Chapter 150: Chapter 150 The Girl’s Tears Rolled Down
Shen Hua truly had not expected Shen Qu to be so shameless.
This Yulan Painting took her nearly two years of painstaking effort. After she finished it, Shen Wei had it mounted and hung in the study.
Thus, when Shen Hua left the Shen Family, she forgot to take it with her.
"This came from the Shen Family’s Embroidery Workshop, what does it have to do with you?"
Xue Shuyue laughed: "Such words, you can actually utter them."
She wanted to say more, but then she met Shen Hua’s indifferent gaze and the words choked in her throat.
Yicui stepped forward, took out a silver note and stuffed it into Xue Shuyue’s hand: "Lady Xue may not know, our lady embroidered this when she was ten, and it took her a full two years."
Shen Hua spoke abruptly: "I’m leaving now."
"Won’t you stay for a meal?"
"It was only sold for 500 taels, I’m not pleased."
She didn’t even use her wheelchair, striding out with a cold face. The delay had turned it to deep dusk. In the blink of an eye, the girl disappeared into the night’s darkness.
Yicui had no choice but to borrow a lantern and quickly followed.
"My lady, please watch your step carefully."
She gently and softly tried to persuade: "That sort of lowlife isn’t worth upsetting yourself over, my lady."
Shen Hua pressed her lips together tightly.
"He did it on purpose to spite you, he doesn’t understand embroidery to begin with, and Manager Cheng flattered him deceitfully. Mixing the good with the bad in their sales, it’s heartless."
"Luckily it was 500 taels, if they had truly sold a daughter’s worth, wouldn’t it mean those night rats made a daughter’s fortune? How could they be worthy of it?"
She knew well how to comfort Shen Hua, and sure enough, Shen Hua slowed her pace.
Shen Hua held the embroidery tightly, lowering her head to kick the stones on the ground: "But it’s hard for me."
The cold wind soughed, leaving the girl looking very helpless.
She spoke very softly, with an unwitting choke in her voice.
"I really miss Mama."
"Yicui, you see how everyone walks all over me."
Yicui’s eyes reddened, her heart ached tremendously. She quickly embraced Shen Hua.
"This servant is with you."
No one could stand by her forever.
With a pat, the girl’s tears rolled down.
Shen Hua simply shook her head, her shoulders trembling slightly. Wiping away her tears, she walked step by step towards the East Courtyard.
Upon reaching the brightly lit East Courtyard, she heard the long-waiting Cui Rong demanding: "Hey, how come you’re only returning now?"
Cui Rong darted forward, hands akimbo: "I just came especially to tell you, the teacher praised me again today. You didn’t see it, I really sympathize with you."
She wanted to say more, but then she saw Shen Hua’s red face and the undried tear stains.
Cui Rong choked up.
Her bravado slowly diminished.
"Little ghost, I’m not in the mood to quarrel with you today."
Shen Hua turned her face away, dropping a sentence before heading straight inside: "Send the Commandery Princess back, give her a share of the pastry."
Cui Rong stood there stunned, watching her enter the room. Then, feeling helpless, she rubbed her hands: "What happened to her?"
Yicui squatted down and placed the pastry into Cui Rong’s arms: "My lady is not feeling well, she cannot entertain the Commandery Princess properly."
Cui Rong, unusually, did not persist relentlessly.
She huffed to the servant beside her.
"Let’s go."
Yicui saw her off to the West Garden, then turned back.
Yet Cui Rong kept looking back every three steps, murmuring to herself: "She must have been bullied."
"She always bullies me, and although she deserves it, I have never bullied her back, so why should others be allowed to bully her?"
Cui Rong glared with her round eyes.
"On account of the pastries, I ought to stand up for her, don’t you think?"
Servant: "What the Commandery Princess says is naturally correct."
Cui Rong: "Go to Ju Courtyard."
Ju Courtyard.
Little dumpling ran in furiously.
Cui Yun put down her jade chopsticks and asked softly: "Have you eaten dinner yet?"
Cui Rong rubbed her stomach.
"Not yet."
"Why don’t you eat something here at your second uncle’s? We happen to have your favorite ribs."
Cui Yun lifted her onto a wooden stool and instructed Ji Xin to fetch a bowl and chopsticks.
Cui Rong: "And there’s the fish I love too!"
"I love having meals with second uncle the most."
Wait.
She quickly came to realize.
"Second uncle, she was crying so miserably, I saw it with my own eyes. I knew those cousins were up to no good."
"It looks like she might even have been beaten."
To make it sound more serious, Cui Rong said with wide-open eyes, "Her face was all bruised."
How could Cui Yun believe what Cui Rong said.
Shen Hua, that kind of girl, if she had even a tiny cut on her body, it would probably cause a huge fuss.
Those cousins from the household really aren’t her match.
Though arrogant, she is also clever. Perhaps even the famous Lady Yan from Shengjing cannot compare with her.
Cui Yun could have sent Ji Xin to check or perhaps not bother at all. But not long ago, the girl’s strange voice was heard, putting on affectations.
—"Taking someone’s generosity makes for a short hand. How could I have the cheek? But the Marquis has mentioned it, how could I spoil your esteem. Not just anyone can buy me pastries, I want three bags."
East Courtyard.
The moonlight was dense and the dusk deeply shrouding, casting a particularly chilling embrace.
It’s not clear who shattered this dead silence.
"My lady has not yet had her evening meal."
Yicui stood outside the courtyard, looking back at the tightly closed door with concern multiple times. In face of the solemn expressions from Nanny Cheng and Ningzhu, she merely shook her head.
"My lady usually needs to take medicine, and thankfully the eldest madam was thoughtful enough to leave us a small kitchen. We can cook whenever my lady wants to eat, it’s not too late."
"Shan’t we persuade her? My lady listens to you the most."
Yicui, with a downcast gaze of disappointment: "My lady is just reminded of something sad, this kind of thing can’t be coaxed."
Just then, a commotion came from outside.
One could see Ji Qing respectfully leading the way, as the figure of a man merged quietly with the moonlight, serene and leisurely.
The shadows of the trees swayed with the wind, adding to the desolation. His stature was tall and slim, cold and as cool as water.
Before they could even greet him, Cui Yun raised his eyes to the firmly closed door.
"Has she retired for the night?"
"Not yet."
The lady loves cleanliness and definitely bathes before sleeping. They had not yet prepared water for her till now.
The nobleman with an air of refinement nodded his head.
He climbed the stairs and with his distinct fingers, laid his hand on the door.
Yicui was about to voice an objection, but eventually, it was stuck in her throat.
With a ’creak,’ the door was opened and Cui Yun stepped inside at a leisurely pace.
Ningzhu and Nanny Cheng exchanged glances, murmuring in low voices, "After all, there’s a distinction between men and women, and it’s late at night."
Yicui stood firmly to one side.
"We’re all watching outside, what could go wrong? What’s there to panic about?"
She waited quietly for a long while. Since no intense commotion came from inside the room, her feelings were complex and plentiful.
"Naturally, we can trust the Marquis."
"And if my lady dislikes it, she would disregard status and chase him out in a fit of pique."
Yicui: "Look, my lady didn’t chase him out."
Inside the room, Cui Yun’s gaze soon settled on a spot.
Behind a folding screen, Shen Hua was struggling to reach for something from under the bed.
"What are you looking for?" he approached.
Shen Hua heard the noise, turned her head with her red and sweaty face.
Her hair was somewhat disheveled, and her eyes were a bit startled.
Shen Hua ignored him, continuing to reach out her hand.
Finally, with much difficulty, she took out the gold coins that had rolled underneath.
Having done this, she slowly said.
"I wasn’t I didn’t you saw it wrong."
Shen Hua: "You’re the one who’s blind."
