Chapter 40: A Problem

Once the two Clear River Carps were finished cooking, both Feng and the Blackwood Ruler eagerly dug in.

The rich, smoky aroma of the fish filled the air and the crispy, golden-brown skin crackled as Feng took his first bite, revealing the tender, succulent flesh beneath.

The Blackwood Ruler was also clearly satisfied, its tail wagging in left and right as it devoured its share.

Occasionally, it let out a low, contented rumble, savoring every mouthful.

It was a rare sight—such a powerful spiritual beast simply enjoying a good meal.

Feng was equally happy.

The taste of cooked spiritual beast meat was unlike anything he had ever experienced in Raincloud Village.

Compared to the simple meals he had grown up with, this was a feast fit for a king.

To have eaten two whole spiritual beasts in a row here, in the Blackwood Ruler’s territory, filled him with an immense sense of satisfaction.

Yet, despite the good food, something else weighed heavily on his mind—a thought that replayed in an endless loop, refusing to let go.

He was so caught up in his own contemplation that he barely noticed the surging spiritual energy coursing through him.

Every bite he took sent faint ripples of power through his body, subtly refining his cultivation base, pushing him ever closer to the sixth level of Qi Condensation.

"Hmm... can’t I just imitate a wolf’s howl and be done with it?" Feng mused, tearing into another piece of fish.

The thought had been lingering in the back of his mind for some time now, gnawing at him like an fishbone stuck in his throat.

Meanwhile, the Blackwood Ruler licked its chops, savoring the lingering taste of the Clear River Carp.

Then, with a final approving nod toward Feng, it turned and vanished into the depths of the forest.

Despite its clear satisfaction with the meal, it was not enough.

A beast of its size required far more sustenance, and so it went back to the Blackwood Forest, hunting for more spiritual beasts to satisfy its hunger.

As Feng cleaned up the fireplace, his mind raced with possibilities, trying to figure out a way to cultivate the Ruler’s Howl.

Once he was done, he wasted no time getting to work.

He found a large enough clearing where even if he knocked down a few trees, it wouldn’t disrupt the overall ambience of the area.

Closing his eyes, he instinctively gathered spiritual energy into his throat and attempted to imitate a wolf’s howl.

AWOO!!

The moment he released the howl, trees within a 5-meter radius bent under the sheer pressure.

It was clear that he had a natural affinity for this technique due to his Heaven’s Pact.

However, what he had just done was merely a strengthened howl—it lacked the paralyzing fear he had felt when the Blackwood Ruler demonstrated it.

"Hmm, what if I infuse it with the aura from my Alpha Wolf’s Domain?" The idea struck him suddenly, and he was eager to test it out.

Closing his eyes, then opening them, a scintillating gray light flashed within his gaze.

A powerful aura of dominance and slaughter spread from Feng, making him appear less like a human and more like a spiritual beast in human form.

Channeling darksilver spiritual energy through his qi pathways toward his throat, he prepared to unleash another howl.

AW—

Feng’s eyes suddenly bulged as, before he could finish his howl, his body convulsed violently.

A searing pain erupted in his throat, as if it were on fire, and he coughed up a mouthful of blood.

"Damn! What the hell? Did I just suffer a backlash?" Feng muttered, his face pale as he stared at the blood splattered on the forest floor.

[The host cannot forcibly attempt the Ruler’s Howl without the proper enlightenment. Doing so places significant strain on the host’s body, resulting in a backlash.]

That familiar mechanical voice echoed in his mind.

Hearing it, Feng’s expression twisted with indignation.

"You really couldn’t have told me that before I tried it?" he mentally shouted, feeling completely wronged.

[The host did not ask.]

Feng slapped his forehead and shook his head.

Although the system was undeniably helpful in his cultivation, there were times when it was utterly unreliable.

"Well, I guess I need to think this through more carefully.

The problem is probably still tied to the fact that I’m human and not a true Blackwood Alpha Wolf.

My throat muscles likely aren’t as strong, and I don’t have the same number of qi pathways that reinforce that area," he reasoned.

"Hey, System, can’t I use the Blackwood Ruler Physique to strengthen my throat muscles and avoid the backlash?" he asked aloud in his head.

[The issue is not the host’s physical strength. You have already achieved the first level of the Blackwood Ruler Physique.]

[The real problem lies in the incompatibility between the act of performing a wolf’s howl, the darksilver energy, and the aura of dominance from the Alpha Wolf’s Domain, which is supposed to supplement it.]

"Damn, so the issue is really just that I’m not a wolf?" Feng sighed, his expression sour as he felt like he’d hit a dead end.

This was the only one of the three techniques in the Blackwood Dominance Art that he still hadn’t mastered.

And while the Blackwood Ruler had been treating him well, he didn’t want to overstay his welcome.

Still, for some reason, he had a feeling the Blackwood Ruler wouldn’t mind.

Regardless, Feng’s main goal was to set off on his journey to Brightshore City and join its number one academy—Brightshore Academy!

Determined, he wracked his brain for a solution, replaying every experience that had led him to this point.

He sifted through his memories, searching for anything that might help him unlock the Ruler’s Howl.

He even analyzed his past battles, hoping to uncover a clue—anything—that could point him in the right direction.

Then, suddenly, inspiration struck.

A thought ignited in his mind, growing stronger with each passing second.

Feng recalled his fight with Mun and Lin—the moment when his Heaven’s Pact had unleashed a wolf’s howl, intimidating them before he had even made a move.

"Wait... can’t I use my Blackwood Alpha Wolf Heaven’s Pact as a medium and release the Ruler’s Howl through it instead of my own mouth?" Feng thought, his eyes flashing with excitement.
