Chapter 48: A New Male Lead
Chapter 48: A New Male Lead
He could tell, even without seeing, that the boss—the deep-voiced man who had ordered his captors’ deaths—was not in the carriage with him. That should have been a relief, but somehow, it wasn’t. Instead, he was seated across from the man who had caught him when he fell earlier.
Riven swallowed, his throat dry. He didn’t know what to expect from this one. He had been careful with him, adjusting his bindings so they wouldn’t hurt. Yet at the same time, he had made sure Riven had no chance of escape.
What kind of person was he dealing with?
Clearing his throat, he decided to test the waters. "Wh-where am I being taken to?"
Silence.
The air remained still, save for the steady rhythm of the carriage wheels against the road. The man didn’t answer, didn’t even shift in his seat. It was as if he hadn’t heard the question at all.
Riven’s tail flicked in frustration. He opened his mouth to try again—
The carriage took a sharp turn.
Riven, already unbalanced from his restraints, lurched to the side. He braced for impact, expecting to hit the wooden wall or crash against the seat—
But instead, firm hands caught him.
For the second time that night, the same man had stopped him from falling.
Riven froze, breath hitching as he found himself steadied with practiced ease. The grip on him was neither forceful nor harsh. It was... Careful.
Like a bodyguard ensuring his charge didn’t get so much as a bruise.
The realisation made his skin prickle.
What the hell was going on?
Was he being kidnapped or... Protected?
Riven was beginning to notice a pattern.
He was caught, restrained, and transported like some precious cargo—only to be treated with an odd level of care. It was confusing, to say the least. One moment, hands were rough, ensuring he was properly tied up, bound so he couldn’t run, and the next, those same hands were preventing him from getting hurt.
It was like they didn’t want to damage him, but they also didn’t want to let him go.
When the carriage finally came to a stop, Riven’s sharp ears twitched. The sounds of horses shifting, the creak of a heavy gate opening, and the distinct click of boots on cobblestone filled his senses. He wasn’t taken to some filthy underground establishment—no, wherever he was, it smelled of expensive oils, polished wood, and something faintly metallic.
A well-maintained estate, perhaps?
His thoughts didn’t have time to settle before the carriage door was opened, and the man who had been watching him throughout the journey reached for him.
Riven tensed but didn’t resist as he was carefully lifted out of the carriage. Once his feet touched the ground, he was guided forward with deliberate steps. His blindfold was still in place, leaving him unable to see where he was, but at least he wasn’t being shoved around like a ragdoll.
That was, until they reached the center of the space.
Without warning, a sharp force pushed him down.
Riven yelped as he was forced onto his knees, his bound hands making it impossible to catch himself. He braced for pain, expecting his knees to scrape against rough stone or unyielding marble, but...
It didn’t hurt.
The ground beneath him was firm, but not cruel. A carpet, maybe?
Why did that matter? What was the point of being gentle one moment and then humiliating him the next?
Before he could dwell on it further, hands moved to the back of his head, and with a swift tug, the blindfold was removed.
The sudden exposure to light made Riven blink rapidly. His vision swam, blurred shapes shifting and blending until, slowly, the world around him came into focus.
And the first thing he saw was him.
Tall.
Dark blond hair, neatly styled, framing a face that was both aristocratic and dangerous. His features were sharp, refined—like a sculpture carved from the finest marble, his beauty eerie in its perfection. His eyes, however, were the most striking of all.
Obsidian. Cold and cunning, yet somehow brimming with amusement, as though he found entertainment in Riven’s current state.
The man was dressed entirely in black. A long coat rested over his broad shoulders, layered over a fitted vest and crisp shirt. Everything about him exuded power, control—ownership.
But what really caught Riven’s attention were the gloves.
Black leather, pristine, tightly fitted over long, elegant fingers.
His brain blanked out for a moment.
Aiyah... So handsome. Look at those gloves... Those hands...
He swallowed. The things he could do with them—
His thoughts were abruptly cut off when the man spoke.
"Very curious..." The deep, velvety voice sent a shiver down Riven’s spine. "It seems this half-breed is indeed more in touch with his human side. This is unprecedented. The intel was true."
Riven froze.
His ears twitched as recognition struck. That voice...
Soran.
Who else could it be?!
The revelation hit Riven like a bolt of lightning.
This was another male lead.
Soran, the white leopard shifter. A man as infamous as he was powerful. He dealt in secrets, controlled the underground like a grand chess master, and had the ability to dismantle entire noble houses with a whisper. There wasn’t a single transaction, scandal, or betrayal in high society that he wasn’t aware of.
And in the story...
He had been obsessed with the bunny shifter.
A true yandere.
Riven felt his heart race. He had been taken by this man?
Thank you, BL gods, I am truly blessed!
But also, oh no.
This was dangerous. This man was not someone to take lightly. Soran was calculated, manipulative, and when he set his sights on something—or someone—he never let go.
Riven’s thoughts spiraled.
Why was Soran so interested in him? Sure, half-breeds were rare, but not in the good kind of way. Society saw them as unstable, neither fully human nor fully beast, and they were often treated as defective.
Most half breeds were more in touch with their animalistic side, they were brutal, could not control urges, basically unevolved.
