Chapter 55: Huang Bei
Feng and Chen Li walked for a while before finally reaching the carriages.
Up close, there were more than Feng had initially seen—three in total.
Around them stood three people who, upon spotting Chen Li approaching, quickly nodded and greeted him warmly.
"Hey, Old Chen! What took you so long? We’ve been waiting for ages!" One of the farmers, a man named Yan Hao, tried to sound annoyed, but his grin made it clear he was just teasing.
"Yeah, Old Chen, if you’d been just a little later, we would’ve left you behind!" Another farmer, Yan Li, chimed in.
From their nearly identical faces and matching mannerisms, it was obvious the two were twin brothers.
"Hey, you brats, can’t you see Old Chen has company? Try acting normal for once!" A deep voice cut through their banter as a muscular man emerged from behind one of the carriages.
He was tall, exuding a strong spiritual energy aura at the 8th level of Qi Condensation, and carried a small pack on his back—clearly a mercenary.
"It’s fine, Huang Bei. These kids are just messing around," Chen Li said, trying to smooth things over.
But before he could finish, Huang Bei spoke again, pressing the issue.
"Old Chen, you let people walk all over you too much. If someone saw them treating you like this, they’d think you were a pushover," Huang Bei said, shooting the twins a glare.
Yet the two were clearly used to this sort of thing.
Instead of looking intimidated, they stuck out their tongues and darted behind the old man.
"Hey, Old Chen, who’s this guy?" Yan Hao pointed at Feng, his curiosity evident.
"This? Just someone I met. He came from the Blackwood Forest. His name is... uh, what was it again?" Chen Li turned to Feng, who scratched his head, looking slightly embarrassed.
"My name is Lin Feng. It’s nice to meet all of you," he said, bowing his head slightly in a show of respect.
Yan Li was the next to speak, also asking a question.
"Hey, how did you get out of the Blackwood Forest alone? Are you from one of the villages inside?"
Both brothers seemed genuinely intrigued by Feng’s presence.
Feng also noticed that the mercenary-looking man, Huang Bei, remained silent, merely listening.
Yet, from the sharp glint in his eyes, it was clear he was assessing him carefully.
A faint spiritual energy pressure leaked from Huang Bei’s body—not strong enough for those without a Heaven’s Pact to notice, but Feng picked up on it immediately.
Good thing I already thought of an answer for situations like this.
Feng thought to himself as he quickly responded, keeping his voice steady.
"I’m from Raincloud Village. I was order to go to Silverpine City to sell some goods and pick up some supplies. You know how it is in the forest—some resources are hard to come by." He forced himself to remain calm.
Even though none of them posed a real threat to him except for Huang Bei, he still responded to the question respectfully as he had no intention of antagonizing the first people he’d met outside his village—aside from Elena, of course.
Before the twins could fire off more questions, Huang Bei, who had been silent until now, finally spoke.
"Can I ask what you’re selling?" His tone was laced with suspicion.
If Feng truly was from Raincloud Village, he should know exactly what kind of goods they typically traded in Silverpine City.
It was the kind of question where a single wrong answer could immediately brand him as a threat.
If that happened, things would become troublesome—finding another group willing to take him to Silverpine City this easily would be nearly impossible.
This time, Feng didn’t respond with words.
Instead, he reached into his bag of holding and retrieved a bottle filled with Rainlight Liquid, holding it up before speaking.
"I was ordered by Elder Zhou to sell this Rainlight Liquid in Silverpine City. As for why I came alone... I don’t get along with the others in my village and if I’m careful, I’m strong enough to protect myself in a fight."
Feng met Huang Bei’s gaze directly.
If this explanation wasn’t enough, then he’d have no choice but to leave and find another way to Silverpine City, even though he was strong enough to persuade them to take them there, Feng didn’t want to resort to violence against people who didn’t do anything to offend him.
I hope he doesn’t ask any more questions, or I’m going to be in trouble.
The reason was simple—no matter how strong he was, it would be unreasonable for a village to send someone through the Blackwood Forest alone.
It was far too dangerous.
From what he gathered from their questions, people from within the forest rarely traveled without a group, always moving together for safety, this means that him showing up here was an anomaly.
Huang Bei narrowed his eyes, parting his lips as if to say something, but before he could speak, Chen Li finally stepped in, diffusing the tension.
"Huang Bei, I already promised this person that I’d take him to Silverpine City. You don’t need to worry about him—I’ll take responsibility." His tone was firm, making it clear he didn’t intend to argue about it any further.
When Huang Bei heard what Chen Li said, he clicked his tongue and refused to speak further.
He moved his eyes away from Feng—clearly, even though he was still suspicious of his identity, he didn’t want to disrespect Chen Li’s decision.
"I don’t know what you want, kid, but if you ever do anything that threatens us, I’ll be the one to face you!" Huang Bei spoke in a solemn voice as he walked back toward one of the carriages.
"I hope you don’t get offended by his attitude. Even though he acts like that, he is still a kind person," Chen Li said as he tried to speak up for him.
