Chapter 135: High Inquisitors

Chen Mei, noticing the dazed look on Lin Feng’s face and how he seemed utterly captivated by her, suddenly felt her cheeks flush a deep red.

A wave of heat surged through her, making her feel as if her entire face was burning.

Struggling to maintain her composure, she forced herself to speak in a calm and steady voice.

"Just take it, Lin Feng. You can consider it as owing me another favor," she said, doing her best to ignore the way he had been staring at her.

Hmph, so my looks still have an effect on this scoundrel.

A mischievous thought crossed her mind as she recalled the moment Lin Feng had accidentally touched her before. Her heartbeat quickened, an unfamiliar nervousness creeping into her chest.

Is this guy lucky or unlucky to be caught up with both me and Elena? A wry smile almost formed on her lips. I don’t think she’s the type to share...

Meanwhile, Lin Feng, snapping out of his trance at the sight of Chen Mei’s reaction, exhaled sharply, forcefully clearing his mind.

Pushing aside any stray thoughts, he shifted his focus back to the jade-green medicinal pill resting in her outstretched hand.

Let’s just take it. I don’t think she’ll stop trying to force me anyway, so I might as well.

Lin Feng sighed inwardly before nodding.

"All right, this means I owe you another favor—one for saving my life before, and now a second one for this medicinal pill!" His tone was serious, deliberately shifting the topic.

Chen Mei immediately caught on to his attempt to move past the awkward moment between them.

She took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down before flashing a playful smile.

"All right, that’s two favors. I’ll be cashing them in once you get even stronger!"

Lin Feng chuckled, meeting her smile with one of his own before turning his attention toward Wei Jun.

Unlike Lin Feng, whose wounds were already closing thanks to his Blackwood Ruler Physique, Wei Jun’s injuries remained severe.

His body lacked the same powerful recovery, making the contrast between them all the more obvious.

Before Lin Feng could say anything, Wei Jun suddenly spoke, his voice laced with barely contained frustration.

"So... are you two really together, Chen Mei?" Wei Jun spoke through gritted teeth, his eyes flashing with jealousy.

No matter how hard he tried to stay composed, seeing the person he liked giving special attention to another man right in front of him still stung.

Chen Mei’s gaze turned cold. "And if we are, what does it matter to you, Wei Jun? I already told you—I’m not interested. Or do you need me to beat you up again to make you remember?"

Her voice was laced with impatience, making it clear she had no desire to have this conversation again.

Wei Jun clenched his fists, anger bubbling within him.

"What makes him so special, Chen Mei? Haven’t you heard? The Wei Clan and the Church of Heaven are forming an alliance. Once I reach Foundation Establishment, the Church will take me in as a High Inquisitor. You understand what that means, don’t you?"

Chen Mei’s expression faltered for a brief moment, a flicker of apprehension flashing in her eyes.

Even she couldn’t deny that someone with the potential to become a High Inquisitor of the Church of Heaven was not to be taken lightly.

And yet, despite this, she remained unfazed. A layer of frost crept into her voice as she replied.

"So what if you become a High Inquisitor? In truth, that title will be in name only. We both know that reaching Foundation Establishment alone isn’t enough—you have to be stronger than that."

"However, to truly hold that position, you’d have to abandon your Wei Clan and devote yourself entirely to the Church. Tell me, Wei Jun—are you really willing to do that?"

Wei Jun froze at Chen Mei’s words, frustration flickering across his face.

It was clear this was something he had wrestled with for a long time.

Lin Feng, who had been silently listening to their exchange, suddenly spoke up.

"What does it mean to be a High Inquisitor of the Church of Heaven?"

Chen Mei shifted her gaze toward him, momentarily pausing before answering.

"Before I explain that, we need to understand what the Church of Heaven actually is. As you know, the Church of Heaven is the dominant religion in the Eastern Territories."

This means that, generally speaking, all cultivators here follow its doctrines, which are as follows:

The Heavenly Dao is above all. Any form of disrespect toward it, or any act of blasphemy, is punishable by the highest degree—execution.

The Church of Heaven, as the emissaries of the Heavenly Dao, acts as its representative. Any insult or blasphemy against its members is considered an affront to the Heavenly Dao itself and is, likewise, punishable by execution.

Those with Broken Souls are seen as rejected by the Heavenly Dao. As such, they are forbidden from learning cultivation and must live as ordinary mortals.

"The ones responsible for enforcing these laws are the Inquisitors of the Church of Heaven," Chen Mei continued, her tone laced with clear disdain.

"They are not just enforcers; they are judge, jury, and executioner.

The Church grants them authority over all matters related to divine law, meaning they can condemn or spare someone as they see fit.

No sect, clan, or city lord dares to openly defy an Inquisitor, as doing so would be considered an act of defiance against the Heavenly Dao itself."

She crossed her arms, her purple eyes narrowing.

"The higher-ranked ones, the High Inquisitors, are even more terrifying.

Unlike ordinary cultivators who pursue strength through sects or clans, they are wholly devoted to the Church, severing all ties to their past lives.

The Church indoctrinates them from the moment they are chosen, reshaping their beliefs until their only loyalty is to the Church.

Once someone attains the rank of High Inquisitor, there is no turning back."

Lin Feng furrowed his brows. "So, they’re basically fanatics with unchecked power?"

Chen Mei nodded her head.

"Exactly. If an Inquisitor accuses someone of blasphemy, even if it’s false, there’s no trial—just immediate punishment.

Most people live in fear of them, especially those who don’t conform to the Church’s doctrine."

Lin Feng clenched his fists. The more he learned about this so-called Church of Heaven, the more disgusted he felt.

The idea that they held so much power, that they could decide who lived and who died simply by labeling someone a heretic, made his blood boil.

This Church of Heaven is a complete load of bullshit!
