Chapter 330: I’ll Forgo a Quiet Night

The blue hues of the sky had turned indigo by the time Lariette and Ruediger left Suit & Tie. Only a few streaks of magenta, amber and ruby dyed the skyline before darkness consumed them.

"Later, Maddie."

"Bye~."

The pair booked a cab, politely refusing when Madeline offered a ride. Sitting in the passenger backseat, they silently watched the scenery roll past outside, the view becoming a blur.

The orange glow of the streetlamps poured into the vehicle, flickering on them. Neither spoke as they sat in silence with only music playing by the radio. The driver also didn’t talk much to them.

"Home sweet home~"

Ruediger chuckled upon hearing Lariette’s declaration once they arrived at the apartment unit. Stepping past the door, the familiar view of their home welcomed them back from their weekend getaway.

"Someone’s excited," Ruediger mused, watching Lariette slip her feet into her bunny slippers, "Less tired today, huh?"

"Can’t deny that," Lariette giggled, her eyes curving into two crescent moons as she looked at Ruediger, "How about you, Eddy? You didn’t have to drive for hours after all."

Ruediger simply answered Lariette with a meaningful smile, eliciting her to laugh. The pair walked further inside, tummies full of delicious food and hearts full of joy.

Lariette disappeared into her room while Ruediger did the same to his. They both craved a hot shower or a soak in the tub after a long day outside. Still, they felt better because neither had to sit in the truck for hours.

Closing the door behind him, Ruediger put his backpack on the ottoman chair at the end of the bed. He felt quite sleepy, most likely because he didn’t get to rest well last night.

Still, he felt reluctant to go to bed. Despite already being by her side for most of the day, he still sought her presence.

’She’ll tease me if I tell her that.’

Ruediger moved from the center of the bedroom, heading to the washroom. He glanced at the windows, seeing the neon lights of the city faintly reflected behind the curtains.

At seven, the evening was still early. Nightlife had just begun for most city dwellers.

Reaching for the hem of his shirt, Ruediger pulled it over his head in one smooth motion. He tossed the fabric into the laundry basket, including the rest of his clothing.

The cool air of the washroom touched his skin, brushing over the sharp lines of his taut and lean torso, defined from years of regular exercise. His broad chest rose and fell subtly with each breath.

Rising one hand, his arm flexed slightly as he pulled the tie securing his hair, letting his crimson locks fall freely over his shoulders. A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he stood before the mirror.

There. One above his heart and the other above his hipbone, faint purplish prints left by her. Some were marked along the curve of his collarbone, but visibly more subtle.

Lariette.

Ruediger traced one of them with his fingers, his gaze softening. Then, his eyes wandered down further, to the spot above his hip line.

"Eddy... why is there a scar here?"

Lariette’s question from that night echoed in Ruediger’s mind. She noticed the faint scar on that spot. She carefully touched it, tracing her fingertip on the jagged skin[01].

"Well, I was quite a rough boy when I was young."

Instead of answering Lariette with the truth, Ruediger simply said it was due to him playing wildly as a boy. Then, he pulled her for a kiss, trying to distract her from the ugly, albeit small, scar.

Exhaling a sigh, Ruediger lightly shook his head. He glanced once more at the mirror, then turned around. His feet brought him to the shower cubicle.

Soon, the sound of water hitting the shower floor echoed in the washroom and the steam rose, fogging the glass panels of the shower cubicle.

When Ruediger emerged from the washroom, clad in a set of thick pajamas, he caught the sound of TV playing in the distance. It seemed like Lariette was watching a show.

Before leaving, Ruediger grabbed his work tablet. He hadn’t checked his e-mails for a few days.

Since Edmund didn’t notify him, Ruediger knew nothing serious had happened. Still, he checked them out of habit, just enough to keep himself updated.

But a string of e-mails sent to his old e-mail address knotted his brows.

’...Vincent?’

Tapping on the screen, Ruediger found out the contents of the e-mails were similar. Vincent asked, seemingly almost pleading, to meet him.

The first e-mail was dated last Friday, the day Ruediger and Lariette went to Moonville.

Ruediger didn’t expect Vincent to know the existence of his old e-mail address. Perhaps his younger brother remembered from the e-mails he used to send him during their youth.

Only to receive no replies.

Vincent only knew his old number, which was still active but Ruediger didn’t bother with it anymore. The SIM card lay somewhere inside his home office.

’Wasting my time.’

Shaking his head, Ruediger deleted Vincent’s e-mails before marking his address as a spammer. He couldn’t help but wonder, did the younger man also send letters to this apartment?

’I’ll check the letter box tomorrow.’

Putting the tablet away, Ruediger rose to his feet before heading to the living room. He saw Lariette on the couch.

She donned a long-sleeved yellow nightgown with ruffles at the hemlines. Her face was slightly flushed, perhaps from the hot shower she took.

"Eddy, here~"

Ruediger chuckled softly when Lariette excitedly waved at him to come near. Settling on the couch, he easily slipped his arms around her. She laughed while leaning on him.

"Anything good to watch?" said Ruediger, his voice low above Lariette’s head, "You’re not sleepy yet?"

"Yeah. I’ll just be relaxing and watching some animals. How about you?" Lariette lifted her chin, looking at Ruediger, "You should go to bed if you’re tired. No need to accompany me."

She still remembered he didn’t get decent sleep the previous night. While trying not to touch the subject of his nightmare, she tried to gently nudge him to get more rest.

"It’s still early," Ruediger smiled, leaning down to kiss Lariette’s temple, "Let’s just stay like this for now."

"Hehe, okay~"

Lariette craned her neck, returning the gesture by pecking Ruediger’s jaw. Then, the pair stayed in silence as they watched the wildlife documentary played on the TV screen.

"I didn’t know about this bird until now," Lariette muttered halfway through the show, her hands laying on the back of Ruediger’s, nestled on her tummy, "Albatrosses, huh?"

Ruediger’s chuckles rang above Lariette’s head, his eyes hadn’t strayed from the TV screen as he watched the birds with black wingtips, "They have a variety of species."

"Their courtship dance is cute," Lariette beamed. Mischief gleaming in her eyes, she said teasingly, one finger poking Ruediger’s nose, "You should’ve danced when you first confessed to me. You’d definitely charm me more."

"Oho?" Ruediger arched one of his brows, amused by Lariette’s attempt to tease him. Taking her hand that was poking his nose, he brought it over his shoulder, "I didn’t dance back then, but we can dance in bed if you want it."

Blinking, Lariette sensed her face heating up, but she didn’t look away from Ruediger. She whispered, "I think I’ll forgo a quiet and relaxing night tonight."

Ruediger smiled, then leaned in for a kiss. He easily scooped Lariette up and brought her to his bedroom.
