearing grip, Rocco sat up, stretching his arms and legs before striking a playful muscle pose. "See? I’m totally fine!"

Georgio chuckled softly, his smile turning more relaxed. "That’s a relief," he said, exhaling as though a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.

"Right, you wanted an update on the situation, didn’t you?" Georgio mused, tilting his head lazily. "There’s not much to report... Oh, but I guess I should mention that your brother and father dropped by earlier."

"I got it. Nothing major to report—wait, WHAT?!" Rocco’s voice shot up an octave as the realization hit him. "They were here?!"

Georgio took advantage of the moment, pulling Rocco into a tight hug amidst the chaos.

At first, Rocco didn’t resist and casually nodding his head as Georgio spoke.

However, the meaning of Georgio’s words hit him like a thunderbolt, and his calm demeanor shattered.

He froze for a second before springing to his feet, like a startled cat puffing up its fur.

"Wait, wait, wait... I didn’t even bow or apologize to them! Not even once!" Rocco stammered, panic lacing his words.

"Apologize? Was this really such a big deal?" Georgio asked, tilting his head in confusion.

Rocco’s mind raced.

His older brother and father—people who supposedly hated and despised him—had gone out of their way to visit him in the annex.

And what had he done?

Slept through the entire thing!

No groveling, no showing respect, just snoring away without a care in the world.

This is bad—terrible! Now they’ll hate me even more! They probably think I’m some ungrateful brat!

"Your big brother and father were worried about you, you know," Georgio said, his voice soft and nonchalant. "In fact, your father even mentioned wanting to thank you for saving your brother."

"W-WHAT?!" Rocco’s eyes nearly bulged out of his head.

That could only mean one thing—the "Thanks for everything; now I’ll destroy you" kind of deal.

Like in all those mafia movies, where someone says, "I owe you one," but it’s really just a thinly veiled threat.

"Oh no, oh no, oh no... This is bad. I can’t avoid the bad ending, can I?!" Rocco wailed, clutching his head as tears began to well up in his eyes. "This is it... I’m doomed!"
