Chapter 328: Are You Jealous?
Because the time was still early, Lariette and Ruediger headed to the VIP lounge to wait. The area was quiet and meticulously decorated with warm lighting and polished wood accents.
The soft hum of ambient music was played in the background, mixed with the faint chatters and the occasional clink of cutlery. Most seating areas in the lounge were vacant.
"Shall we sit there?" Lariette tugged Ruediger’s arm, pointing in a direction as she grinned, "We can look at the runway."
"Anything you say, my dear," Ruediger replied affectionately, earning chuckles from Lariette.
The pair sat side by side near the tall windows overlooking the runway. The bright afternoon sunlight streamed through the glass panels.
To Lariette’s delight, Ruediger ordered some tea and a plate of buttery shortbread. Their only meal today was the French toast casserole this morning.
The pair sipped the hot drink and nibbled the pastries while chatting. They decided to drop by Madeline’s butler cafe for a late lunch before heading back to the apartment.
"I’m going to the restroom," Ruediger said after putting his cup down. Rising from his seat, he said jokingly, "Lettie, don’t run away with a stranger while I’m gone."
Lariette chuckled, lifting her teacup, "Only if he’s more handsome than you."
Ruediger smirked. Patting Lariette’s head twice, he turned around and walked off to the restroom. His towering figure disappeared at an intersection.
Lariette picked another piece of shortbread. As she read one of the magazines offered by the lounge, she kept her head down, not bothering with her surroundings.
Five minutes later, two young men entered the lounge. Both handsome and stylish in tailored coats and polished leather shoes, holding a briefcase each.
They sat at a table not far from the windows. One of them noticed the lone beauty munching some snacks by the window. After exchanging whispers, the men stood up and approached her with confident smiles.
"Excuse me, miss," one of them said, tilting his head as he greeted Lariette, "Are you traveling alone?"
Lariette blinked in surprise. Lifting her chin, she saw the men in business suits. She kept her expression polite as she answered, "No, I’m not. I have company."
"Quite a pity," said the other with a playful grin, "We were going to ask if you’d like to join us for a coffee. Maybe we can invite your friend along."
Lariette smiled, amused, "I prefer tea, actually. And about that... Oh! My husband’s here!"
The two men froze for a moment. They saw Lariette’s face beaming as she waved behind their shoulders.
Ruediger returned right on time. He also caught some words exchanged between Lariette and the two young men.
His pace slowed slightly as he took in the sight of the two men standing by her. He tightened his jaw almost imperceptibly despite trying to remain cool.
"Sorry, gentlemen. My wife won’t be joining you," Ruediger said smoothly, stepping up beside Lariette and placing a hand on her shoulder. He smiled yet it didn’t reach his eyes.
The two men were still slightly startled. One raised his hands in apology, "Ah... Sorry, sir. We didn’t know."
"We’re sorry for bothering you," the other added quickly. Then, both of them retreated with sheepish nods and smiles.
Lariette blinked slowly as she watched the amusing scene. Once the men were out of earshot, she turned to Ruediger with a grin.
"Eddy, you didn’t have to scare them off so quickly."
Arching his brows, Ruediger replied while sitting down next to Lariette, "They were hitting on my wife. I think I’ve exercised impressive restraint, my dear Lettie."
Lariette leaned in closer, her eyes twinkling. She whispered, "Was my husband jealous?"
Ruediger let out a soft scoff. A faint flush rose on his cheeks and the tips of his ears, he grumbled, "Wasn’t it obvious?"
Laughing, Lariette placed her head on Ruediger’s shoulder, "You’re cute, Eddy. Hehe, I could see you got jealous thanks to the two gentlemen."
Ruediger gave Lariette a helpless look, then slipped an arm around her shoulder, drawing her in closely. He whispered, "Lettie, don’t say things like that. Unless you’re ready for me to kiss you."
Lariette tilted her head up. Then, she murmured, "Maybe I am."
Without exchanging another word, he leaned in and brushed his lips against hers, just a soft, butterfly touch.
"We better be alone soon, not in a public place like this," Ruediger grumbled, dissatisfied, "I can’t kiss you as much as I like."
Lariette had no words to say. The heat crept to her face as she lightly smacked Ruediger’s chest. The lovers looked at each other and then laughed softly.
Soon, Lariette and Ruediger boarded the plane smoothly. As they sat in their wide and plush seats, a flight attendant offered refreshments.
Lariette looked out the window as the plane taxied down the runway. Moments later when they were in the air, she saw the countryside blurring into distant lines. The plane glided above patchwork fields and woods in the hues of copper.
Leaning close to Ruediger, Lariette whispered jokingly, "Are you relieved? The gentlemen aren’t on the same flight as us."
"Lettie," Ruediger half-laughing, half-sighing, "What to do? My wife is an enchanting beauty."
Lariette covered her mouth, trying to muffle her laughter. Swatting Ruediger’s shoulder, she said, "I’m only an enchanting beauty in your eyes."
Ruediger pursed his lips, refraining from laughing too much. As they shared jokes and quiet giggles, an hour passed.
When the plane touched down, the calm ambient faded as the buzz of the city’s main airport permeated the air. The terminal was alive with travelers pulling their luggage, distant boarding calls and the layered echo of hundreds to thousands of conversations.
Lariette adjusted the strap of her backpack as she followed Ruediger out of the arrival hall. Glancing at him, her eyes lit up with a familiar spark.
"Maddie gonna be surprised to see us. Hehe, I’ve been thinking about her cafe’s pumpkin ravioli."
Ruediger smiled, brushing a stray strand of hair behind Lariette’s ear, "I’m sure Maddie will be happy to see us. Let’s go. Our ride will be here soon."
Hand-in-hand, the pair walked out of the terminal, leaving their short yet fulfilling autumn weekend getaway behind.
