Chapter 49: Conversation

Feng walked ahead in silence, trying his best to reach the river as quickly as possible.

Why? Because the more time he spent with this girl, the more dangerous things became.

She was most likely from a powerful faction within the Eastern Territories.

For someone like him—a mere boy from a backwater village—to get involved with a girl of her status was nothing short of courting death before even taking a single step forward.

An awkward silence stretched between them. Feng led the way, while Elena followed behind. Neither seemed to know what to say.

Though Feng had appeared extroverted in their earlier conversation, years of suffering as a Broken Soul in Raincloud Village had forced him into long periods of solitude.

Being ostracized had dulled his social skills considerably.

"So, are you actually here for personal training? I assumed that was the case, but you never confirmed it," Feng asked.

If she was, perhaps he could help—after all, he had spent quite some time in the Blackwood Forest.

"I came from Silverpine City," Elena said quietly. "I took a quest to hunt Black Blood Komodo Dragons." Her troubled expression made it clear she was struggling with the task.

Feng didn’t know how long she had been in the forest, but if she had ventured this deep, it had clearly been a while.

"I actually came across a bunch of them while traveling through here. But Black Blood Komodo Dragons are usually found on the far end of the Blackwood Forest,"

Feng said, recalling the first time he fought those beasts and the surge of strength he felt when using his integration.

Elena remained silent for a moment before responding.

"I guess I’ll have to go deeper into the forest," she said, glancing toward the center, clearly she still had plans of going back inside.

"What part of them do you need?" Feng asked.

He remembered storing several Black Blood Komodo Dragon scales and vials of blood in his bag of holding to sell later.

At that moment, he also realized something—he should have taken some of those spiritual energy stalactites from the Blackwood Ruler’s cave abode.

"Damn, why didn’t I think of that earlier?" Feng muttered to himself in frustration.

Elena, noticing his reaction, gave him a strange look but still answered calmly.

"I need a liter of their blood. The stronger the beast, the better," she said, turning to Feng with an eager expression but she still looked calm.

It seemed she had realized he most likely had some on hand since he brought it up.

"Don’t worry, I’ll give you a fair price—1,000 spirit stones," she said seriously. It was clear she was determined to buy his entire supply of Black Blood.

Although Feng knew it would fetch a good price on the market, he was certain it wasn’t worth that much. His mind began to race, and just as he was about to speak...

"Alright, I’ll give you 2,000 spirit stones," Elena said through gritted teeth, as if struggling against something. Yet, even in frustration, she still looked oddly adorable.

It was clear this Black Blood was extremely important to her. Still, Feng couldn’t help but give her an odd look—this girl was obviously a walking money bag.

Feng sighed and shook his head before retrieving about a liter of Black Blood from his bag of holding.

The dark liquid was stored inside a gourd he had found growing in the Blackwood Forest, the same type he used to carry fresh water.

"Here you go. Consider this thanks for saving me back there," Feng said, tossing the gourd behind him.

Though he felt a slight reluctance, he reminded himself that she had tried to save his life—even if he probably could have handled it on his own.

That alone meant he owed her a favor.

Elena caught the gourd, her eyes widening in shock.

Her mouth opened slightly—clearly, she hadn’t expected him to hand it over so easily.

Her father had always warned her about men like Feng—schemers who sought every opportunity to take advantage of others.

He had drilled into her that she should always be careful not to be scammed.

Yet, when she once asked if he himself was one of those schemers, her father had immediately puffed out his chest, shaking his head with righteous pride.

"Of course not! Daddy is a good-natured and righteous man!"

Elena always wore an odd expression whenever her father said that, yet she never refuted him.

After all, most of her interactions with other people had been transactional, a way to gather information for missions assigned to her by her father.

Outside of this, she had to spend her free time within their family estate focused solely on cultivation and growing stronger.

This was actually her first time interacting with someone of the opposite sex who was her own age at such a private setting, although she didn’t really understand why she felt so comfortable with him in the first place especially because of the previous incident.

Before she could say anything in response, she was forced to shut her mouth once again upon hearing Feng’s next words.

"You don’t need to insist on paying me. These things aren’t actually that valuable.

There are plenty of Black Blood Komodo Dragons deeper in the forest—it’ll only take you a few hours to reach them.

And with your strength, I doubt any of them would pose a real threat to you," Feng said casually.

But thinking that might not be enough to convince her, he quickly added, "Consider this returning the favor for helping me back there, so please accept it, even if you did try to kill me."

His expression suddenly turned a bit sour at the end, clearly Feng still wasn’t over the previous death threat.

Hearing his words, Elena fell into thought before slowly nodding, her expression softening with gratitude.

Clearly, his explanation combined with the guilt she felt about what she did was enough to convince her as she softly responded with

"Thank you."

With that, Feng and Elena’s journey through the forest quickly returned to silence.

The only sounds were the rustling of leaves beneath their feet and the occasional distant cry of a beast hidden within the dense foliage.

The awkward atmosphere between them lingered, neither of them knowing what to say, yet it wasn’t an entirely uncomfortable silence.

Thankfully, it wouldn’t last long.

Before long, the faint but distinct sound of rushing water reached their ears, growing louder with each step.

The crisp, refreshing scent of the river mixed with the damp, earthy aroma of the Blackwood Forest, signaling that they were close to their destination.
