Chapter 178: The Grand Deception

It was as if a flurry of conversation was happening, but none of it made sense—it didn’t even feel like a real conversation.

It was almost as though Sylas was coercing the king into agreeing with him.

Even though the king was still speaking, Sylas’s relentless barrage of words left no room for the nobles to interject.

Was this part of Sylas’s plan or some kind of strategy?

Rocco couldn’t quite follow along and was left in a daze.

Suddenly, Sylas picked Rocco up as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

"...Huh?"

Rocco blinked in surprise as Sylas lifted him by the sides, holding him up almost like a trophy for the room to see.

What is he doing...?

Confused, Rocco was even more startled when Sylas’s lips pressed close to his ear, and he whispered instructions softly.

"Rocco, lament your mother’s crimes as if you’re grieving. Cry as loudly as you can."

Rocco was taken aback by Sylas’s words.

It seemed his time to shine had finally arrived.

He puffed up his chest, brimming with enthusiasm, eagerly waiting for his moment.

Sylas turned to the king, locking eyes with him, and proclaimed loudly.

"Your Majesty, Rocco was subjected to daily abuse by his mother. And all of this abuse was ordered by Duke Wimburg!"

"What!?"

The words hit like a bombshell.

Rocco couldn’t help but think, What?!

He had unintentionally mirrored the reaction of the villainous old man.

At least he didn’t say it out loud.

Rocco was left in confusion, thinking Wasn’t it Sylas who was actually the one abused...?

However, while Rocco stood there bewildered, Sylas deliberately dropped his previously emotionless expression and contorted his face into one of feigned distress.

Well, that’s some impressive acting.

The shock confession sent the entire chamber into an uproar.

The room buzzed with whispers, and Rocco furrowed his brow as he glanced around.

Is this really okay?

This is escalating way too quickly...

"A letter was found in my late mother’s room," Sylas continued, "A letter that seemed to document her exchanges with Duke Wimburg. It detailed the Duke’s conspiracy in full."

"What are you talking about!? I know nothing about this! It’s a lie!"

"...Duke Wimburg, when will you finally admit it? Since your daughter married my father, all the tragedies that followed were part of your plan, weren’t they?"

Sylas lowered his eyes as if filled with sorrow.

I don’t know anything about this letter or whatever else they’re talking about... Rocco thought, still confused.

He watched Sylas closely, and then, suddenly, it hit him.

Oh wait.

This is all a fabrication.

Sylas was boldly lying through his teeth.

"..."

Rocco turned to give an almost deadpan look, his eyes narrowing.

Sure enough, the Del Fiore father and son were sitting there, laughing and enjoying the spectacle.

Ah, so it’s all part of their devious scheme, huh?

As Sylas continued, his voice filled with passion, "How much suffering has my brother endured while withstanding daily abuse from our mother? Do you, Duke Wimburg, have no heart for the tears of your own grandson?"

At that moment, Sylas swiftly raised Rocco up into the air, showing him to everyone in the room.

All eyes turned toward him.

Under the relentless gazes, Rocco nervously wiped cold sweat from his brow, his hands trembling as he quickly covered his eyes with them, trying to act the part.

"Uuuhhhh... Waaaahhhh!"

And just like that, Rocco’s dramatic crying performance began.

Rocco was surprised that no tears seemed to come, but there was nothing he could do about it, so he decided to just continue the act by covering his face with his hands.

As he wailed loudly, delivering a performance worthy of a wooden actor, he exaggerated his sobs and sniffles, speaking in a dramatically fake voice.

"Mother... she was so scary. If it weren’t for my kind father and brother, I don’t know what would have happened to me..."

What came to mind were the days of mistreatment forced upon him by his father and Sylas.

Back then, there had been no "kind father and brother," so honestly, there was barely any emotion in his voice.

However, that made sense.

After all, when he thought back on that time, all he could remember was being alone and feeling lonely.

"Grandfather, you’re awful. You were so mean to Mother. I hate you, Grandfather!"

He heard a voice from across the room—a shocked, "What!?" It seemed the plan was working as intended.

While Rocco continued his sobbing act and Sylas nodded his head vigorously, picking up the pace of his words.

It was a little forceful, but it seemed like Sylas intended to push through with it, so Rocco decided to just go along with it.

"Your Majesty, did you hear that? My brother is still just a child. How could you so easily hand him over to a grandfather who encouraged such abuse? I beg you, think again before you make decisions!"

The king visibly flinched and began looking around nervously.

This was still a soft version of Sylas’s usual sharp-tongued remarks, but if the king were hit with the kind of harsh words Rocco was used to hearing from Laxus, he might just collapse.

"F-Foolishness! Do you have proof!? I bet these words from my grandchild are nothing but lies you’ve made him say!"

Hmm, the Duke’s rebuttal was actually correct here.

After all, Rocco was being made to say these things.

But even so, unfortunately, he couldn’t side with the Duke.

Although it felt bad for him, Rocco would have to let Sylas take the upper hand and let the Duke lose this round.

"Didn’t you hear what I said? I just told you that we found the letter that serves as evidence. On top of that, I also have a recording that supports the claim of my mother’s abuse."

Rocco was stunned.

Wait, what? There’s a recording too?

Despite being the one directly involved, Rocco realized, oddly enough, that he knew nothing about this.
