Chapter 53: Parting Gifts

When Elena heard what Feng said, her eyes narrowed in suspicion.

She clearly didn’t believe that Feng, who was only at the 6th level of Qi Condensation, could simply place his spiritual energy mark on her and deter spiritual beasts that could crush him within a few rounds of combat.

Yet, she didn’t want to spoil his mood, so she stayed silent, waiting for an explanation.

When Feng noticed the suspicious look on Elena’s face, he felt a bit embarrassed.

It was obviously unnatural for someone of his cultivation to make such a grand promise, but at the same time, he wasn’t keen on revealing his connection to the Blackwood Ruler.

"I know it sounds far-fetched and you probably don’t believe me, but it works!" Feng nodded solemnly, refusing to elaborate further.

Did this guy just make up some random excuse to touch my head?

Elena thought to herself, shaking her head.

Although Feng often seemed unserious, she couldn’t forget their first meeting.

He had been surrounded by that group of Red Faced Gorillas, and logic would dictate that a person at the sixth level of Qi Condensation would be intimidated and try to flee when faced with so many spiritual beasts—especially when one of them was at the seventh level. But...

This guy not only faced them head-on, but he also seemed confident he would be fine. And that aura of suppression... have I heard of something like that before?

She decided not to dwell too much on these thoughts and simply trust that Feng knew what he was doing.

Staring into his eyes, she gave a slight smile.

"Hey, even though I mess around sometimes, when it comes to life-and-death situations, I’m very reliable," Feng said, slapping his chest as if to prove a point.

Truth be told, he was doing his best not to spill his secrets and brag about his connection to the Blackwood Ruler.

But his common sense told him it would be unwise and might even endanger the Blackwood Ruler.

I can’t risk any harm reaching Senior Blackwood. If I did, it would be like biting the hand that fed me.

"Alright, I should probably go on ahead. Don’t take too long with whatever you’re going to do, you still owe me dinner, Elena!" Feng’s smile looked a bit comical, but there was genuine happiness in it.

It had been a long time since he’d had a real friend, and he didn’t want to mess it up.

Elena nodded, but just as Feng was about to turn and leave, she suddenly spoke, making him pause mid-step.

"Since you gave me something to protect myself, I’ll give you something in return," Elena said quietly, reaching into her bag of holding.

She handed something to Feng for safekeeping.

If anyone else from Brightshore City had seen what Elena gave Feng, they would have been paralyzed in shock.

What Feng received was a medallion.

It featured a design of a dragon encircling a golden spear, set against the backdrop of a large city.

Though Feng didn’t know exactly what it was, it was clearly something extraordinary.

A slight spiritual energy pressure emanated from it, confirming it was a spirit artifact.

"Once you get to Brightshore City, present this to the city guards.

Once they see it, they’ll understand what it means," Elena smiled as she handed the medallion to Feng.

As soon as Feng held it, a bright golden light flashed for a few seconds, making him squint before it returned to normal.

He was about to argue that this seemed too valuable when Elena’s words stopped him in his tracks.

"If you’re really my friend, then you’ll take this and hold onto it.

When we meet again in Brightshore City, make sure to return it," Elena said casually, a smile on her face.

Her beautiful blue eyes sparkled in the sunlight, and her golden hair made her seem like an otherworldly fairy living in the mortal world.

When Elena noticed the dull and somewhat idiotic expression on Feng’s face, she suddenly burst into laughter, making her look even more enchanting.

However, the words she spoke next made Feng snap out of his reverie, and he quickly sucked in a breath.

"If you did something like that back in Brightshore, my father would probably gouge out your eyes." She smiled, but there was something else behind her words, and she thought to herself,

I guess being beautiful does have its perks.

Feng quickly forced himself to calm down, his expression turning fearful as he glanced left and right, as if expecting someone to be spying on him.

"Hey! How is it my fault that you look so pretty?" Feng muttered under his breath, then turned around and began walking away.

But after taking a few steps, he suddenly stopped, turned back around, and said seriously, "You should be careful."

He stared into her eyes for a moment longer before finally turning around and walking off.

Elena heard his words and looked at his retreating figure.

She muttered to herself, "Take care of yourself as well."

As Feng walked off into the distance, he failed to notice someone watching him from the darkness of the forest.

This person was clearly restraining themselves, their eyes burning with killing intent.

When the figure saw that Feng had walked a fair distance away, it swiftly moved to kneel beside Elena, bowing down before speaking.

"Mistress, that person seems suspicious. It’s clear he has a connection with the Blackwood Ruler.

The spiritual energy mark he left on you imitates its aura almost perfectly."

The person who spoke wore a dark golden robe that covered their entire body, leaving only their eyes visible.

A murderous aura surrounded them, yet they remained subservient, their head lowered in respect.

"If you dare touch even a hair on his head, I’ll have your head cut off," Elena replied, her voice devoid of the joy and innocence she had shown to Feng.

Instead, it was filled with cold, murderous intent.

This was Elena Brightheaven, the only daughter of the Governor of Brightshore City.
