Chapter 54: Wanting More
Chapter 54: Wanting More
"...My family."
His voice was softer this time.
Faint.
Like he was reluctant to say it.
Xavier’s frown deepened.
"Your family?"
Riven sighed dramatically, shoulders sinking lower into the cold water, eyes filled with distant sadness.
He shivered again, but this time it was not from the cold.
"...I was never really wanted," Riven murmured. "My step brother, Julius—" He paused, then shook his head as if it pained him to even say the name. "He was always cruel to me. My parents turned a blind eye to it. It was normal, you know? To be treated like nothing. That’s just how it is when you are a half-breed."
He should not feel bad. He should not be feeling anything... But his heart still ached for him. Was it his fault for being born this way? It was his father who failed, if he was a proper wolf, he would not have caused this. Low-quality sperm, Xavier scoffed.
His voice was so convincing.
Xavier missed the smirk that flickered across Riven’s lips for a split second before disappearing.
"...Your stepbrother did this to you?" Xavier asked, his voice colder now.
Riven let out a small, bitter laugh.
"He did much worse."
Riven thought for a second, should he have thrown Ronan under the bus instead? Well, he already said Julius so there was no backing out now. He will have to find a different way to punish that big bad wolf.
The water dripped from Riven’s skin, trailing down his exposed back, catching against the red wounds in a way that made them seem more prominent.
Xavier should not have cared.
He was not here to care.
He was here to keep Riven alive and nothing else.
But something about those marks—about the way Riven had flinched—
It bothered him.
More than it should.
His fox instincts were screaming at him, his mind racing to rationalise why he was even entertaining this conversation.
Xavier did not know the reason why he was affected but Riven was starting to understand why.
He was not a werewolf shifter but a fox shifter, like how the rabbit clan served the wolf clan... The Fox shifters served the snow leopards.
And even though he was a fox, not a wold, Riven’s pheromones seemed to seep into him, affecting him in ways they shouldn’t. It wasn’t just wolves who responded to his scent. He was a special omega indeed.
And Xavier...
Xavier had never wanted anything.
Until now.
It was foreign.
Unfamiliar.
Dangerous.
He didn’t even realize how tense he had gotten until Riven let out a pitiful whimper, curling into himself slightly.
"...Cold," he muttered under his breath.
Xavier exhaled sharply.
Of course, the water was still freezing. He never found an issue with it, he was a servant but Riven... Knowing this half-wolf was from a noble family, he was not used to it. He wished he could do something to help.
Riven was shivering.
His pale skin was practically trembling.
Even though it was clear he was milking the situation for sympathy, Xavier had seen the moment he first touched the scars that he was being affected by this wolf.
He moved to grab a bucket, filling it with warmer water from the side basin. It wasn’t hot, but at least it would not make Riven shiver like a wet pup.
Riven perked up slightly, his green eyes flickering with curiosity.
"Oh? You’re being nice to me now?"
Xavier ignored him.
He poured the warm water over Riven’s shoulders, watching as the half-wolf sighed at the sensation, his ears twitching in satisfaction.
"...Better?" Xavier asked gruffly.
Riven nodded, his eyes half-lidded as he sighed at the warmth now seeping into his skin. His usual smugness was gone, replaced with a pleased submission that made something stir deep inside Xavier’s chest.
He wasn’t sure what it was.
Or maybe, he just didn’t want to name it.
Xavier exhaled slowly, forcing himself to focus on the task at hand. He reached for the cloth again, dipping it into the water and pressing it firmly against Riven’s bare shoulder.
The moment their skin touched, Riven shivered.
Not from the cold this time.
Xavier felt the slight, almost imperceptible tremor, the way Riven’s muscles tensed under his grip before slowly relaxing, as if he was deliberately relishing the contact.
He peeked at Xavier with one and whispered slowly, "Careful..." As if he was begging him.
"...Of what?" Xavier asked, though his voice had lost some of its usual bite.
Riven smirked, but this time it wasn’t teasing—it was slow, deliberate.
"You’re touching me like you want to do more than just wash me."
Xavier froze.
His grip on Riven’s shoulder tightened, his nails almost digging into the damp skin before he abruptly let go, grabbing the towel instead. It took a lot of energy to stop himself from being rough.
"You talk too much," he muttered.
Riven chuckled.
"You act too tense."
Xavier ignored him, roughly dragging the towel over his shoulders, down his exposed collarbones. He shouldn’t have been looking, but his eyes followed the way droplets of water slid down Riven’s throat, tracing over the soft dip before vanishing beneath the towel.
Damn it.
He dried him off quickly, not trusting himself to linger, though Riven clearly wanted him to.
The half-wolf sighed softly, shifting under his touch, his body leaning slightly forward. Not enough to be obvious, but just enough that Xavier felt the heat radiating off his skin.
He was too close.
Xavier clenched his jaw, throwing the towel aside and grabbing the fresh set of clothes—a simple black tunic and trousers.
"These were mine," he said gruffly.
"...Your old clothes?" He mused, voice smooth as silk. "Didn’t know you were sentimental, Xavier."
Xavier scowled.
He carefully dressed this very naughty, very rebellious wolf. Riven, however refused to comply, he would take the chance to move closer to that Xavier’s rough hands kept touching his skin. He found this pleasurable. He wanted more.
